Idk why people keep saying espresso is only catchy. The lyrics make sense and rhyme at the same time, it has a mood to it and it has a creative beat (which is starting to get harder with more songs being released) And as someone who loves poetry and writing things with feeling and mood I really like the flirtatious vibe it gives off even if I don't listen to sabrina
honestly I think the reason Espresso blew up the way it did is because it's about "nothing", if im listening to pop I dont NEED though provoking lyrics and low energy, what I want is a good vibe that I can dance to and that is what Espresso delivered.

Espresso is the kind of song you wanna hear while you’re in the car with your friends on your way to the beach. It’s the kind of song you want on your playlist if you’re having people over for a bbq. It’s a fun song and it makes you wanna bop your head along to it. It truly is the feeling of summer, all in 2.5min. A lot of us are trying to FEEL SOMETHING other than despair, dread, and existentialism 😭
@@sateliteschinosit’s about balance…that’s the problem is everyone is so busy trying to chase a trend rather than carving out their own lane..like the sad girl meaningful ballads make sense for Billie, that’s a lane she carved for herself and I like getting those songs from her. Sabrina makes very upbeat, tongue n cheek/witty, songs that aren’t particularly deep, but make you laugh and bop your head along. I think we need both, and they both can coexist and gain success/popularity, but as soon as one person does something new and different, everyone just jumps on the train so they can capitalize on it while it’s popular rather than creating something unique to them.

Espresso is a great example of how a song doesn't need deep songwriting to be good. Its fun and has great production/melodies. It embodies a nostalgic summer vibe just like the visuals convey.

I really wish we could embrace music in other languages more. There's some great spanish, french, korean, chinese and more songs in all genres but yall are sleeping on it.
Quite sure it has to do w how almost everyone understands English to some degree, therefore non English music rarely makes international success. But then you do have non English bops that go viral for its danceable tunes and the lyrics itself fade into the backburner, ppl don't care as long as they have a tiktok trend to make posts with.
AGREED😩 I've always liked music that wasn't necessarily in a language I understood (I imagine it's partly because I'm ESL in a very English influenced country, so I grew up not understanding most of what I heard on the radio anyways😄), but in the most recent years, I've really started to explore music from all over the world and it's so refreshing! I love cultural influences in music, especially something I don't know of very well already.

Taylor Swift is quite talented, but the way her stans make her out to be the artist of generations is super overdramatic. Her writing is better than the average popstar, but she doesn't excel at anything other than that. Her voice is average, her dancing is weak and her stage presence is vastly overrated. The way her stans describe her you'd think she's Prince or something. You're allowed to like an artist and also admit that they are not a master at everything.

i think kpop is more oversaturated rather than uninspired tbh, bc there are just so many groups that do so many works its hard to be original and stand out. A lot of the mainstream kgroups are popular because they are making good music, so then the industry follows that formula to find success. It's certainly difficult to find unique and creative music in the sea of kpop, but there are gems out there who create authentic music. There are some groups that mimic trending sounds, and it becomes a bit souless, but groups like 'Kiss Of Life' truly revitalize the essence of unique and individual groups that have their own soundscapes and creative direction.
i hella agree!! oversaturated is a perfect word for it. i noticed around there are not as many unique sound l’s nowadays then there way back in 2017-2018, all of the visuals are what’s trendy, no one takes risks musically! and all the promotion is only ever done on instagram and tik tok

I think the biggest groups in America like BTS are big more so because they are HEAVILY fethishized. Teen girls and young adult women are the strongest contributing factor bar none in terms of artists blowing up. Matter of fact I think they control basically all media in terms of popularity.
And good groups are not given attention if they dont come from a company with connections or the big 4

THE KPOP COMMENT 😭 as a kpop lover i do agree with the influence from other artists but the way they make it fun and it’s not just the sad push that pop is going towards.
Sabrina has a lot of songs about social anxiety, expectations, heartbreak, being a woman, even revenge, her parents divorce, etc… but Espresso was the one that smashed and that's ok, you know? people want to have fun but it doesn't mean the fun and catchiness it's the only aspect of her music.

Kpop has never been “authentic” but the real problem with it is that a lot of these groups don’t make certain influences into their own. It just feels like copy and paste rather than genuine influence.
A huge part is that they have American artists write their songs with prompts like "a Charlie xcx hyperpop sound" like I am a kpop Stan but boy it has been sounding repetitive, especially boygroups
The originality exists in independent artists not these manufactured groups who outsource their production

Nothing wrong with hiring American songwriters, but these companies need to start telling their songwriters to work with their group to help them curate an original sound and have them stick with the groups for as long as they can and ACTUALLY PAY THEM!! Some of these newer kpop songwriters sound cheap.

Music channels were some of the best parts of my childhood, whether is MTV, VH1 or one of those generic music channels by genre. I fell in love with Brandy and Amy Winehouse as a kid because of VH1 specials and watching their music videos. I have so many memories of just dancing to these music channels and being addicted to music.
I absolutely loved them! Remember watching them before going to school in the morning haha

Michael Jackson was an incredible singer. His range was the same as Freddie Mercury and Beyonce, he sang everyone under the table on We are the world. His vocal training, practice, skill/technique since he was a child. I think it’s the way he stylistically chose to use his voice in the latter half of his career. Lots of people don’t love the style of singing so I think people forget his expertise.
MJ was a vocalist🤌🏼 he had rock, gospel, soul, and pop running through his veins with a vibrato that was exclusive to the jacksons
The opinion about songwriting definitely made me think too. I know with someone like Aaliyah, she has said in interviews before that she didn't really have a desire to write her own music because she liked the songs that she was given. I think especially nowadays artists get clowned on social media for having x amount of writers on their songs or not writing their own material but at the end of the day if the song is good and the artist can elevate it or bring it to life somehow, there shouldn't be this expectation to completely write all your material and shame when you don't.

I think you hit the nail on the head w Bruno Mars because when I think about him, when WASN'T he making hits? He can sing he can dance. He doesn't get old he doesn't get tired. But you know him more for his music than for him, and unfortunately, I feel the greatest legends had this extra star quality, that has nothing to do with the music so much as it has to do with the power of their celebrity. I'd like to see him on a top 100 list with best singers and artists, but there's a level of cultural influence other have (like Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, even Britney Spears) that it feels like he's missing.
Yeah bruno is that guy fr. He has always made hits! Even when he came out. But there’s a disconnect there & then the only time we get some insight into his life lately is because of rumored gambling debt😭 i just don’t know how he will be remembered in the grand scheme of things
He needs MORE albums to cement his legacy imo his last SOLO album was 2016 which is as long as we’ve been waiting for Rihanna’s. I think he’s at his best when he’s combining older music style and trends with something NEW which was best shown on unorthodox jukebox. I do think he has potential tho and he’s one of FEW male artists who can actually perform so that’s always going for him.

all those artists you mentioned toward the end have a higher level of cultural influence because they brought something innovative/revolutionary to pop music. choreography, tone, range, stage presence, music genres. bruno makes good hits for sure, but he's never put out anything that hasn't already been done.

I think to me, the lyrics were good as in theme & vulnerability, but in terms of cadence, clarity of wording, smoothness, how/where the rhymes fell etc. like the more technical aspects it definitely sounded like someone new to songwriting. stuff sounded a little clunky at times ("now he's in my bed... laying on MY chest" & "but I'd like to just, pre-e-tend" were two lyrics I remember being like oh I guess thats a choice) but in terms of sound, composition, production etc it was 100% my fav post dangerous woman album of hers
With the R&B category, The genre is turning into Rap/HipHop when it comes to the topics and subject matters of love and sex. No one is singing about love no more they’re simply singing about situationships, toxicity, and plan and simply f****** because that’s not only us as the consumers are experiencing on a day to day basis in our “love lives” but also the celebrities as well a perfect example is Chris Brown’s music from 2015 to now.

1. I actually think that Beyoncé not heavily promoting Cowboy Carter is a great move. She basically did the same thing with RENAISSANCE and look how that ended. In this new trilogy that she’s been doing, I’ve noticed that she genuinely wants the music to marinate and take us back to the times where all we could do is listen to the music. The whole world knows she’s got a career-defining collection of visuals and projects, she’s Beyoncé (after 25 years of music, we trust that whatever she do is worth the wait). Something seen throughout her career is that timing and strategy are criterial in a long lasting impact.
2. I kinda of understand what you are saying about Rihanna but I believe her voice is very impressive. She probably didn’t grow up professionally singing but she’s found a signature and very recognizable voice for herself. To sound like Rihanna is not easy to do. I find that about her very impressive.
3. MJs voice is one of the hardest and most impressive voices ever. People don’t understand how difficult it is for a MAN to sing like that. He can go from baritone to basically an alto (that’s years of learning). He’s voice is something you don’t only hear but you LITERALLY feel. He’s like a level 1000 theatre kid (not the annoying kind).

Atleast you were honest about Rihanna and I agree with the take. I’ve watched every single Rihanna performance from 2005-till recent and it took me two weeks to finish. It’s so irritating hearing so much in your face vulgarity in a lot of r&b today, don’t get me wrong I’m sure there was plenty of r&b in the 90s and 80s that might’ve had a lot of language but there seems to be more now and there was back then, going off from all the rnb songs I’ve heard at least.
To be honest, I get that pop means 'popular' and popular music is always gonna change; HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that playing an instrument or writing your own music necessarily makes you a better song writer. Believe me, I love intricate lyrics, but to be honest those are an after thought and when I'm listening I'm usually more concerned about the beat. If the song has a boring beat, chances are I won't listen to it; however, if the lyrics are corny I can still like it if it has a catchy beat.

I went through a huge Weeknd phase before I realized that his music is literally just a storyline of a toxic Michael Jackson. He can make a hit though. I don't think he gets enough credit for how many bops he has put out. The Weeknd plays up this dark, mysterious pop star and clearly it works numbers wise.

About the K-pop thing, it doesn't have this one set sound. K-pop isn't a genre because there are a bunch of different genres in K-pop. Kpop isn't a genre. It's just music that comes from Korea. It should be taken seriously because they work just as hard on their music as Western artists. Especially with the toxic dieting culture, the skin bleaching, them being worked half to death, their come backs every like 2 months. They deserve to be recognized.

So many groups and a plethora of independent artists have their own sound and because of mainstream/trend following groups, they don’t shine as much.

@@nai110 that depends on the group tho, there are quite a lot of groups that take a lot, if not all, of the creative process in their own hands. Groups like Stray Kids, Ateez, G-idle, bts, onlyoneof, young posse, seventeen, and many more make their own lyrics, produce their own songs and choreography. It just depends on what group u chose to listen to.

For real some of the best vocalists of all time had writers or sang covers. And many great songwriters work with others to elevate their writing and keep things fresh.
People acting like having fun is illegal or something. I remember being in an art department where depressive art is appreciated while happy and cheerful art is ridiculed. My work revolves around happiness and optimism, and it gets shamed for not following “the principles of the art department”. Talk about monolithic. Bottom line, people are over-analyzing the most simplest of things. Not everything has a deep meaning.
Life is an assortment of energies and “depressive energy” isn’t the only one, and in this case it’s not the only genre to cater too. Fun poppy songs are due for a resurgence! I haven’t heard anything like Espresso since Say So, Levitating, Boy With Luv, FANCY, and California Gurls! You don’t have to be profound and evocative all the time… just release your inhibitions and have fun.
Honestly I agree with the anti-streaming comment. Streaming allows for the most generic songs to be pushed forward and sometimes they're not even good, they're just trending or made by a popular artist. I like Radio (My parents listen to it so I listen with them) and my country still has Music channels so I don't stream all that much. Then you also have fans that will stream songs that are not good and make them number 1 because their favourite artist just dropped an album. Nah streaming honestly messed up listening to music for me. It is nice having an album on the go however. I just wish it was as authentic as radio or music channels. We can't have everything though so I'll just enjoy what I can.

I think most people don’t receive KPop well is because they’re so inauthentic. these big companies commercialize them so much that they have almost zero personality of their own and everything seems calculated and planned. all their “cute and quirky” moments are all meticulously planned for ppl to like them, and it’s so blatant it hurts.

i love eternal sunshine because it feels like her album with the most coherent production and track list sequencing. it has such an identifiable soundscape that runs throughout the whole album, her most mature lyrics and songwriting, and references past musical eras particularly the 90’s without feeling derivative. i genuinely think it’s going to be one of the albums of hers that will age the best.

For the Kpop one, it’s giving I’ve never heard anything outside of tik tok. Kpop is a very wide and versatile genre that has a little bit of everything from rock (from groups like dreamcatcher) and ballads (from artists like iu), so the fact people tend to write it off so quickly and make sweeping statements about it has always felt incredibly icky to me because most people wouldn’t say that kind of thing about western music

Agreed but like kpop groups are so curated by their companies that being 100 percent your own authentic self is next to impossible. They want the groups to sell a fantasy not authenticity. That's why there's like "personalities" and roles that they take on for their audience. Like characters. I think if the companies loosen the reins and let artist be artist it would be great but like... let's maybe also do some cultural sensitivity classes because...why do so many songs have slurs?

At first I didn’t get the hype about espresso, but then after a few listens and actually thinking about it, I realized that pop music doesn’t need to be make sense haha like dynamite by BTS blew up a few years ago and the lyrics don’t make sense (even they said this) but it doesn’t matter because it’s a good catchy pop song. It’s kind of the same with espresso. And I like it now because I like the creative word play in the song like “switch it up like Nintendo” “my honeybee come and get this pollen” say you can’t sleep that’s me espresso” like those lyrics are so random but they’re fun to sing! So yea I hope Sabrina keeps making fun pop music🩷

The kpop one is so real. I am pretty involved in the kpop scene and it really is mostly a profit game. Most of them don’t focus on music quality but rather what’s trending and will make money. And it’s so funny bc many never give credit to the original styles or artists and they never tour in Africa even tho they keep making their type of music

Like before kpop blew up internationally, some people might say cutesy/quirky songs were unique to kpop, but as it got more and more popular in the west, groups started doing the cute music less and did more western pop sounds to appeal to that audience. But even then, the first few iconic idols were doing like early 2000s RnB and electro pop sounds in the early 2010s, just like the rest of western pop. A few current groups do a lot of experimental "noise music" that i don't really see in any other genres, but idk if that would count as being unique to kpop.
I think a big reason for this lack of uniqueness is that kpop is pretty new. There were obv korean singers in the 1900s, but the kpop system and curated singing and dancing groups only started in like the 90s, and by then, westen pop was pretty solidified already so kpop artists just jumped on what was popular. One of the biggest kpop companies, SM Entertainment named their collective of idols SM Town literally after Motown and was inspired by Motown's training of singers and dancers.
Lastly, I think what makes kpop unqiue and why they don't put maybe as much effort into the music (some do, but not all) is because K-pop is more so a culture rather than a genre. It's a combination of music, dancing, a distinct training system ( which ik i said was inspired by motown, but is now wayyy beyond that), creating parasocial relationships w fans, being tv personalities/influencers/models and being role models as a perfect person. Hence why the word kpop "idol" is used more than kpop singer or artist. In western music, we don't call ariana or justin bieber an idol because they really only focus on music as their craft, but kpop is very much a whole package type of thing.
These days too, a lotttt of kpop songs are produced by western producers or sample western pop songs. So I think i think as time goes on, kpop will continue to be more westernized.

The kpop is so true because New Jeans just released a song called Supernatural which has aspects of 90s new edition. Nothing new just replicating something that has been done before. They dont even try to give it a new spin just copy and paste .
