We are lucky to have you as an educator in the pipe smoking world. I’m pretty new to pipe smoking and appreciate your complete approach to the new pipe smokers. Thank you, Sir!
EMP has that early morning campfire tin note to me, with oriental incense nuances throughout the smoke…no tea or citrus notes for me usually but there is an underlying sweetness, and that woodsy campfire experience quickly takes a backseat to the orientals. It really wakes up my senses in the morning! It’s a great blend🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥
As a young boy, I was fascinated by the pipes, their forms and the smell, which was aromatic in the air. My uncle was a passionate pipe smoker and he was a real BBQ master and to clean the pipes together with him was the greatest thing for me. He had a strong effect on me and I looked up to him. Somehow something mystical. I always thought that someday I would also indulge in pipe smoking. I both my first pipe on my trip through america and funny enough, it was a cheap Omega Dr. Grabow. I really had to laugh when I heard your story about your grandfather. But I had somehow never found time to deal with it more intensively. Unfortunately, my uncle died this year and it became clear to me how transient everything is. The thought triggered something in me. Peace and contemplation or reflection. Thanks to your videos I was able to combine these concepts with smoking a pipe and it was like an enlightenment for me. Now I have for maybe 1 month, started smoking pipe regulary and I do not want to miss it. About the rating: I ordered the tobacco and first I was surprised, because I would have hardly expected the smell he unfolded. I especially like fruity blends. For me it has something homey, especially in cold wet weather it feels like I am with my friends, family or the scouts at the warming campfire. I love cooking and preparing meat on the grill. While you are standing there by the hot fire, your clothes get soaked with the intense smell of smoke. The next morning when you smell your clothes, that's exactly how this tobacco tastes and smells. Which is why I can follow your description 100%. From me it gives 🔥🔥🔥🔥 A fantastic tobacco for sentimental and memorable moments. Thank you for your valuable content, I can not get enough of it. Keep going. Thank you #muttnchoppiper Greetings from Switzerland
I’m fairly new to pipe smoking but this blend is quickly becoming my favourite. I live in Stratford upon Avon England and walking with a bowl of emp through the very historic streets is very humbling. I often sit on the bench opposite the birthplace of William Shakespeare enjoying my pipe.
I have to agree. I've not lit up a pipe for a couple of years or more, and when I used to smoke pipes more often, my technique was always flawed. I never quite burned out a pipe but I must have been close. I'd blast through the bowl like a steam train flying down a mountain. One day I may get back into this and light up again; if and when that day comes, having a recap or reminder of the basic process would definitely help. EMP is one of the unopened tins I have in a dark cupboard, slowly cellaring away, so it may have some nice age on it by the time I open it up. It was not one of my favourites as it seemed a bit bland - I prefer stronger English blends - but I do remember this one being quite Oriental forward, which I appreciate. If I were to light up a well aged tin of EMP now and to pay more attention to my cadence, I could quite possibly see myself enjoying this one rather more than I used to.
I’m not a pipe smoker [in fact, I’ve never smoked anything, in any of its various forms 🤷🏻♂️] that said, I find your videos a relaxing, soothing and introspective experience. Thank you for that! I could listen to this man for hours; whether he’s pontificating on a topic of which I have absolutely ZERO knowledge or experience, or a cover-to-cover narration of the 1982 Sears Christmas Catalog is, to me, immaterial. I am here for it! Hope you’re doing well, and looking forward to your content in 2023.
This Early Morning blend reminds me of pipe tobacco I bought from a pipe shop in San Bernardino Ca in the early70’s. Really like this it reminds me of my collage days when I first started smoking a pipe. 🤠🤠🤠🤠
😊😊😊 this is the second, we’ll call it “serious” blend I’ve tried. It reminds me of tea for some reason. I’m not experienced enough to articulate everything I noticed, but it was “tea” forward for me, with a little smokyness followed up by a peanut buttery taste and finished with a spicyness on my tongue 🤷♂️ doubt that helped anyone, but this is just the beginning of my pipe journey.
Just opened a tin, haven’t lit it up yet, but you’ve described the tin note perfectly. I wouldn’t have been able to articulate the peanut butter, but it’s definitely there.
👍👍👍👍👍for a classic bled introduced back in 1912 and remained as a top selection for thousands of smokers. Thank you Chris for all your enormous contribution to the pipe smokers all these years!
😶🌫️😶🌫️😶🌫️😶🌫️. The tin note is light with a little smoke and spice aroma. The moisture level in my tin was perfect. It takes a light very easy and stays lit as long as you pay attention. The flavor is very mild with campfire and the oriental adds a wonderful little spice. When exhaling through my nose I get a citrus, almost orange zest flavor. The room note is light and my wife doesn’t complain about how I smell after smoking it. Great tobacco to try if you haven’t already.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tin Note: Hickory smoke / BBQ sauce Room Note: Tolerable / Pleasant This tobacco was ready to smoke directly from the tin. It Charred-Lit-Embered-Burned-Tamped perfectly and was enjoyable for the duration of the bowl. A Mild to Medium strength that gave notes of campfire, caramel, spicy/floral. Like so many others here I am returning to pipe smoking after a few failed attempts over the years. MCP has put together a great channel here that has helped me to learn to smoke a pipe properly thereby releasing and enjoying the true flavors of tobaccos. This is my first real English blend. I enjoy it very much but hesitate to rate it higher due to my novice palette. Thank you to MCP for putting Blend Club 2023 together. It has introduced me to a variety of tobacco styles and flavors that would have taken me quite some time to discover on my own. The blends are different enough that I can really start to decide what I like and what I don't.
Tried it again today after about a week and it was tasty, easy to smoke , good tasting & reminded me of pipe tobacco I got in SO Calif in 1970 at Poor Richards Pipe shop. 🤠🤠🤠🤠
⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️ Nice smooth mild tobacco. Great all day smoke. May I add goes great with a cup of coffee in the morning. Big thank you Muttonchop keep up the great work!
I received a tin of Peterson's Early Morning Pipe today. I held off for almost 6 hours before breaking the tin open. I smoked a bowl through a well seasoned Missouri Meerschaum bent Country Gentleman. I found it mild yet rich in tobacco flavor. Don't know the nicotine content but I was lit up a bit. I get why they call it early morning. A big mug of strong black coffee with a squirt of honey and this pipe at 4am on the porch. Out the door with another pipe and a fly rod at 5am. 🤙🤙🤙
Loved how you went over the history of the tobacco! I like knowing the background of things, and it unironically makes the smoke more enjoyable for me 😁
I first started watching you in 2017 I believe just as the new year started, I went down to the local smoke store in my small Canadian town, and bought my first pipe, and a bag of captain blacks white blend. I was instantly hooked on the peacefulness created by the ritualistic packing of my pipe sitting in my chair. Since then I’ve come along. purchasing a couple beautiful peterson pipes, better quality pipe tobacco, and my understanding of flavour profiles. My ritual remains the same, the calming of the mind, the clarity of thinking and the experience I get from my pipes is a luxury for me. These days I rarely get in time for the ritual in my hectic life but lately as the spring thaw comes I find myself coming back to this beautiful state of mind.
🐓🐓🐓🐓 I love the sweet/sour flavor of the orientals and the subdued presence of the latakia. the virginias add a different sort of sweetness that makes this a very pleasant light english smoke. my advise is to go and get you some!!
I have this same tin and I’m smoking my first pipe ever while I watch this along with you. Didn’t plan it this way the guy at the store just said this would be good for a newbie
👍👍👍👍 As a relatively new pipe smoker, Early Morning Pipe has become one of my favorites. It’s definitely in my top 5. Thank you for another great video. 🙏🏼
Hey Chop. I started watching your content 6 years ago when I was 16. I had a fascination with pipe smoking, but being underage I couldn’t make that decision. I am now in my 20s and I have rediscovered your content. I may be a pipe smoker yet.
👍👍👍👍 thank you for sharing how to open the tin. This was the first tobacco that I smoked. I just took up pipe smoking. When I received the tin, I could not figure out how to open it. I had to do some online research😂. My first exposure to pipe smoking was when I worked at a grocery store. A manager there smoked some cheap nasty tobacco. This tobacco was nice and mellow-not like that nasty stuff. I’m looking forward to the next review!
:-):-):-):-) This has been wonderful. I purchased a couple of pounds of Match EMP and it does not compare. I pick up the Lat. And the Orientals. I can taste the Virginia tobacco but do not smell it. Fun review and I learned something about the Peterson EMP. I will enjoy this more often. Thank you Muttonchops... Great review...
You my friend are a master you have taught me everything I no about smoking and cleaning my pipes am so glad I found you're channel long time ago god bless 🙏 you all the best from Scottish Highlands 👍
🏅🏅🏅🏅I also love english blends that are lighter and sweeter, and this blend nails that category nicely. Great with on the porch with coffee on a cool, rainy morning such as this one.
👍👍👍 New blend to me. My tin is new, so a bit wet. I need to spread out a pipe full on a piece of paper to dry 10-15 minutes. Smoked in a Turkish meerschaum pipe. A bit harsh, but I may have been trying to keep it lit. Hint of creaminess. Nicotine was a bit high but I may have been puffing harder to keep it lit. The jury's still out on whether it stays in my rotation.
Great video for newbies learning how to open the tin. The 'cupcake-like' paper' does have a purpose. Spread it and use it as a tray to collect droppings. I enjoy Early Morning once to twice a week with morning coffee. It's a great smoke.💨💨💨💨
My first time participating in Blend Club. Fairly new pipe smoker. I smoked 3 bowls so Far, 1st bowls I was not really getting anything from it. 2nd bowl was better, but the 3rd bowl was so enjoyable. Not sure it makes sense but it was buttery smooth. Not sure what I was expecting but I plan on keeping this on hand. It’s got me thinking about cellaring. As far as a rating I give it 😊😊😊 only because my lack of experience to compare it to. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 excellent blend. Tremendous difference in taste between different pipes. Sweet cool and fragrant in wider bowls like Savinelli 920ks and a big Boswell. In smaller bowls, Savinelli bings and Mia Pipa I thought something had gone wrong. Sour, ashy. Not pleasant. I had to make sure it was the same tobacco. Back in a big bowl… amazing.
🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶 Thanks for doing a very interesting blend club for 2023. I hadn’t smoked this in a year as I have been trying out lots of lesser known blends, but smoking this with you now I’m kicking myself for not doing so. My tin has 3 years of age and together with the fragrant orientals which are upfront, it has developed a nice sweetness which wasn’t there when it was new. My favourite light English.
Finally a pleasure to rate a tobacco with you which is also available in Europe. EMP is a blend I discovered very lately. Since then it is a solid companion. I can't discover the campfire attitude, but IMHO you find this taste mostly in Peterson/Dunhill 965 which is my beloved English Mixture. I smoke Latakia blends mainly during the cold period, fall and winter. I agree with you and I give 🙂🙂🙂🙂. All the best and happy puffin'.
This has got to be the best blend club yet. I've been watching you for years, and blend club, while informative, started to feel robotic, scripted and repetitive. I hope you continue to speak on pipe history and have story times during these reviews. It really keeps me interested. Thank you so much for all you've done for our community. We love you!🩷
An excellent tobacco for a newer smoker curious about English blends. It’s a bit too Oriental forward and Latakia light to be one of my favorites, but I still enjoy it on occasion. Like all the Peterson/Dunhill blends, it has a noticeable nic hit. 🍸🍸🍸🍸
🙂🙂🙂🙂 Newbie here I just finished my emp so didn't get to smoke along (more on the way). I have a limited sense of smell so I miss out on all those wonderfully subtle notes but to me the taste of this is amazing as has been mentioned it is the perfect accompaniment to a fresh coffee and sitting watching the world go by in the early morn.
😊😊😊😊 Just started again after 50yrs, no really! And this is my first tobacco since then. Used to smoke Ogdens Gold Block as it was readily available on my Royal Navy ships😊
Hello Muttnchop and fellow pipers. This is my first post..been subscribed for awhile and enjoy all the content. First order of business..blend club. Just so happens I have all the blends for '23, except for the special one you mentioned that becomes available in Aug. As for the Jan blend, EMP, I really enjoyed it. Mellow, creamy, good flavor. Beyond that I couldn't tell Latakia from Latvia..still figuring out all the different taste profiles of the various tobaccos. EMP struck me as a very easy smoke..might be a good introductory blend. Speaking of first smokes, Chris you got me started on Maltese Falcon..that stuff was amazing! Often I read reviews on the different notes of tobacco (especially cigars). And for cigars in particular, my assessment is..tastes like a barn, or straw..etc ( not the most refined palette). But the Maltese was everything you described. Second order of business..a question for anyone..do you ever mix blends? Had basically crumbs left from Pres. Reformation..which were dry as a bone. So I packed pipe 2/3's full with SPC Plum Pudding (Bourbon - very moist), and topped it off with the Reformation to finish off the tin. It is outstanding so far (smoking it as I type). Is this normal..any of you guys do similar? Cheers to all!
Early morning pipe is my number 1 pipe tobacco. I just ordered me a new tin along with My Mixture 965 from Peterson to give it a try. Thanks for the video.
👍👍👍👍 Got my first tin of Early Morning Pipe as well as GL Pease Montgomery. I have been enjoying as a morning smoke for a couple of weeks and truly enjoy with my second cup of coffee. Truly a great blend!
As a new pipe smoker, I hesitate to rate but I will. I have purchased and received every tobacco on the list except October. 😃😃😃😃 is my rating as I will definitely buy it again. As I have learned the breath method, this tobacco is smooth, almost silky. I would definitely try this one. Thank you for the blend club, this is a lot of fun. I appreciate you going over how to load the pipe again, the most frustrating part for me at the moment. Looking forward to the next video!
Haha, when you mentioned the packaging, I fully agree. The way the paper has the uniform ripple when you first open it gives it a little bit of elegance. I just cracked an older Dunhill EMP tin a couple of weeks ago. I love the orientals in this pipe. If I haven’t smoked anything with Latakia in a while it’s about neck and neck for the smell and the taste between the the lat and the orientals. However, when I have been smoking other latakia blends and then smoke this, I can barely smell or taste the latakia and the orientals really shine. That’s a good think for me as I think the orientals in this blend are my favorite component of EMP. Thanks for sharing some of the history behind the blend. Excellent review!
😀😀😀😀I really like this blend! I found 3 tins of Dunhill EMP in a brick-and-mortar & I’ve been nursing them. I confess that I don’t enjoy a pipe in the morning, though; I like one later in the day, after dinner. Unless I’m out in the woods camping…then it’s any time!
I picked up my first pipe last December coming from cigar. I got a tin of this along with a few other recommended blends. This being the first non-aromatic for me. The tin note was a big change up from Autum Evening that I enjoyed first. I really wasn't too big on it the first go, but Im still getting my pipe legs. 2nd and third try have gotten better. For now, I give it a 3 *** (I can't get my emojis to work) I think I will appreciate it more with experience.
Welcome to piping! From my experience, you need to work with a blend a few times (for me it's 5-6) before I really get the hang for a blend, smoking speed, and tasting notes.
@@gee8648 Thanks! So much to learn and experience. I've definitely jumped in with both feet. I've been very quicky picking up a load of different blends to try. This community is a great group.
@@Gallasl666 Pipes are a little bit difficult for me, I found that I am pretty good at keeping a cigar at 65 RH, smoking it while keeping it lit and not burning it too hot. I find that with my low pipe experience, my pot is usually burning too hot or goes out, which is definitely not optimal and I blame my experience with blends on user error and not the blends. Like Greg mentioned, getting better and smoking a blend a few times I tried to learn from my mistakes and I was able to get some more flavors out of them.
@@mad0uche It takes practice. I think I've gathered all the info I can to get me rolling on the right track. Now its just deliberate time with the pipe and enjoy it. Thats what brought me here. Muttonchop is a great teacher.
One of my favourite blends. I start most days with a bowl of EMP. EMP, My mixture 965 and Night Cap are the Peterson holy trinity of pipe tobacco -IMO ;)
I am a new pipe smoker and your videos have been a tremendous help to me thank you for the time you take to do these videos. You are very informative and you do not degrade new pipe smokers.
💜💜💜💜 This was a excellent smoke!!! This was sweet and creamy. What I would say Oriental forward with the Latakia coming in and out as the bowl burns. Moisture was excellent but I did experiment with letting it dry out little more which seemed to enhance everything about it. When I first started to smoke pipes which has been about a year now this was one of the first tins I purchased. At that time not understanding the nature of such a blend it did seem harsh! However, at this point smoking some Balkans and stronger Latakia blends I can really appreciate this a lot better. Oddly at times towards the middle of the bowl I would get this buttery flavor! Since the list for this years Blend Club I actually have been smoking this every morning in a Estate Peterson B 42 with some coffee or tea. I will be getting several more tins for the future. Even at different times during the day or evening this has been a go to!!! Thanks Muttnchop!!!
I agree the components of Oriental and Latakia tobacco with the Virginia's was absolutely wonderful. This truly is an early morning smoke to wake up with. I for one will continue to buy this blend
🐰🐰🐰🐰. I am finally able to taste tobacco in me pipe. It took a few months to learn to draw easy enough along with packing it correctly so I wasn’t toking it too hard. This is my second tobacco now that I’m enjoying. The tin smell reminds me of Mackinaw Island Michigan… lol. Orientals yes take the driving wheel but I’m certainly get a bit of sweetness in the backseat. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your thorough teaching methods. I just started pipe-smoking a year ago last month. I still can’t pick out the flavor notes. Be blessed, my friend. John
I agree with your taste summary. The balance is superb. It's noticebly cool smoking and stays lit. I rate it at 4.25 out of 5 stars. I started piping in 2018 and you are the trusted source that I watched and listened to for how-to and tobacco recommendations. The Breath Method helped me tremendously as I prefer Virginia and VaPer flakes. I have that same Savinelli pipe but haven't broken it in yet. Thank you Sir for helping me in this hobby.
Finally my early morning pipe tobacco arrived and I’m sat with a cup of coffee totally enjoying this tobacco, it’s not overpowering for me it’s just a pleasant enjoyable smoke. And for me I’ll give it 🙂🙂🙂 Again thank you for such a great description of the tobacco look forward to the next one.
I have recently returned to the pipe after an over 20 year hiatus, so it is nice doing a deeper dive this time around The bowl of EMP I had first was using a cheap Chinese-made pipe with a metal insert in the chamber. The Latakia bout smoked my socks off!! Then I tried again in my hardwood billiard. Much less smokiness. This morning I tried with my corncobb and a cup of coffee. Not only was there a light amount of smoke, I picked up on the sweet/sour flavors from the orientals. The buttery notes flowed through out the bowl. Very nice blend that will be a nice addition to the rotation. 🪵🪵🪵🪵

I haven"t smoked early morning pipe since 2017. But I smoked a lot of it. I give it a 10
👍👍👍👍 thank you for sharing how to open the tin.
Rating 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓👍
👍👍👍👍It's smooth and subtle flavors is why I like this blend so much. There really is a lot of flavor to me when I just relax and enjoy.
Cheers! Very nostalgic for me, reminds me of being out hunting. Some of the more seasoned hunters smoked this blend regularly. Brings me right back.
🤠🤠🤠🤠….great smoke
🤩🤩🤩🤩EMP is a great blend. Definitely one of my go-to blends.
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘still relatively new to the pipe but this is currently my favorite
Also love the backdrop, Reminds me of Hee-Haw
Learning so much from my unofficial tobacco pipe mentor. Subscribed!

New piper here.
Incredibly smooth and flavorful. Had my first eureka moment smoking the EMP and noticing the many flavors.
♨♨♨♨ Probably my favorite English blend.
Great video for newbies learning how to open the tin. The 'cupcake-like' paper' does have a purpose. Spread it and use it as a tray to collect droppings. I enjoy Early Morning once to twice a week with morning coffee. It's a great smoke.💨💨💨💨
🐐🐐🐐🐐 always like to see your content one of the best!!! EMP on of my favs
Just got back into pipe smoking glad to see your channel is still here best and most knowledgeable on RUclips keep up the good work 👍🏼
⭐️⭐️⭐️ one of the first tobacco’s recommended to me when I started smoking
Man I like this Early Morning tobacco , the flavor & taste are great. It is so much like Maltese Falcon with taste great too! 👍👍👍👍👍😎😎
My first time participating in Blend Club. Fairly new pipe smoker. I smoked 3 bowls so
Far, 1st bowls I was not really getting anything from it.
Back in a big bowl… amazing.
excellent smoke, I keep it in stock all the time,😀😀😀😀
EMP, one of my all time favorites. Great to see you back Chris!
Wonderful presentation.
I agree with you and I give
🙂🙂🙂🙂.
We love you!🩷
Is this real??
An excellent tobacco for a newer smoker curious about English blends. It’s a bit too Oriental forward and Latakia light to be one of my favorites, but I still enjoy it on occasion. Like all the Peterson/Dunhill blends, it has a noticeable nic hit. 🍸🍸🍸🍸
💪💪💪💪 loved the tobacco , no tongue bite and awesome smoke during the rainy season 👌 Greetings from south africa 🇿🇦
Thank you for the insightful reviews!
🙂🙂🙂🙂
Newbie here I just finished my emp so didn't get to smoke along (more on the way).
Excellent, excellent vid Chris. Thanks a lot. Have a great week.
Early morning pipe is my number 1 pipe tobacco. I just ordered me a new tin along with My Mixture 965 from Peterson to give it a try. Thanks for the video.
👍👍👍👍
Got my first tin of Early Morning Pipe as well as GL Pease Montgomery.
Thank you sir!
EMP is my #1. Nightcap used to be my favorite up until i tried EMP, and I just ordered 965 for the first time to give it a try.
@@Scottydye 965 is my " go to" tobacco
@@jasonkelsey3441 can't wait to try it
I am a new pipe smoker and your videos have been a tremendous help to me thank you for the time you take to do these videos. You are very informative and you do not degrade new pipe smokers.
Thank you for sharing.
⚓️⚓️⚓️⚓️⚓️ good anytime smoke!
And for me I’ll give it 🙂🙂🙂
Again thank you for such a great description of the tobacco look forward to the next one.
👍👍👍👍👍one of my favorites, always up in my stock! Nice clean smoke and perfect with coffee. To me, I get a hint of toast and subtle smokiness. Love it!
