this is a chant from when the Church was a whole.....and all the old roman chants sound so much like the byzantine ones....Love listening to them as an orthodox!
how beautiful this is! when will that day come, when the children of The most high become one again? that both greek and latin, byzantium and the franks, all those who draws the teaching from the twelve will be able to celebrate together.. when either the hosti or the prosphora make no difference, both mass and divine liturgy, The real one, and most holy, and the true Catholic and apostolic? will that day come again?
Beneventan chant is a liturgical plainchant repertory of the Roman Catholic Church, used primarily in the orbit of the southern Italian ecclesiastical centers of Benevento and Monte Cassino distinct from Gregorian chant and related to Ambrosian chant. It was officially supplanted by the Gregorian chant of the Roman rite in the 11th century, although a few Beneventan chants of local interest remained in use … WIKI

Sad to see repeated here the confessional controversies between christians, when the truth is that this music is a common heritage of all apostolic christians, as well as gregorian chant. It was sung in italian churches well before the XIº century schism, when we were still singing greek and latin, at Constantinople, or Rome, Benevento, or Toledo. Why don't you just listen, pray, and hope so one day we could be, at last, reunited?
@@ariel564 hahahahaha.... soon?? Just like the supposed second coming of your christ he promised his disciples standing there, saying he would return before they all died? Like that?? hahahahaha

Well into the Middle Ages, descendants of Greek colonies (founded 8-6th centuries BC and reinforced by Justinian's re-conquest and after) still spoke Greek. There are still isolated pockets in southern Italy of Greek-speakers.
'The "isolated pockets in southern Italy" today are people that escaped the invasion of the Turks in 14th century not from geek colony's.' That's not certain. There are competing theories and one of them is that these Greek pockets have retained their Greek identity since antiquity. The Griko dialect spoken in Calabria for example has preserved some archaisms and Doric characteristics which seems to indicate that the dialect has evolved separately from Koine Greek.

Both greek and latin were used in the liturgy on certain occasions. In fact in the Old Roman Graduale I believe there are over 25 Alleluias which still have greek verses left on them. It seems to be evidence that a certain amount of the oldest latin chant repoitoire was based sung in greek, and or greek melodies, but of course native italian/latin melodies were also composed, and gradually the latin tradition developed its own "sound". last vestiges of greek as the universal liturgical language
LiturgicalChants Both Greek and Latin are used in the Mass still to this day. The Kyrie is in Greek, And at Pontifical Masses, the Gospel is chanted in both Greek and Latin
This is a very interesting recording. I'm intrigued by the Greek-Latin alternation. It sounds like the Greek is chanted in a very 'Byzantine' style? Is this true, or am I just imagining it? Also; is this recording supposed to be anachronistic, or did the medieval Cathedral of Benevento really combine these two languages and styles for liturgical chant?
It's possible that the Beneventans did preserve some liturgical Greek more than the average West of the time due to Greek influence and pop in Southern Italy. Generally speaking, even in the Lombard -led Duchy there was more "Byzantine" than "Latin" culture until late into Norman Conquest of the region and the tragic conflicts in the churches.
@TimRedfern : -The greek verses are chanted in a byzantine style because they are chanted by a great master of byzantine chant -I have no idea whether in medieval times churches in Benevento used to alternate greek and latin in the same service. I think it more possible that there would be churches which used latin and churches which used greek, both in the distinctive style of the area.
A better way to phrase that it is not the singer but the chant itself. Greek chant is byzantine chant, as it comes from the Greek Catholics who are Byzantines who came back into communion with Rome after the Great Schism of the Eastern and Western Rites.
That is false sir. It is Greek Orthodox. And we have not come into communion with Rome. There is a schism in Orthodoxy; one side is in the world council of churches and accept all faiths (including Catholicism) and the other doesn't and rejects the teachings of Rome. Byzantine chant does not come from Roman chant. They are two entirely different chants. Roman has 1 mode (tone) Whereas Byzantine has 27. Also the method used to interpret the tones is completely different. I am an Byzantine Chanter
What schism? Orthodoxy has no such internal schism in the western hemisphere to my knowledge. Also, Orthodoxy has never officially accepted other faiths and has always rejected the teachings of Rome that differ from her own. If you are referring to the Old Calendar divide, that has nothing to do with other faiths. Roman has only 1 tone, Byzantine 27? Where did you get that idea? The Gregorian oktoechos is borrowed from Byzantine chant. The Roman modes may all be in the diatonic genus, but there are still 8 modes in 3 settings, 4 if you include the codified recitative setting, 5 if you include the prosulative setting, both of which Neo-Byzantine lacks, resulting in arguably 40 tones, and that's not including the tones outside the number or the 3 modal scales outside the number that apply to certain processional hymns in the Ars Antiqua repertory. I am also a Byzantine chanter.
you are totally wrong... The 1 tone mode is just one type of roman chant. In fact the old roman chants were not Gregorian; and still today in the roman Church we have different rites and chants : Eastern- bizantine rite, mozarabic, ambrosian, vetus ordo , novus ordo ecc.... U orthodoxy kids have to accept that before 1054 there was only one Church. catholic and apostolic. the term "orthodox" was only an adjective, the Church was orthodox because not heretical; but the church'fathers Always referred to the Church, as catholic.
These are Chants of the Cathedral of Benevento under the influence of Byzantium and Rome independent from bought. There wear many Greek speaking people in the Lombard Duchy of Benevento. The schism happened in in the twelve century this is earlier in the 9th century. Between Rome and Byzantium, by then Benevento was given to the Papacy by the invading Normans.

If the day comes that the West repents for its herecies, returns to the Church, and denies all other agendas, that will be the day it comes.
Niko Delmedico
If the day comes when the Greco-Slavs repent of their pride and prelest and accusing the West of heresy, then that day will come.
If the day comes when both the West and the East discuss the matters with love and no arrogance, then that day will come.
It will come. If not in this world, then in the next one.
