      @@jen.x8489 I really recommend the videos of example full mark (or close to) answers for your texts, but also any videos relevant to the things you need for your exams- even if you just play them in the back when tidying your room or something I learnt soooo much from them

    I really struggle with writing a lot in my essays - I haven't counted, but I think they're probably under 700 words because my handwriting is so slow. Is 6 the minimum amount of points one needs to paragraph or can you do less?

    Hi sir thank you so much for all your videos, I genuinely enjoy listening to the analysis and it really helps with English GCSE!! I have a question for poetry comparison and I’d be so grateful if you could answer it: I find comparing two poems relatively easy without a guideline and always follow the FOSSE structure, but I find it so difficult to compare poems when the question asks us to compare internal conflict or power or anything really. Do you have any tips on relating my poem analysis to the question so I score better marks?? Thanks for all your help!!

      It is as simple as just using the word in the question to form your answer. So, if you think the poem is about political power and the question is about conflict, you simply write power is portrayed through political conflict, or politics is characterised by conflict and a struggle for power. Don’t stress, it always works

    I am doing WJEC Eduqas fro English Lit GCSE and for the Macbeth questions there are a 15 marker and 25 marker (5 marks for spag in that one). How many paragraphs for each question would you recommend? :)

      I don’t know. Ask your teacher for some model answers from the exam board and see how many they do

      Hi, I'm on the same exam board and I might have an answer you would find helpful.
      For the Macbeth 15 marker, you should ideally be doing about 3 of a shorter length as they are focused on a key scene rather than the whole play. For this you must be looking at 3 key moments. For the 25 marker, I would structure it as an opening paragraph (thesis), then 3 middle paragraphs that follow the actual question, then a conclusion which wraps things up.
      For the post 1914 prose and 18th century text, you're following a simular structure to the 25 marker. The Shakespeare section of the exam is just like those but with a 15 marker put before it.

    Wait just for confirmation:
    Should we prepare key quotations for each character and memorize an in-depth analysis (feminist viewpoint and language etc), and use it once in our essay?
    Then the rest of the quotes, in the essay, we just use them in our "key moments" paragraphs with no analysis at all (not even language)? or should we still carry out a minimal analysis?

      In an older video “How to pick quotes” or something. He said to pick 5 themes and 5 quotes for each theme minimum. Physics and Maths Tutor has a bunch of notes and tips. They also have a section for “themes” so you can condense them to 5

    Sir could you give a rough mark for this answer. My teacher gave it it 19/30 yet I tried to do everything you said
    The question was how does dickens present the effects of isolation and loneliness in a Christmas carol?
    In a Christmas carol, dickens presents the effects of loneliness and isolation on an individual, in the character of Ebeneezer Scrooge. Through his transformation from a lonely miser due to past life experiences, to a benevolent father figure and family man, Dickens highlights the consequences of social isolation. He is asking his readers to consider what life events may have caused their greed, mistreatment of the poor and character flaws, in order for them to be able to correct it, and transform like Scrooge does, consequently promoting a philanthropic society, reducing the social disparity.
    Shakespeare initially presents Scrooge’s isolation, through the similar “solitary as an oyster”, creating a comical image of Scrooge, as a reader would know that oysters live in clusters. Through Dickens use of the extended metaphor of coldness in “no wintry weather could (…)” dickens is highlighting the effects and extent isolation has on Scrooge, as he is now too, isolated from nature and the weather as it “had no effect on him”. Dickens also emphasises this, in the list of “no children (…) even a blind mans dog”,, in order to create a harsh enough character, so that his transformation could be great. The effects of loneliness and isolation, on the wider society is seen when the charity workers, come to ask Scrooge, to donate, to which he replies “ leave me alone.” Scrooges wanting to remain isolated has caused him to become completely out of touch with the reality of the poor, to the extent that he doesn’t care if “ they want to die, then let them do so”, showing how his loneliness has consequently caused him to loose any empathy or value for human life. He then says “ and decrease the surplus population”, which was a common belief among the upper class, created by Thomas Malthus. dickens could be hinting that as a result of their isolation from the poor, that they begin to disregard the value of their life, and would prefer if they were dead, not acknowledging the poor are real people.
    Dickens takes Scrooge on a journey with the 3 ghosts, in order for Him to understand what in his life has caused him to isolate himself and become a miser. When the ghost of Christmas past take Scrooge to his old boarding school Dickens could have used emotive language in “solitary child neglected”, and ‘he sobbed” In order to draw in sympathy from the reader for Scrooge, and to also emphasise the significance this had on Scrooges life. The place is also described using “dreary”, “cold and vast” and “melancholy” to add to the emotive language. Dickens may be trying to ensure that this abandonment of Scrooge by his father and presumably his mother as she’s never mentioned, had significant consequences on the rest of Scrooges life which could’ve been a ultimately led to his isolation today. in this way Dickens is asking his readers to take a look at their own personal lives and see what events may have caused the character flaws and mistreatment of the poor so that they can correct it and improve their own lives and the lives of society as a whole.
    Scrooge is once again abandoned and left isolated when his sister fran metaphorically abandons him in her death. his love for Fran is clear as “he sobbed “on seeing her again. the ghost asks him if she left any children And he says “one child “, showing that she may have died young, as well as explaining Scrooges aversion to Fred and that’s why he cannot reply to him when he says’ why cannot we be friends’ because Fred reminds him of his sister and that causes him great pain. It is also possible that Scrooge believes Fred will abandon him and therefore he wants to prevent that by never having a relationship with him.
    However Dickens shows in Scrooge’s choice of bell as his lover, this could have been him unconsciously choosing someone that will abandon him to repeat the previous patterns of his life as many years later she still has young children, showing that Scrooge chose a much younger woman than him as he unconsciously knew she would leave him for a younger man. Through belle calling out his replacement of her with these “golden Idols “. The use of the noun ‘idle’suggest a pagan God, possibly suggesting to the audience that Scrooge has isolated himself from the God of Christianity. however perhaps Scrooge began to collect and hold money, not even spend it on himself, as seen in the “gruel “he eats, maybe because money, is the only thing that cannot abandon him and therefore he becomes obsessed with it
    Scrooges biggest pain is as seeing the loss of what could have been his child when he says “and Been a springtime in the haggard winter of my life “, suggesting that children bring the meaning of life to a person, just a spring brings life back in the year. this could be implying that one of the biggest effects of his withdrawal in isolation was his loss of a chance at fatherhood. Dickens is appealing to the Victorians love of children to think about the consequences of the isolation from the poor and therefore their mistreatment
    This may be why the catalyst of Scrooges change is his discovery of a tiny Tim as if he Changes he will allow and help Tiny Tim to live there for giving him a second chance at fatherhood which is why he asked the ghosts if Tiny Tim were live or not. Dickens use of half rhyme in the ghost description of empty chimney corner (…) without an owner “, could imply that Tiny Tim‘s death is not set in stone and his fate could change, only if Scrooge changes though. Scrooges concern for the life of tiny Tim, is further seen when he asks a ghost of Christmas yet to come, after seeing his grave if “these shadows are unaltered “ the use of the plural demonstrative pronoun, shows he is referring to the shadows of Tiny Tim as well and he only cares about whether he will live or not because if he live, he can ensure, Tiny Tim lives and be a second father to him. this may be Dickens’s way of questioning his Victorian audiences beliefs, that this world is just an endurance and our reward will be given in heaven as Scrooge wants to live to improve the quality of Tiny Tim‘s life now, instead of letting him just die so he can receive his reward in heaven. This criticism of Christian beliefs may be because of his dislike towards the church as they had sufficient political power to help the poor but chose not to and didn’t follow the teachings of Jesus.
    In the end Scrooge become ‘like a second for a second father to Tiny Tim’ and goes to spend Christmas day with Fred, reversing the effect of the series of abandonment an alarm to be a stark contrast of his character in stave one evening a physical appearance as he is described as “in a glow“ to emphasis the extent of the damage social and social isolation can do to a person, and what he consequently does to society

      @@swaheed5359 You don't need to get everything down. I did my essays in this march mock using three long paragraphs each. Got 29/30 for the Christmas Carol one and was only 2 marks away from a grade 8 in the entire Eng Lit mocks.
      Prioritize being clear and concise rather than explaining everything. Pick the point that you are most familiar with when answering the question and elaborate, then elaborate and dont forget to elaborate some more. Also, don't rush it. You have more time than you think during the exam and planning your answer rather than winging it will always be more successful, and the examiner will be able to see that you've planned your answer in the booklet.
      Random advice from a year 11 student here, you dont have to take it; just a suggestion of mine.

      It is quite good, however I used to do the same thing as you, I think you should focus more on each quite and the effect of the reader before you move on to your next point to really make sure the examiner knows what point your trying to make

      Also, apologies for another question, but i'm in year 10, & we're studying Macbeth this term. However, I find the idea of being presented with a Shakespearan extract to analyse on the spot rather daunting due to a lack of familiarity & understanding of the vocab. Is it simply a matter of time & practice, or must I hold some concern regarding us being 3 weeks into the play & me still not getting the gist of what's being said at certain points? Most of it still feels completely foreign.

    A Christmas carol written by Dickens serves as an allegorical cautionary tale highlighting the societal consequences of neglecting the poor whilst critiquing the government / upper classes' inadequate support. Dickens condemns not only Malthusian beliefs but also frugal employers who exploit their workers in which they cannot alleviate their financial crisis due to inadequate wages.

    How is Scrooge presented in ACC?
    Dickens develops Scrooge’s attitudes as evolving standpoints to criticise selfish employers due to their greed and inhuman treatment of the poor, to advocate for a more philanthropic society and to offer didactic lessons to alter society for the better.
    Dickens presents the cruelty that Scrooge expresses towards the poor as unfair and inhumane in Stave 1, when Bob Cratchit is described to be in a ‘dismal little cell’. This imagery implies an unpleasant, confined space, suggesting that Scrooge is almost imprisoning his employee. Dickens denotes Scrooge’s arrogance as he’s ‘hard and sharp as flint’ yet he hasn’t given out ‘generous fire’. Dickens subtly suggests that it’s within flint’s nature to give out ‘generous fire’, thus foreshadows Scrooge’s later transformation. Later, Dickens portrays Scrooge as ‘solitary as an oyster’. Although a modern audience may interpret an ‘oyster’ to be secluded from society, perhaps containing a pearl, meaning warmth within Scrooge, a contemporary audience would view the simile as quite comic. ‘Oysters’ were widely available to the working classes, often clustering in thousands, thus a richer interpretation would suggest Scrooge symbolises the poor, hinting he too would soon join the ‘thousands’.
    Scrooge later encounters ‘Old Marley’, who seemingly has more ‘gravy than grave’ about him. Dickens purposefully makes the alliteration quite comic displaying Scrooge as a pantomime like villain. However, it also reveals Dickens’ deep fascination with education and literacy, by giving Scrooge a creative imagination, allowing fictional character such as ‘Robin Crusoe’ and ‘Ali Baba’ come to life, makes his transformation more realistic. In stave 2, we encounter young Scrooge, ‘intent upon his reading ‘. Maybe, Dickens wants the audience to realise that education is a mighty force, being able to give ‘yonder solitary child’ hope, in the same way it could create more opportunities for the poor. Scrooge is alleviated from his ‘neglected’ state when his sister Fan comes to pick him up, despite his father bring ‘so much kinder’ and making the home ‘like heaven’, he is still cold and distant to Scrooge, thus why he didn’t come. Dickens portrays ‘heaven’ as an illusion, as despite Scrooge’s father not being deliberately cruel, he still has loathing towards him. Perhaps Dickens is alluding to God not being able to provide warmth and comfort to the poor, so he asks his readers instead. However, he may be drawing a parallel to the greatest transformation of all- the God of the old testament to the god of the new testament. Arguably, Dickens taps into his reader’s Christian faith, and uses it to help them believe that the greatest transformation is possible.
    From a cyclical, analytical perspective, Scrooge’s misanthropy isn’t created by greed but by his pattern of abandonment. The ghost of Christmas past helps deliver the psychological basis showing how he was abandoned by his father as a ‘forgotten boy’. However, the ghost has a social purpose, as Scrooge is saved by his education. He is then metaphorically abandoned by his mother then his ‘delicate’ sister, Fan, creating deep trauma for him. Dickens offers both Scrooge and the audience how to escape this pattern of attachment when Scrooge understands he needs to become a ‘second father’ to Tiny Tim. Dickens suggests employers should become benefactors to their employees. Scrooge then pictures a daughter who ‘might have called him father and been a spring-time in the haggard winter of his life’. Dickens uses imagery of the seasons to emphasise how fatherhood is an essential natural experience, allowing Scrooge to realise he can erase the cruelty of his own father.
    Dickens introduces the ‘ragged’ and ‘wolfish’ ‘Ignorance and Want’. Dickens is opposed to scrooge’s Malthusian justification of making the poor ‘die’ to ‘decrease the surplus population’. He discredits this view by giving it to the villain and allows the reader to realise the flaws of their inhumane thinking. He also threatens the audience with ‘ignorance’ warning that id society does not alter its ways it will be face with ‘doom’. Which foreshadows the later civil unrest, rising of crime, and revolutions of 1848.
    In stave 5, Scrooge’s reformation comes full circle, going from the corpse like Scrooge with his ‘his low temperature’ to becoming almost like a ‘baby’. Dickens plays with the theme of rebirth to tap into his audience’s beliefs, as they celebrate the birth of baby Jesus.
    Herby, Dickens utilises psychological understanding to create Scrooge’s attitudes, yet he emphasises on raising Bob’s ‘salary’ to create a more independent and stable society, which perhaps is the ‘ghost of an idea’ he hopes will ‘haunt’ his readers.
