    This is awesome for someone like me who has no traditional training. This gives me a better idea of what I can and SHOULD do with these instruments 👍🏻👍🏻

    As a woodwind player myself I felt this was a truly excellent tutorial! A tremendous amount of work and planning to showcase the colours and potential of this family of the orchestra. I would have liked to see a look at the clarinet in the 3rd register as it is so distinctive, but other than that this is a fabulous tutorial! Even my non-musician husband was following along and enjoying this. 🎶🎶🎶😊

    I assume the overlap of the notes is for legato but why is the overlap so large? Is there an audible difference depending on the amount of overlap?

  • @SebHJMusic

    This is such a great video to show the exciting potential of woodwinds in orchestration. Just simply combining contrabassoon with double basses to give a deep, rich and dark tone, or oboes with muted trumpets for a vey punchy and bright sound all makes a massive difference to the colouristic effects and nuances in a composition.

    great timing, I have an assignment due in 3 weeks and I could use a strong woodwind section !!
    On an extra note, I study film music and a lot of my classmates tend to ignore the woodwind. There's a lot of young composers influenced by Hans Zimmer and they take his brass + string-focused writing very literally 😅

    • @VFXCommander
      @VFXCommander 3 года назад +4

      How unfortunate. I don't think studying Hans Zimmer's work would solidify your orchestration art like the old masters.

    • @delta61
      @delta61 3 года назад +4

      Hans Zimmer used Woodwinds on quite many scores though. Also, bassons and contrabassons are like the perfect blend between horns and celli (which is really, really useful for some motif melodies) and the sound is just something else! And clarinets work so well as more friendly, calm horns. Well, flutes speak for themselves.

    • @emmanouela4330
      @emmanouela4330 3 года назад +3

      @@delta61 that is true! But a lot of people focus on his score for the Dark Knight in particular and take away the percussive use of strings and heavy use of brass when it comes to notable orchestral features. I actually had another classmate give advice on orchestration and said to not bother with woodwinds because nobody cares, and his favourite composer is John Williams 😅 Until this video I ignored them a lot too so I'm giving them attention now!

    • @delta61
      @delta61 3 года назад +3

      @@emmanouela4330 Well woodwinds are indeed hard to hear and people confuse them for other instruments while they hear the complete orchestra. I've also just started realizing the massive potential there is. They really add to the palettebof instruments and putting them in front really gives a unique feel to the whole piece.

    I'm confused about the "universal starting point" that was supposed to be the BBCSO and the re-release of this library. I enjoy the BBCSO but it feels like a bit of a bait and switch. Words have weight, including the marketing involved with products. I've really toned down the spending on libraries for this reason.
