This is awesome for someone like me who has no traditional training. This gives me a better idea of what I can and SHOULD do with these instruments 👍🏻👍🏻
As a woodwind player myself I felt this was a truly excellent tutorial! A tremendous amount of work and planning to showcase the colours and potential of this family of the orchestra. I would have liked to see a look at the clarinet in the 3rd register as it is so distinctive, but other than that this is a fabulous tutorial! Even my non-musician husband was following along and enjoying this. 🎶🎶🎶😊
This is such a great video to show the exciting potential of woodwinds in orchestration. Just simply combining contrabassoon with double basses to give a deep, rich and dark tone, or oboes with muted trumpets for a vey punchy and bright sound all makes a massive difference to the colouristic effects and nuances in a composition.
great timing, I have an assignment due in 3 weeks and I could use a strong woodwind section !! On an extra note, I study film music and a lot of my classmates tend to ignore the woodwind. There's a lot of young composers influenced by Hans Zimmer and they take his brass + string-focused writing very literally 😅
Hans Zimmer used Woodwinds on quite many scores though. Also, bassons and contrabassons are like the perfect blend between horns and celli (which is really, really useful for some motif melodies) and the sound is just something else! And clarinets work so well as more friendly, calm horns. Well, flutes speak for themselves.
@@delta61 that is true! But a lot of people focus on his score for the Dark Knight in particular and take away the percussive use of strings and heavy use of brass when it comes to notable orchestral features. I actually had another classmate give advice on orchestration and said to not bother with woodwinds because nobody cares, and his favourite composer is John Williams 😅 Until this video I ignored them a lot too so I'm giving them attention now!
@@emmanouela4330 Well woodwinds are indeed hard to hear and people confuse them for other instruments while they hear the complete orchestra. I've also just started realizing the massive potential there is. They really add to the palettebof instruments and putting them in front really gives a unique feel to the whole piece.
Great video Oliver. I like the educational approach supported as always by your excellent composition. Time to apply the learning to some new arrangements!
I'm confused about the "universal starting point" that was supposed to be the BBCSO and the re-release of this library. I enjoy the BBCSO but it feels like a bit of a bait and switch. Words have weight, including the marketing involved with products. I've really toned down the spending on libraries for this reason.
Great video Oliver really useful, you explain it all very well I've learned a lot from this, thank you so much. Are there any plan to do similar videos for strings and brass ? Take care be safe, and healthy, look forward to your next video, best wishes Terry
Hola! Debieran poner sub títulos en español a sus vídeos, les aseguro que tienen un mercado de habla hispana muy grande que se los agradecerá. Saludos!
Can you give me an organization tip on delivery? Your delivery is perfect, the visual aid, the sounds are good, the organization on the chapters, like wtf. Good!
Oliver, I have a question: on the extreme right of your Korg controller you clearly have mapped expression and dynamic, on extreme left there is as you mentioned the vibration and what else?
I can't find the source of these in particular, but most orchestration texts seem to have something like them. Rimsky-Korsakov's is public domain, I think.
I know saxophones aren't included in wind sections, but I was hoping I'd see one included in an instrument repository... Sax always being done dirty... :( Otherwise nice set of samples.

Maybe my favorite Spitfire tutorial to date. This was incredibly helpful. Thank you, Oliver!
Hi guys, Oliver here from Spitfire Audio, here we have several instruments, including our newest weapon, the bassoon-bazooka.
Bassooka?
The way Oliver teaches or shares is very generous. Special talent!

Jeez, O.P.Dubbs is a BEAST with his use of Spitfire's libraries.
I assume the overlap of the notes is for legato but why is the overlap so large? Is there an audible difference depending on the amount of overlap?

How unfortunate. I don't think studying Hans Zimmer's work would solidify your orchestration art like the old masters.

Hans Zimmer uses woodwind, for layering with different instruments, for example in Interstellar woodwind contributed a lot
Amazing composition .
Great walkthrough and enjoyed your composition.
Thank you! This is actually a really well done quick video on woodwinds orchestration. I enjoyed it immensely!!
a tutorial on those fast runs would be great, they seem hard to program
That piece was fricken gorgeous! 😍
I really like this format with the orchestration techniques within the demo. Very cool
Very haunting composition and extremely thorough but simple explanation.
Thanks Oliver!
Please make the same series both for Brass and Mallets
The perfect soundtrack for when you are in a public toilet and you've just realised there is no toilet paper, but it's much too late.
Great video Oliver. I like the educational approach supported as always by your excellent composition. Time to apply the learning to some new arrangements!
A great video that is as enjoyable as it is educational. Thank you Oliver.
This was a very informative and helpful video. Would love to see a similar video for brass instruments!
Thanks for sharing the woodwinds, all you need to know about the different woodwinds.
Great composition and presentation!
Loved the information about the instruments range and the roles for the instruments.
Very nice composition, Oliver. Great samples, Spitfire Audio.
The vibrato on the clarinet is intense.
Thanks for this informative video! I plan to use woodwinds more in my songs (although I don't really write actual orchestral music)
Nice that they have the same instruments - there's a thought for the BBCSO Core... 😉
Nice video. It would be cool, to have this kind of video for brass and strings to. The orchestration informations are a good thing

So what do you want? It really is a great universal starting point and is a fantastic library, especially the pro version.

Make videos for every sections like this.
Thanks
Great video Oliver. Thanks for this.
What is the device that you're controlling the vibrato with?

Juan a estudiar inglés!
BBCSO update yet...ensembles and instruments...BBC is the Gem of Spitfire Audio supouse
This piece is incredible!

thank you for the great idea and well done
After purchasing this I was really thinking about how to get more out of the woodwinds. Thanks for reading my mind!
Oliver, I have a question: on the extreme right of your Korg controller you clearly have mapped expression and dynamic, on extreme left there is as you mentioned the vibration and what else?
Piece reminds me of how Ravel would orchestrate.
Nice piece Oliver
What expression controller are you using?
Very nice! From which book or resource are these images like 5:15? I hope to see a video like this one for brass as well!

Great video, thanks
Great overview!
Wow, VEEERY well done! Although the vibrato on the clarinet could make someone fall from the chair! 😂😂😂
i need this info in a PFD NOW
Very well writen :)

Secret weapon
Good demo, but I think it still showcases that woodwinds are generally the weakest link in orchestral sampling.
