    I'd suggest putting some acoustic treatment in the room - I hate foam blocks so I used several 'beech sheet' towels wrapped in velvet or a duvet cover. Velvet is better as it diffuses sound. 18' is big and the shape of your room is right. I trust you have payed with speakers placement? AN and Snell speakers use the wall as an extension of the cabinet so placement is vital - same with some horns.

    The Sound --- People gotta realize that the sound quality that you are listening to is not respective to the sound system the OP has. It's been severely altered by the recording microphone on his camera, then compressed and sent to youtube, then formatted probably in another compressed format, then downloaded to your computer, which plays the compressed format. I guarantee, it aint lossless. So all your comments and opinions about the sound of his system are rather useless....

      you are definitely right. But please allow me to suggest you to listen to Kenrick Sound videos on YT. Kent: Yeah, this guy bought a house and there where two small 'doorways' in the wall. He contacted the estate agent and the previous owner arrived the next day. He was an old boy and as you correctly say, he was into pie organ music. He brought some amps the next week and the new owner was stunned so he got into valve hifi too! :o) AN-E go down to 15Hz, Snell C are lower and the Snell A's are the only speaker that can reproduce the 'Arch Angel' sound from Apocalypse Now.

    Very well done. Not familiar with that back-loaded horn boxes tho. Well executed horns with SET amp (300b or 805) are hard to beat. Ofcause I am bias. But then again, not many from those who posted dumb comments ever heard double mouth backloaded horns or horn loaded woofers. Horns are perfectly capable of sufficient bass and do it better than one tone, simple boom boxes. I do agree with some pointers about more aggressive room acoustic treatment. There are more then few ways to reduce unwanted reflections with simple and room friendly tricks. Other then that, kudos for very interesting setup.

    Oh, since Peter Snell died so has all the invention and most of the secrets that he never wrote down. Like Quad that are a name owned by two Chinese brothers, Snell today are a total waste of time and money. The horns I heard where powered by single ended 2A3 amps and where totally gracious. Strings sounded like a real string section - I used to pay violin so I know :o) The only flaw was that they where silicon rectified which made them harder than they could with a valve rectifier.

    I didnt care for them, then I discovered hifi and suddenly Dire Straits became staple diet They must have a deal with retailers or manufactures - they're in every demo room I've ever been in! Of course the reality is excellent, inspired musicianship, a brown sugar-sweet sound signature that has wormed into my soul over the years, and production technique that is, no doubt, famous within the industry. It just, I dont know - changes when a decent system gets a hold of it. I mean its sudenly there!

    Subwoofer - Whats that disco boy? :o) These speakers use Lowther PM6 drivers yes? So they should have lots of bass. Air is a fluid, if you have your head as far from the wall behind you as the speakers are from the wall behind them then you will have optimum bass. This may need to be adjusted - nearer the wall equals tighter bass.

    The trouble with working for AN was that it was like living on the surface of the sun - all the universe was blackness to us. I've seen these amps at shows but I couldn't tell you what it was. 'Crap' jumps to mind though! Recently there have been some pro-recording interfaces using 35v transistors and they sound seriously good - the linearity is as good as valve. But thats not power amps.
    I'd recommend SE triode for the horns and a PP amp for the bass, valve or transistor.

    I don't know if you're still around, but I'm curious about your speaker build. First, I usually see these speakers in single-driver configurations, and am curious about the reasons you added tweeters, and specifically these, what appear to be ribbon tweeters? It's a little hard to see what's going on with the "stovepipes" that they're mounted in. I though at first that they were connected to the white structure behind the speakers, but I see that in other videos now with other speakers; are these simply some sort of acoustic baffle? Anyway, nice openness of sound, obviously the upper ranges are well-covered here. I certainly appreciate the work you put into your system too!

    I'm noticing some of the comments that are attempting to troll the OP. We need to realize that most of us are forced to work around the environment that we have, not the other way around.
    To the OP - How was the build on this DIY for you? Did you get the kit from Madisound? Now that a few years have passed, what are your opinions on the project and it's outcome?
    Also, love the musical choices.

  • @3Deity
    @3Deity 12 лет назад

    Err - I don't have Lowthers! I knew a guy who worked for Lowthers and he had some big speakers with PM6 drivers and they where okay. Not many real instruments have lots of bass. I recently got a pair of AR38s for free and can't wait to refoam them and have them running with my Radford. I might replace the paper tweeter with a Vifa 3/4" too.

  • @drc97086
    @drc97086 7 лет назад

    Just a question, which is perhaps way too late. Did you playing with the stuffing in the labyrinth? Too many upper bass/midbass tones are making this sound nasally. I love the fullrange driver concept, but a bunch of practice and luck is involved in getting as few compromises as possible. Except for the nasality, and a bit of brightness, I like the sound. Perhaps I want to like it a lot more than I think. I don't know why.

  • @franol7

    I am not convinced, still hear tiny wood box resonance If I close my eyes I would know for sure that the sound comes from wooden box. Muffling inside is needed.It would make good as well to upholster the duct with absorbing material.The cross cut is rectangular ,that shape is in favour to make unkontroled resonance

    Those speakers should be pulled away from the walls and have nothing between them at least nothing large to interfere with the sound wave interaction. Having a window on one side and a bare wall on the other likely isn't helping either.

    • @aparneomai

      ***** sure and that table with the fruit and grass between the listener and the speakers is optimum never mind the window and rather bare wall but then again maybe you like the sound of a hallway.

    don't you find their placement so near the rear wall and especially near the side walls to be way to reflective? Some absorption panels on the rear and some deflection panels on the side just in front of the speakers would quiet down the intense reflections in the room. I am not knocking your setup, looks great, but it sound a bit harsh because of the size of the room. I face the same problem, which is why I commented.

    Well, you could use a bigger driver. I'm looking at 18" cones as the air movement per watt is in a different league. There was that guy in Kent who made a pair of 64' concrete horns with 1" drivers at the end, he built the house around them. From what I've heard, the Fostex and Lowther drivers do seem very bass light. All the AN speakers are based off Snell designs and they have huge bass for the driver size. I tried Snell Cs in a big room and the dominate the place!
