Trains at: Folkestone West, SEML, 21/12/23

A very windy and cold session spent at Folkestone West on the South Eastern Mainline where we see services purely from South Eastern.
Folkestone West was opened in in 1863 originally as Shorncliffe Camp, the first station was built as a simple two platform structure either side of a double track layout. It was then rebuilt in 1881 with two platform faces either side of four tracks.
In 1887 a bay platform was added to the station for the introduction of terminating services for the Elham Valley Railway which brought services to and from Canterbury.
The station was tinkered with during the 1960 - 1961 Kent Coast Electrification Scheme.
When the channel tunnel was opened there was a sudden loss in boat trains coming through the station, as a result of this it meant the two through tracks were removed.
In 2008 there was some extra work done to the station to allow for a larger car park and a coach park, this was for the then Orient Express which was running from Folkestone Harbour station, which no longer exists.

Ooo, interesting. Lovely to see the SEML getting a bit of notice!! Folkestone west has better sight lines . Westenhanger will be a good vlog with the added benefit of Eurostar services
