    I recall 6th grade history.Band was before history,so of course I had my metronome with me.Suddenly,when we were taking a test,it turns on,and everyone started screaming because they thought I had a bomb.I tried to explain,but I couldn't be heard by the shrieks of innocent children.It was getting quicker,so they thought it was about to go off.They ran out of the room,and once everyone was outside I was able to tell them that it was a metronome.Yeah,I delayed the test by almost half an hour and no one talked to me for the rest of the day.

    Tuner and metronomes are also apps and work well. :)
    Use a dollar bill for sticky pads.
    I go to fed ex and have all my music copied then immediately turn in the originals. For a couple bucks you have music you can mark up to your hearts content and if they get spills or torn, no biggie.

    Ear plugs - not sure if you know, but you can get plugs that are especially moulded to your ears and have attenuators in them. Preserving original sound without distortions that foam plugs make. Usually they are called Musicians plugs, come in 9, 15 or 25 dB. Your local hearing clinic / audiologist can make them for you. :)

    As a violinist, I also bring an extra set of strings. Because you never know, when a string or a friends strin breaks, and then they come in handy. (even though I carry the extra cheap one for the emergency. You know.. I doesn't have to be the extra expensive Prirastro Obligato for 72 EUR/ Set, if you can have a set for 2 EUR doing the same job.)

    The embouchure is completely different--much smaller, and the pressure from shooting the air out is much much higher. The trick is to force yourself to switch frequently between flute and piccolo during your practice sessions to train your embouchure to switch between the two. You're not the first to ask me this question, so this is going on my list of videos to make. :)

  • @JustAnotherFlutist
    @JustAnotherFlutist  12 лет назад +2

    Wow, didn't expect so many people to want a 1st piccolo video. It's really just the same as picking your first flute though! I shall think about it though. :)

      Taekweenie Often it's best to keep a music stand with you for a show or an emergency when there's no stands. I use mine in an extracurricular band. Also most piccolo players ALSO play flute. Flute is often is the main and they switch to picc for part of or all of certain performances.

    I played glute/piccolo in high school band, and recently joined a community band where I play flute/piccolo. I can't believe no one has ever told me to wear an ear plug! I definitely have the beginnings of tinnitus in my right ear, but hopefully if I take care and use an ear plug it won't get any worse.

    I have the same Hercules stand with the flute and piccolo pegs, love it. Mine came with two flute pegs and a piccolo peg. I get teased sometimes at band rehearsal because I keep all my stuff in a wheeled computer bag. It holds my flute, piccolo, cleaning kit, tuner, three pencils, two folders of band music, and the Hercules stand, a bottle of water and some breath mints. I always have a mint before rehearsal and have a bottle of water handy to stay hydrated. Although....I've played piccolo since high school (koffkoff years ago) and have never worn ear plugs

    • @candle3652
      @candle3652 8 лет назад +1

      I think you should! When I was younger, I remember that every time a flutist stopped playing, they either quit band all together or switch to saxophone. It was like there was no other option. They said the saxophone fingering is very similar to the flute. And Bryan is right. Since there's no resistance on the flute, you'll just have to get used to playing with a little more pressure on the saxophone (that's why you see their cheeks puff up!).

    I think actaully need that stand. The one I have is just a budget Amazon one and it’s frustrating to use. It has these antenna peg thingy (idk what it’s called) that you can adjust ti hold down the sheet music. The issues are that 1, the antennas block the sheet music, and 2, they end up coloring and scratching my sheet music. It looks like a graphite mistake lol.

    Can anyone really tell the difference between 440Hz and 442Hz?

      Thomas Mulligan Are you saying the human ear can detect a 2Hz difference in frequency? I've done a little reading on the subject and based on that it requires at best a 3% change in frequency in order for humans to detect a change. That means the minimum change would be 440Hz to about 453Hz in order for a human to detect the change. From 440Hz to 442Hz is less than 0.5% and even in the frequency range most sensitive to humans (2000Hz) it requires a 6Hz change for it to be noticed.

      While independently you might not be able to hear the difference. In an ensemble, the difference will cause the notes to beat. Plus as the octave increases, the number of cycles between the pitches increases.

      Our band tunes to 442 because that’s what the marimbas are tuned to.

    Should you wear ear plugs every time you play piccolo? Of course when you practice but about during rehearsals and performances?
