This week I show you how I sew small scraps to adding machine or calculator paper tape. Sewing scraps to foundation paper allows you to get a consistent width without all the hard work.
Come back to this channel to see what you can do with your scrap fabric strips.
Adding machine tape is non-thermal. Register tape is thermal. Non thermal is preferred. Thermal paper can deteriorate over time or turn black. Adding machine tape is sturdy but still removes easily.
Here's some on Amazon:

Be careful and read the description on all listings so you get the width you want.

This week I show you how to sew fabric scraps to foundation paper using adding machine tape. Pop in and see how to make your fabric scraps work for you.
RsIslandCrafts - Robin Thank you for replying. I have subscribed to your channel and requested notifications. Thanks again!
Rene Tiede Thank you! If I say or do some thing confusing just let me know and I'll show you a different way or view if I can. We have to keep the new quilters quilting. 😁
Fun!
RsIslandCrafts- Robin
I saw somewhere on the internet if we save all the little scraps from our trimming that we normally throw away we can put them outside in a bowl and birds will make nests with them and it brightens their nests up
🤣
Rewatching 😊 I have been using cash register tape that I get from my shopping, I just glue them together to get a big roll then I use it either for this or to collage paper on it for paper crafts. Love to rewatch your videos ❤
I’m always happy to keep you company 😎. Great tip! Thanks for sharing.
Just came across your video. My great grandmother ' mama' gave me her old storage sewing kit, and inside I saw all these rolls of materials she sewed together with news paper. Thank you so much for this video. She died at 101 . Now I can make the last quilt she couldn't finish. Thank you again!
P.S. she never used a sewing machine.
+shannon Williams What a treasure!! I just started hand sewing blocks for a quilt. I keep thinking It will fall apart because It isn’t machine sewn. Then I remind myself that people hand stitched quilts a 100 years ago and they are still around today and they used to beat their clothes on rocks to clean them. A wall hanging on my craftroom wall will be fine even if my stitches are bit wonky. Thanks for visiting with me in my craftroom and sharing your story!!
@Shannon Williams, I hope you were able to finish "mama's" final quilt. I'd love to hear about it and see a picture.
I had a similar thing many years ago. My maternal grandmother had started a hexie quilt before her 2nd stroke in 1986. My aunt put it away and forgot about it. Fortunately, it was rescued before the flood waters got to it.
I finally finished it with my mother-in-law, just in time for my Mom to use it in hospice. It's been a fantastic heirloom, memory quilt for our family since 2009.
Peace and Blessings.
@@billiwickey Wonderful story and such sweet memories.
@@rsislandcrafts Be sure to use a small needle that won't pierce the fabrics with big holes. Use good cotton thread. Polyester is more abrasive. Tie a knot every five stitches, in case the threat makes somewhere along the line. Enjoy the journey. I love to sew by hand.
Lucky you. Isn't that something back in the day they didn't have sewing machines? I often wonder how the pioneer ladies survived with expecting or nursing half of the time, cleaning in a dirt floor cabin. washing on a rock and wringing the clothes by hand, teaching the children to read and write or at least some nursery rhymes. telling them stories. sewing and mending by hand, making soap. cooking. preserving foods. spinning, perhaps raising the smaller animals; ie., chickens, lambs, and then butchering them, helping their husband out in the field at harvest time then there's that bedtime stuff. The list is endless. The men had plenty to do also. Hot hard heavy work. Not shortchanging them at all.
BUT~~~
"A man's work is from sun to sun...A woman's work is never done!"
Happy to find a solution for those bits I can't throw away!! This also jogged a memory of a quilt top I purchased once at a flea market that still had pages of a 1940's romance novel on the back. But I love the idea of using calculator tape because I like smaller-sized scrappy pieces and the paper is ready to use right off the roll. Thank you, Robin!
I’ve heard people used newspapers for their quilts but a romance novel is a new one for me. What a fun find.
my sister is a preschool teacher - i give her the little scraps to paste on paper with the kids when doing collages and art work
That’s a wonderful use of fabric scraps.
I have been quilting for years and have never seen this before. What a great way to use up small scraps! Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks! I find It very relaxing to work on and It does use up some of my scraps. Thanks for watching!! For tomorrow’s sew with me video I’ll be turning a strip of scraps into pumpkins.
put an old pillow case at the end of the sewing table for all the old bits of scrap material, when full, sew up the end and donate it to an animal shelter for a pet bed
That's a great idea, thanks!
I've been saving all my scraps to make pet beds for the shelters 💜🧡💛💚💙
This is a great idea thank you. Hugs Nola
I do this and it amazes me how quickly it fills up. I also use my thread and yarn bits in it.
I make 18" square pillows and stuff them with scraps left over from any sewing I do.
Wow! I am so impressed! I am a long time quilter who throws no scraps away. Now I have an easy solution to put all the scrap to good use. My grandmother was my sewing mentor. She was an expert crazy quilt maker. I have the one made for me by grandma and great grandma 50 years ago
What a treasure! I'm the first quilter in my family that I'm aware of so I'm the one starting the traditions. Thankfully my kids love handmade quilts. I have a hard time throwing away scraps too lol.
Robin -- thanks! You do a very good job of showing the whole process -- not too fast or too draggy, and the steps are very clear and complete!
Thank you so much. Happy sewing!!
Great, I am so glad I can now use the Scrap material that I have been saving. Love it.
I sew my string scraps onto strips of muslin. Since I frequently do these strips by hand, I find that the muslin holds the scraps in shape even though I bend and fold it while hand sewing. Paper tends to hold folds and crinkles more than the soft muslin does. I've done a number of small raffle quilts using the X in the middle pattern or Lattice for several quilts. It's nice to see some of the fabric I haven't haven't used recently come up out of my string scrap boxes. Thanks for posting the video. It's nice to see someone else's ideas about what to do with this small type of scraps.
Yes I can picture how crinkly and torn the paper would get while hand sewing. I love working through my scraps and finding bits from old projects. I’ve been having fun finding quick projects to use up my scraps. Thanks for watching!
Wow! You are wonderful! This is a grear "rainy day" project☔️‼️ you have such a soothing voice too. I love that you don't use annoying music in your videos and you are SEW creative! A million thanks!😊💕👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you, that is very kind of you to say. I'm with you about the music. I have a hard time following the video when there's music playing all the time. I'm working on my next scrap tutorial and it's another good one for a rainy day. I love rainy day sewing. Some days I just don't have the mental capacity for a project but I still want to sew and these typesof projects are perfect for those days.
RsIslandCrafts - Robin w
@ 11:55 I love that chili peppers fabric! 😍
It’s a fun fabric. I try to collect food fabrics when I come some scraps.
So awesome! Even if you are not using scraps, just sewing a planned piano key or slanted border, this is a great way to do it so you avoid the stretching that can happen. And you can roll it up easy for when it is time to use it later - makes it easier to use. Agree you are a great teacher. Subscribed and looking forward to more. Thanks.
Thanks Marcelle! That's very sweet. I get so many questions about why I would sew scraps to paper. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only crazy quilter out there lol.
Great idea. Thanks for sharing. Like you say, a good rainy day, I don’t want to think, kinda project.
Exactly. I think we all need an easy mindless project for those days.
4 years later! Been looking for a solution for my remaining scraps...thank you so much...THIS is it!!!!❤️❤️❤️
I’m so happy you found my video. I still enjoy sewing my scraps like this.
I love this! It's great to have a little side project in the works for when you want to do mindless sewing! Can't wait to see what you do with the strips!
Tanya Weiss I'm a big fan of mindless sewing. Sometimes I can work through a problem with a quilt while doing mindless scrap sewing. Thanks for stopping by!
Robin, what a great idea for sewing scraps that end up even for piecing and stored so great because they don't wrinkle after sewing and all set up for whatever you decide to make!!! I LOVE that you posted this video and thank you for tell me about it~~
Vicki Robles You’re welcome Vicki. Now you can go crazy sewing “scraps on a roll” with the rest of us! Someone left that in a comment and I really like It. Plus It describes It really well.
Great project! I can see the grandkids spending an hour doing this and feeling accomplished when done.
Yes! The kids can easily sew these strips and not worry about being "perfect". Even if they don't make anything from the strips they can hang them in their room.
A 3 year old video but I'm here and subbing too !! I've got baskets ... guess what I'll be doing for an hour every morning before my regular projects ?!!!!
Thank you for this "nifty" little idea.
Welcome!! Mindless sewing to start your day. Perfect. Happy sewing.
I recognize the blue tub, I have gotten mushrooms from the store in them. They are great and they are free.
Yes! They’re the perfect size for a few scraps or to hold small things.
Love it. I still have scraps from projects I made years ago ..loved the fabric so much could not throw it away!
I love seeing scraps from old projects. I just had a thought pop into my crazy brain. It might be fun to add a piece of fabric from each project during the year. Then at the end of the year you would have a long strip filled with memories from past projects. Too bad I am not that organized lol.
Thanks Robin. Safe journey through Irma!!
Its like paper piecing. Old ways. I learned from a lady how to use phone book paper. And made a quilt in red. So much fun
Laura Fifer Exactly! Everything comes around. I use phone books for my string blocks. We still get 3 or 4 phonebooks automatically delivered.
I love this!! I love being able to use every last scrap of every bit of material I have. I'm not much of a patchworker, though I can grumble through if needs be, but I think this is a fantastic reason for me to focus on improving, if only to use all those little bits that just feel too small to do anything with (and just are not right for doll clothes, lols), but too big to discard outright. I don't have adding machine tape, but I like the idea of using strips of paper cut from the back of all the half empty school books the kids bring home at the end of the year! Double save, yeah! And I love that the paper keeps the strips all neat and tidy and straight. Fantastic idea, I'm totally digging it.
I was going to say that those last little bit of scraps can be composted, but the comment below about the pet bed is fantastic, and is absolutely the way to use all the piddly little bits, I love it!
I also made a video on different things you can use in place of adding machine paper. Anything thin enough to sew through works great. I pull this project out when I want to sew but my brain isn’t working well enough for anything detailed. I’m not a big fan of patchwork especially if it’s matching seams and not cutting off points, etc. I just like to have fun. I will be coming back to this technique after the New Year. I’m going to be using It to make some pumpkins this
month too. Happy sewing!!
You know you can use old newspapers/ magazines to sew these strips on I mean you just need something that Will hold while sewing them together it doesnt need to be all one colour paper because you arent going to keep the paper on when you are gonna wash the fabric anyway or use old shopping resites
I really like this. I'm aiming for zero waste and this will help. Also it's nice to have something where I can just sit down and sew. Thank you!
eileenfb1948 Those are my favorite points. If I don't use the majority of a piece of fabric I feel like I'm wasting my family's money. Our hobby can be expensive so I like to save whenever I can. Plus it's fun.
I keep my scraps organized by size so when I want to do some mindless sewing I can grab that bin even if I only sew for 5-10 minutes.
Thanks for stopping by!!
I love your Vids and demos Robin!! got my roll ready and started the first few cut scraps!!! I love ideas where I can use up my scraps! I made some owl key chains and little mice and cut my tiny scraps to tiny bits and added them to some stuffing to fill them, I love to use every bit of scrap!!
Thanks Colette! You are a Scrap Queen! I love using up every bit of fabric too especially those special fabrics that we tend to hoard.
Great idea on how to keep the pieces straight. Thx 4 sharing.
What a great idea! Thank you so much for sharing!!!!
Your scrappy calculator tape strips can be alternated with plain fabric to make a coin quilt, almost makes itself if you sew scraps together from time to time. Thank you for the easy to understand video!
Yes! Lots of fun coin quilt options.
This idea is nothing short of brilliant. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!
Thank you. What a great idea! I have a lot of those rolls and I'm going to start sewing scraps but with the paper cut to a manageable one yard pieces. Thanks again!
MyChilepepper You're very welcome. Glad to have you join us on the "scrap" side lol. I'm sure I'll eventually be using strips of paper instead of the roll too. It's just fun right now to have one long strip ;)
Loved the hints.for sewing your scraps !!!!
Thanks Gina! I'm trying to make sure I include scrappy projects each month. Please see my playlists for more scrappy goodness.
What a wonderful Idea and tutorial 🤗
Thank you ❤
So simple and an excellent idea. Just ordered my adding machine tape. Thank you for the idea!
Awesome!! I’m hoping to show more ways to use the strips next year. Happy scrapping!!
Love this doing this will help me start making quilts
I've done this before, however I found it helpful to chain the roll to the base of the machine rather than keep it in a basket. It unrolls as you sew & it is easier to keep the seams straight. Thanks for sharing this.
Excellent tip!! Thank you!
I Love It....It"s Going to Be a Beautiful Quilt....Glad I Stumbled On This Video....I am a New Quilter And I will Try This Method....Thanks, Sheila❣
What a smart idea to use paper piecing! I received cool fabric from Ghana and now I will be able to save the tiny scraps this way as I make my main quilt.
J K I’m glad you found your way over here. You definitely don’t want to waste any of that cool fabric. I don’t save every small scrap of fabric but when it comes to a special fabric I just can’t throw any away.
Thanks for this. The paper roll I used was only 2 1/2” wide, so 1 3/4” sewn. I used 2 1/2” strips of background fabric. I think it will make a fun baby quilt-lots of bright colours to attract a child’s attention.
Sounds great! I now have three different widths of paper rolls 😂. I like the 2.5” strips for jelly roll type patterns and the wider ones for creative sewing. 😉
Great idea with adding machine tape!
You wouldn't believe this but I have five rolls of paper bought for a dollar at our recycling shop recently. I have been searching my mind for ways of using them, plus just this past week I have been sorting through a lovely stash of quilting scraps my sister gave me and trying to think of ways of using them...plus it's a rainy morning...guess what I am giing to be doing? I am not sure what I will do with them after but I note you are going to post (maybe already have, I didn't check the video date) about using yours so I will look out for that too...Thanks for sharing your process, your tutorial was clear and informative, Dixx
Dianne Ayers It’s like it was meant to be lol. I do have one video posted in the series showing you a couple ideas. I will also be posting a new video soon showing how I used some of my strips to make an envelope pillow for my son. Please subscribe to my channel so you’ll know when a new video is posted. I have several videos planned for how I use some of my scraps.
RsIslandCrafts - Robin Great minds...I already subscribed Robin! Don't want to miss a good thing ;)
Great idea. The smaller the thread count the easier to remove.
Great idea. You’re directions, along with the video, we’re easy to follow.
Andrea Johns Thanks Andrea!
absolutely a brilliant idea! I've been a tailor for over 20yrs...thats my income. my passion is art and clay and creating my own designs and cloth dolls and doll clothes and QUILTS! lol i design and made a Japanese quilt a couple yrs ago that had rows of triangles that got wonkie and had to be readjusted a few times...😕 this idea would have been awesome to have. Ty i got so many ideas in my head now.😌
Thanks! I’ve tried and tried but every time I make long stretches of rectangles or other shapes they always tend to bow or lean one way or the other. This way of sewing scraps has saved my sanity a time or two. I’m just starting to dabble with art quilts and I think it’s going to be a good medium for me because I love fabric, beads, shells, and other trims. With an art quilt I can put them all together. Thanks for hanging out with me in my craft room! I hope you stop by again.
Genius! Thank you for sharing your unique method of saving scraps!
Thank you 💜
What a wonderful idea , thank you Robin
Pat Miller Thanks for stopping by Pat!
Thank you....this is so neat. I just found some adding machine tape at Goodwill. I will check out your tutorial on how to use these strips.
Great find! I'm hoping to get back to my calculator strips in June.
Hello Robin, thank you for your reply 😁 that was very helpful to me has a total Beginner to Quilting 😁💕 Erica x
You’re very welcome. 🦩
very useful, thank you for your ideas, as well.
place the paper tape roll on a paper towel holder beside your machine!
That might work. I've started to just cut off a strip a foot or two long. Then if I still want the long strip I can sew each small strip together. Thanks!
@@rsislandcrafts That is what I have done, since keeping the roll ended in tangles of paper. X
Sandi James Keeping everything on the roll sounded and look so cool but the reality is that It just didn’t work. 🤷♀️
Or a thread spool holder that stands beside your machine. The kind used for cones of thread
Brilliant. I got a tape today and I am going to try this. Thank you for the tutorial.
Wonderful! I plan on showing more ways to use these strips this summer.
Brilliant. I’ve been recycling A4 waste paper but i love the roll for the little bits. Thanks for sharing the idea.
🦩
!!! THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL IDEA!! Thank you!
Love, love, LOVE this, thank you!!!
🦩
You had me at the Redskins fabric! Go Skins!
lol Hubby's a Giants fan but I needed this fabric for a customer. I do like the colors though.
Lovely idea... thank you for sharing!
Brenda Mason Thanks for stopping by! Have a wonderful week!!
Fantastic idea! Thanks!
Interesting concept.
This is a pretty neat idea, thank you for sharing.
Thank you Linda! I've been having fun trying to come up with projects to use these strips.
very smart idea! thank you!
Small trimmed pieces are things birds might love for their nests. I put mine in a suet cage and hang them in a tree. Yep, they find them! :)
I’ve tried both on the ground and using a suet cage and my birds just laughed at me 😂. They didn’t like my yarn scraps either 🤷♀️. Oh well, must be the type of birds we have.
Just discovered your site and was so pleased to do so. I love how creative you can be with all kinds of scraps…..sort of a Picasso fabric creation…and how the machine tape gives stability and keeps it all neat and tidy. Very nice. Thank you 💕Cathy in Montana.
Welcome to our little scrappy part of the world. I’m so glad you found us. Yes! Picasso fabric creation. I love that. I love when I trim the crazy scrappy calculator tape i just stitched and I end up with the clean and straight edges on my strips. I hope you find some other videos that you enjoy watching.
Such a creative idea! Thanks
Thank you Patti!
Great idea! Thanks.
Love this technique and your “don’t want to think seeing project’ I know exactly what you mean, looking forward to the follow video of how you use them. Thanks for sharing 😊👍
yvonne jenkins Thank you Yvonne! I’ve made a scrap fabric playlist that I’m adding videos to each week.

+Mary Giantonio Thanks Mary! In one of my recent videos I use these strips to make placements if you’re interested in seeing a project from these strips.
Love this idea!
Thanks! I'm having fun coming up with different uses for these strips. I hope you come back to see the projects I've chosen to make.
Just found your video! Love it! I have a whole bag of scraps and wasn't sure what to do with them. Thanks for the great idea!
Thanks! I find very relaxing and fun to just sew and sew and sew. I’ll be posting videos each month showing different projects that use these scrap strips.
.. Fantastic video, so glad I found it. Thank you and will be checking out more of your channel. Very clear direction too.😁
Thank you so much!! Next year I’ll be doing more projects using the scrappy strips.
This is brilliant!

Bravo to you! Keep up the good work!
Thanks Kathleen!
This is Great idea. Thanks for the help. I have been sitting scraps and wondered what you do with them. 😍
I love saving and playing with scraps. For me it allows freedom to play and be creative. Have fun!
I am learning a lot from these videos!
Sandra Lima Wonderful!! I hope you check out my other tutorials and subscribe if you like what you see. Next year I will be doing more videos using these scrappy strips.
This was a great video. I’ve got lots of scraps so I’m going to with this project. Thank you!!🙂
The scrappy strips are good for when I want to sew but have no interest in any of my projects. Great way to use up scraps too. Happy Scrappy Sewing!!
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Grreeeeeaaaat tutorial!
Thanks! I can’t wait to see what you do with your scraps.
Great idea! 😊
hi Robin, your an excellent teacher! I learned a lot. Thanks for the video
Shelly Thanks Shelly!! That's very sweet. I have a new video going up tonight if you want to see some of things I did with my scrap strips 😉 Have a great week!
Thank you so much. Great video. I've never thought of doing this but it's genius!
Diane Hawkins I'm not a precision quilter so this type of sewing works well for me. Plus, I love using up those bits of fabric that are normally thrown away. Thanks for stopping by!
What a good idea .!!! Thanks !!!
+Dora Camarena Thanks Dora! I’m using my red and blue strips to make placemats.
Good job! So encouraging. Great teacher! I like that you silenced the machine during stitching! I can do this.
Thank you. While I enjoy hearing my sewing machine sewing super fast I do not like hearing It at full volume. 🦩
This is such a cool idea! I am making a japanese quilt with a piano border and my pieces were getting wonkie to the point i put it away and havent been back to it...lol i saw your video and thought how cool! Now to find some of this paper. Then i was in salvation army having a look round and found 12 rolls of that paper in a bag your using for $2.00...jackpot!😁 now i can finish my japanese quilt and now i have ideas for my scraps. Ty
SCORE!! I'm happy to hear that I'm not the only one that has wonky piano key borders. It's so frustrating and like you already know, can cause us to put our projects up unfinished. I love hearing stories of people finding the paper rolls at thrift stores. Have fun!!
Very nice video
Sanjay Soni Thank you Sanjay!
Enjoyed watching the video.
Shirley J. Davis Thank you!
really great idea!! thank you!
+Claudia de Lucca Thank you!
Wow, what a great idea! Since I've only just begun on my sewing journey, I don't have a lot of scraps just yet, so I just have a small pile currently in a little bin. This is great, I'm gonna have to try this! Thanks for sharing, I'm enjoying your videos & learning a lot.
🦩. It won’t take long for you to have a large bin of scraps. They multiply when you close the sewing room door 😉
@@rsislandcrafts Haha it's starting to seem so!
Nice idea and I even have the paper rolls. Thanks
Thanks! Wonderful! I find it relaxing to just sew even if I store the strips and don't use them right away.
Thanks for sharing.
I like that idea. I make quilted bags, and sell them for charity. Now I will start a jam roll (jelly roll is already taken) with the bits. Thanks for the idea.
E.P. Lair I like the name "jam roll". Lol
What an amazing idea! 😃
Thank you. I think they’re fun to sew.
If you unroll the tape so that you are sewing on the inside of the roll, the curl off the roll can lay on the inside of the sewing machine. You could even thread a ribbon through the center of the roll and tie the ribbon, loosely around the machine, allowing the roll to reel off.
Thanks for the tip! Without thinking about it I think I may have done it your way the last time I stitched some red, white, and blue scraps. If I did, then you're right it was much easier. I did try using ribbon to hang it from my machine and it didn't work well at all for me. Maybe I need one of those metal toilet paper holders 😉
Love this idea,
It’s a very relaxing way to be creative without having to think too much. Plus, you use up scraps!
Wonderful idea for me I have lots of scraps just the size you are using
Perfect!!
