Follow your heart is all I can say. Never think it's about 'making it' or anything of that sort. Live revolves solely around finding your niche in this world.
15 years ago I was in the exact same situation. As a kid I sketched, painted and sculpted all day everyday but sometime during highschool (I guess is the equivalent) I stopped under the pressure of my teachers and parents. With the exception of my art teacher, all told me art wouldn't get me anywhere and that I should rather put my good grades to use. And so I listened, got a biology PhD and became a scientist and lecturer. Then, 3 years ago, I went into a period of intense depression and despair. I was on the verge of losing my wife and children. I vowed to never speak to my friends, family and siblings again as they never gave me the support I so desperately needed. I came close to ending things. But with the help of an incredibly professional therapist (who turned out to be an artist as well) we identified my shackled and forgotten artist heart screaming in despair as the root of all my suffering. I took the weeks off work that had accumulated over the years, locked myself in our garden shed and started painting like mad. I will never forget the moment I let my wife in for the first time: she burst into tears and said she never knew I was capable of producing such beautiful things. She gave me a long hug and vowed she would support me in anything I was going to do with my life. That was the simple little spark I needed. Immediately I gave notice to my employer I'd work part time from then on and informed him I'd not extend my contract, which runs out at the end of this years. Right now, we are looking for a smaller, more affordable flat with enough space for me to paint as my heart desires. And then let's see what happens from there. Anyhow, since all this took place my little 3 year old daughter developed an incredible interest for painting and art. Sometimes we spend all day in our garden shed and she paints while I watch her proudly and with the most intense feeling of joy I have ever felt. I've never had a better relationship to my wife and family. Life is good.
So, my advice would be to only ever listen to your heart. Money can't buy happiness.

I went to engineering school and graduated as an electrical engineer. Work was okay but I always felt handicapped in developing my artistic side. I fought it so hard that I even got injured physically and had to quit my engineering job right before I found out I had passed the licensure test. I met my wife while not working due to the injuries and I'm now a Math and Art teacher in the Philippines. I had to move from the USA here to be able to follow this career choice. I still haven't made it all the way but I'm much closer and happier than I have ever been in my adult life. Thanks for sharing, I can relate.

Once upon a time, there was a kid who loves to draw manga and sometimes will filled up her books with it. It was her first love and her books become part of her. One day, her family discovered her collection of drawings and said it'll never make a good living for her life then given her a more promising career in the future. She threw away the things she loves and try not to look back, the now grown girl choose the path given by her family and finally took the degree of their choice. She was trying to be happy with it, got stability and all that jazz but sometimes looking back at her lost love. Now, she's unhappy and regret the decisions she makes years ago. Two decades had gone and finally I realize I am that girl who lost her passion and now trying to get back before it's too late. Right now, I was learning back to basics (it was hard ngl and I am struggling) but for the first time I feel happiness. The book never left me, as it's embedded in my heart. Thanks for motivate me and now, I'm chasing my dreams...wish me luck guys. :)

A teacher told me this thing once, she told the 10 year-old me that I'll starve to death if I want to become an artist, so I stopped drawing for many years.
Now I'm almost 24 and decided to start learning properly and I want to make this my career, I love drawing, I came back to it time and time again over these years.
I'm really hoping I'll succeed, I think I have an eye for this as I've been making more progress than I was expecting and I can't believe what is coming out of my hands at times

Most socially driven people, especially young people, only follow what’s trendy. And trends change constantly. What else is social media than a place for riding trends? You’ll only wear yourself out just trying to keep up with that. Stop treating your art as a social flex and enjoy your own personal process instead. The more you do that the more comfortable you are in raising the bar with it. The only ones who truly support you with that are legit curious about the craft beyond trends and also care about your improvement by providing actually constructive criticism. Don’t count on the common public to provide that kind of support outside of oooohs and aaaahs.

I feel this, Im currently trying to get an apprenticeship in the design field and it feels just impossible to get into anything. It is already a second plan since becoming an concept artist is even more difficult where I life because of all the expenses for the schools you have to pay and you cant get finacial support for it since they are private. I´ve been thinking about just giving up on ever doing anything with art but its just so difficult because I love creating Characters and stories so much. But finally getting there? I dont know if I ever will. I do hope that the Lady you talk about and everybody here in the comment section find their way to make their passion their job.

Left all behind and went full force to drawing. After 3 years just now I'm starting to be able to live doing art. Had to sacrifice a lot and maybe other person would have stayed in the job and have art as a hobby, but to me is kind of an obsession, so I live like I have no choice.

_It was both saddening to hear both sides, as I can relate that kind of opinion that art, to the pragmatic, is "just a hobby", and the fact that you are truly passionate, yet held down by peers or even those you love dear._
*_The only thing that was sad for me is that only few in my personal circles know my passion for art. How I got into it is stemmed from a simple obsession with cartoons to anime. Then I started admiring stories and art, even from books. However, not everyone will really agree to that passion, thinking that "it will get me nowhere"._*
*_I don't care. I don't care of the doubt, I give them only the benefit of the doubt. But I continue pursuing both digital arts and music as both as passion and career. Balancing them with game development too is a thick challenge. The only thing that keeps me still persisting is the support from that one person in my personal circle, who believes I can go beyond with my work. By emotional means, art can express the real me, the weirdness I have, and the so-called "immature" personality of mine that makes people also vibe the same craziness._*
*_Many friends on the internet do insist me to keep pursuing that, even if one day they will change (I tune in to many artists, by the way). Sometimes being an artist isn't all about just portraying others and putting color. True artists express themselves to their heart and soul's content, while doing the work of others. I still use my craziness to keep pushing on in life, even to the point I can reach my dream career and begin my path of inspiration._*
*_Inspiration, is the true goal I reach to for the sake of many, many, artists like myself, young minds to bring color. After all, the more they can paint this world with their own (Blended, or respecting boundaries), the more colorful humanity will live. That colorful life, is what I pursue for myself and for others who wish that path, and nothing will stop me, or anyone else, doing that._*
*_If you read this message from me, a simple girl doing complex things alone, know you have great worth, no matter your passion. If art runs in your blood, go for it. Become wild, free, and above all..._*
*_Be yourself. Always. Stay true to your dreams and desires. Even if this world falls apart one day, keep pursuing what you love, both heart and soul._*

I'm actually from a family of creatives. even my grandpa used to paint. So I'm getting a lot of support from everyone around me when it comes to art. My actual problem is that I don't support myself. I often see myself doubting my choices in life and it just ends up with me hating my passion. But I still sit down every day to draw and paint.
Just listening to this made me realize that art for me isn't actually about having a carreer in it or having people love my art etc. It's a way for me to escape, relax and express myself. I basically draw my emotions instead of talking about them. That's why I go back to it everyday. It's my way to talk about my emotions without talking about them. I just love the process of creating and your videos reminded me of that. Thank you!

I love your balanced approach to pursuing an art career. I wish I had mentors like you earlier in my life. I had stopped drawing for about 20 years before I picked up a pencil again. Because important people in my life said I couldn't earn a living in art. After a death in my family, my divorce and a serious assessment of myself, I'm now painting, digitally illustrating and am actively involved in upskilling my art skills. You die if you ignore your heart-speak, but you also stand the risk of death if you ignore your head-speak. I'm approaching 50 and feel alive... sure, am sh*tting myself at times, but alive.

Artistry is everywhere. This is what made me able to tolerate, and really start to love my pedestrian accounting education and pursuits. The knowledge that change and beauty and wonderful people and ideas are just below the surface of the accountants technicality; it’s right there to grab. It doesnt matter if other accounting types don’t understand, I decided to refuse to lose that edge.
That said, massive respect to the fine arts folks who don’t have the little leaf of stability an Accounting or CompSci degree might hold

To be honest, I don't like to hear about a need of "feeling a spark" when searching for your passion. Since I was a kid, I wanted to make games. I got into programming, which I do for 11 years now, and I've never felt that spark. Of course there were lot of excitement, when I completed creating a game, but that's mostly it. I really do like programming, even if I moved from making games to making software. Does not feeling that spark will automatically mean it's not my passion?
I think that if it's something you would do, even if noone would pay you for it, or you would have "infinity" of money so you don't need to make them anymore, that is something you really want to do.

    • @paprika2736
      @paprika2736 2 года назад +4

Same for me, but with drawing and writing stories. I think in our cases the "spark" was already there, in our childhood. When we didn't recognize it as what it is and we hadn't to "look for it" like others have to in their further lifes. At least, that's what I say when asked "when did I start drawing and forming stories": I never stopped as a child - neither with the pencils in my hand nor with all the fantasies, dreams and ideas in my head.
That's why I think, if there's something like "a spark for a passion", then I just can't remember when it hit me. Like I can't remember my first step or first word and so on. Hope that makes sense. 😅

This whole time I felt so understood. I do have people who support my art and my passion, but my grandfather does not. He is the only artist in my family who had the same passion when he was younger, but due to outside circumstances he could not pursue it and I feel like he still holds a grudge because of that and puts it out on me. Maybe he is telling me to stop and find another career path, because he sees himself in me. His past self.
But my love for art is too strong to give my grandpa the power to put me down and I'm certain I will be able to make something out of myself. I work on it every day and hopefully I can show him my achievements one day! :)

Hi again Adam! Timely video as usuaL, I don't know how you do it but your videos always come at the exact moment I need them. This video has really put my life in persepctive and made me realise how lucky I really am. My family all support my art (even if sometimes, they don't quite understand certain things) and I work a part time job which allows me the time to create and pay bills. This year has been very challenging for certain reasons and I feel like I'm letting people down when I haven't felt the motivation/urge to create, but I realise that sometimes patience and temperence are key to success.
My main battle is procastination related, as in, having too many ideas. It sounds bad, but put it this way, I have a book of ideas, and as soon as I start work on one of them, the others become much more appealing so I stop! It is a real pain in arse, but you are right-I have to focus on the purpose and outcomes I seek from the projects I create. I recall the success I had recently when I just focussed on one thing and saw it through to the end, which in my case, was a book on local folklore and ghost stories that I wrote and illustrated as well as published. I occassionally get messages from people who have read the text and want to thank me for writing it, and in those moments I realise- yes, THIS is what I want to do for my career.
I am lucky to be where I am, and must balance the practical with the aspirational, because that is where success lies.
Sorry for the long message, but thanks again Adam! I wish I could afford a mentorship at the moment, but hopefully soon!

TMI but that's where I am right now. I'm slightly older (30s) and I come from a culture/subculture where my passion was/is dismissed. People acknowledge that I'm talented but a lot of people around me (family/friends) either don't care or don't want to see me succeed. And since I don't have any resources/guidance growing up it's hard to stay on track, no one told me how to navigate living in this world, unlike a lot of (successful) people. By all accounts I should have given up and kept my full time job at a warehouse, but it felt wrong and I know I have something to give the art community/industry. It's pretty painful right now, living paycheck to paycheck, studying by myself, no other passionate people or artists to share my journey with.. but I have to try. Any other path seems wrong. Everyone just talking about passion and I (and I´m sure a lot of other people) sitting here feeling kinda meh on a whole range subjects. This comment is kinda the flipside of this talk.
Lots of people have no clue what they really need to pursue, what direction to steer their life into. yet I still sit here and listen to your talks, though.
Don't ever forget how lucky you are Mr Duff, and all the other people in here who've found their passion. Some people never get to feel this ''true love'' about a subject that you're talking about. Some people have to do with mere glowing embers rather than raging fires. And you cannot forge a sword with a glowing ember.

Thank you so much for this video. I have been thru this as well and it hurts so much when someone destroyed your passion. I had so many filled sketchbooks as a kid. There wasn't a single page that was empty. But my family one day decided to trou everything away because it's too childish and that I should stop drawing. ( I was mostly drawing Anime at that time, but I also drew my own characters, victorian era clothes, and so on... ). So yeah all of my past sketchbooks are gone and all I have are some memories of what I drew in them. And over the years I was trying to get back at drawing but I just didn't have any ideas of what to draw. Then I start and stop for two years and I start again and stop. And that has been going on for years. But now I'm using RUclips as my Journal in improving and getting back to drawing and to get back that ''Zing'' that you feel when you make art. I'm at square one but I know I will improve.
Thank you again for the video and your art is fantastic.

hi Adam, tnx upload again;) , I am not painting to start a career, i just liked painting since ever, i dont really have a goal, sketching with pencils and pens on normal paper is faster for me, because i lose a lot of time on figuring out the software and pensettings,,(GIMP and Wacom Pro Medium), to me it is sort of therapeutic and really the challenge mastering the options in the program, which makes progress every time i try, I get a lot of inspiration on this channel and thank you for that. Hello Adam, long time viewer here, your videos have helped me a lot in the past and I am interested in your opinion on the topic I'm about to write about. Even if you don't read this, I am still interested in fellow commenters' opinions, too.
I was always interested in art be it drawing, painting, music, crafts etc. However when picking something up I didn't have the willpower to continue pursuing the activity. Recently I started doing 3D art and I have been enjoying it a great lot. It finally feels that it's something I can continue to do. It's fun, intuitive and the learning process feels rewarding. Because of this I have encountered a new problem - whenever I see art online, 2D art specifically, I get the feeling that 3D art is inferior to it and that kind of makes me not want to do it. I feel as though as I am somehow "cheating" the system, how whenever I see stunning landscapes and charming character models made in 3D it feels wrong, compared to how inspired I feel by 2D art of landscapes and characters.
And I know that this belief is not true since, especially in recent years, 3D art is used a lot and it's basically the end of the pipeline in videogames production - a medium I enjoy a lot. I am at a loss because on one had I have finally found something in art I enjoy very much, on the other hand there are those thoughts at the back of my mind: "you'd better do 2D art instead, it's better, it's correct". The problem isn't even the thoughts themselves, it's how I don't know how to deal with them since I have never encountered anything like this before.

My parents allowed my husband and me to live at their place until I can earn money with my art - I am 30 and don't think every parent would do that yor their child. But besides my husband nobody really supports me emotionally. If I did not have him I don't know if I could have continued this.I can't express how thankful I am to have him be with me.

There are also dysfunctional ways to wreck your life and hurt lots of other people out of a sense of helplessness. If at all possible, please try to do the former. Reach out to random internet strangers for help if you need to. If you have any chance at all to take scary risks to create a new life, instead of falling into self-destructive behavior to force change, then please do that. Hi Adam! I'm not sure if this makes sense or if i can articulate it well enough as this is something i just thought about, but i was wondering if you'd be interested in discussing a topic in one of your art talk videos. Namely, the topic of how complete the art has to be for certain purposes and how to realistically determine that by yourself.
I've had problems knowing when my artwork would be worth publishing with the intention of selling it, or maybe to fill in to my portfolio. Something more than "just sharing a picture". I've been too hang up on mastering my skills to perfection therefore, but i think there are different levels for different purposes. For example, children's books are not hyper realistic. I think that in those you'd need to have a more of a skill to express emotions than to be perfect in technical skill. They don't necessarily need to be either polished to the extreme, long as it doesn't look just like a quick sketch (unless maybe the artstyle would be that for some reason).
In a sense no artwork is unworthy of sharing, but certain artstyles, workplace roles, mediums of expression etc, i think have a standard that needs to be met in order for it to be marketable or acceptable in a professional sense. I understand that it can be close to impossible to define it in some cases (like simply selling your paintings in your own style; that can be basically whatever), but some occupations, like doing book covers, video game art, environmental art, concept art, illustration, and whatever other venues, there are some requirements that one needs to be skillful enough to fulfill. They of course vary in different artstyles and jobs.
I guess at least partly i am asking, how do i know i am good enough for certain job, whether freelance or normal job? It'd be nice to know if there was a way to earn money with art, even if i wouldn't be at my goals yet, which i guess is the ultimate standard i am aiming at.
I guess i also would like to know when i'm really ready to use my skills to produce something and not just share it. I guess this might also have something to do with self esteem and figuring out what do i want to express, in what form (comic books or games for example) and in which role (concept art or creating the final polished picture or animation). Is it just by long time experimenting and having the courage to apply or to create that thing? It can't be that simple yet hard solution :P
I hope this didn't get too incoherent or anything :D

No one needs to agree with me about this but the only people that get a chance in anything in their field of dreams are blue eyed, blonde, thin people that get rewarded for their hard work. *Equal hard work does not apply equal rewards.* Every time that happens it's a punch down on you as a person and then everyone says get up and try again.
