I'm watching from Washington State. I think most people who live here would be surprised to hear that the banh mi was considered in any way to be the best or most popular sandwich. I wouldn't be surprised if many people outside of the Seattle metro area have never even heard of it before.
There isn't a "large" Vietnamese population here, nowhere near as large as California or parts of Texas.

Tri cities native, I can't think of anything in southeastern Washington that's really distinctive, maybe those fancy folks up in Spokane had something :P That being said, there was a Vietnamese restaurant in Kennewick, never had their Banh Mi, but duck soup was good. And I do seem to recall a story in the Tri City Herald that the gentleman that owned/owns? the Mongolian grill was some kind of high rank in the south Vietnamese army.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a sandwich is two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between. By definition all burgers, hot dogs and tacos (tortillas are a flatbread) are all sandwiches. If you want to throw open faced sandwiches into the ring you can suddenly include things like chicken & waffles, pizza, tostadas and so much more. Sandwich is an EXTREMELY vague term.

That's not really a state sandwich though. I only had that once and it was just OK.
Much better, and most of the people in PA have had this, is a hot po boy. You get hot Italian sausage (bratwurst sized links) and you stew it with tomatoes, bell peppers, and onions. You have to stew them for at least 4 hours for that magical flavor to impart. They're awesome and served at parties, family reunions, whatever.

2nd gen Californian here (& I am old).
    In'n'Out is ICONIC.
    Meat is never frozen.
Lettuce, tomatoes & onions are all very fresh.
And, can order it for your preference. E.g. I always got my onions grilled.
    Buns are always very fresh.
French fries fresh are made fresh. The whole potatoes are scrubbed, peeled, cut into shape of the fries.
    Then friied.
Oil always fresh, never tastes stale.
I always ordered fries well done. Also, they are super salty, so most people add salt.
    Onions rings are amazing.
Milk shakes are NOT huge -- only 1 size.
Made with actual ice cream (unusual for fast food).
    Also, secret menu.
Anything can be ordered animal style.
    Delicious.
    Google it.
Anyway, I don't any of the above anymore.
Strict cardiologist, & I hope to make it to 70. Maybe even 75.
    Blessings, André.

We pulled over and asked for some Cuban sandwiches and they were all out. They offered us some other weird thing instead.
I said, Your business is called The Cuban Sandwich! You're not allowed to be out of them.
      We kept going.

I hesitated to try the Lays Cuban Sandwich potato chips last year because I feared it might be spicy (like most Hispanic food), & my mouth is VERY SENSITIVE to spicy food. However, when I finally tried them, I LOVED them! If these chips are ANYTHING like an actual Cuban sandwich, I assume I will have the same reaction.

    • @protorhinocerator142
      @protorhinocerator142 8 дней назад

@@augiegirl1 They're kinda close. The Cuban sandwich is more savory than spicy. About the spiciest things on the CS is the pickles and the bold mustard.
The CS is pretty safe for spice wimps. Give it a try. I think you'll enjoy.
I made one at the house for my wife a few years ago. I got some Hormel pork roast au jus, some fresh ham, and all the other regular ingredients. She said it was the best CS she ever had. I was just throwing things together.
For the pickle I'd like to suggest the Claussen kosher dill sandwich slices. Vlasic pickles have better flavor but they're limp. Claussen is crunchier but generally bland. The sandwich slices are thin with more surface area so they taste better and have a really good crunch. Overall best pickle.
It's the only pickle I buy anymore.

there was an actual court case where it was ruled that a hotdog IS a sandwich....
also every meat between two bread pieces (sliced or bun or split roll) IS a sandwich, and you can call it a sandwich, EXCEPT for a hamburger.. since it SPECIFICALLY is called a 'hamburger sandwich' (and we just drop the 'sandwich' part of the name) when you cook ground beef patties and serve it between two pieces of bread, because that is what it was named when it was created and sold originally... thus you can't call any other meat and bread a 'hamburger' but must call them sandwiches only... thus you can't have a 'chicken burger' or 'pork burger'. so all them are simply called sandwiches...

Born in Massachusetts, so the fluffernutter sandwich brings back all sorts of nostalgia.
Currently residing on the West Coast and it feels like they include California's In-N-out burger as a 'sandwich' for no other reason than they can name-drop the popular chain. I would have California's sandwich be the Banh Mi due to the large Vietnamese communities in Orange and San Diego counties (I'm not sure what sandwich would represent Washington state). Also, with prices on the increase everywhere, it seems like a savory, meaty banh mi at a Vietnamese restaurant, bakery or sandwich shop is one of the last places a working class stiff could get a hearty, savory, meaty and filling sandwich for less than $10.
Other sandwiches I've had on this list include Lobster Roll, Cubano, Philly Cheesesteak, Pork Tenderloin, Brisket, Patty Melt, Po' Boy and the Juicy Lucy.

Louisiana Poboy sandwiches can be anything you want. Some local shops have grilled seafood (shrimp or fish), fried seafood, ham, turkey, chicken, beef, and or pork. Toppings can also be custom ordered to include coleslaw, pickles, tomatoes, shredded lettuce, mayonnaise, mustard, and or ketchup. The more messy the sandwich, the more delicious they are. Some even have hamburger patties, grilled sausage, or crawfish.

Venison is a common meat ,especially in Alaska. Most is harvested by private hunters and processed by a butcher for home use but restaurants may have it. The California sandwich is not some garbage burger from a chain. Probably a tri tip sandwich.I live in Kentucky, a hot brown is basically a fancy restaurant sandwich but that was correct, it was invented here. New York would be pastrami. Brisket is best chopped and sauced for a sandwich, that is the commonest way to order a brisket sandwich although sliced does exist. Chicken is probably the most consumed meat in the US but ground beef in the form of various recipes is a home cooking staple.

@coollady2179 Elvis's favorite sandwich was a peanut butter, jelly, and fried banana. He may have flown out to Denver to get this sandwich once, but that doesn't make it the state's favorite sandwich.

  • @thseed7

Currently live in Denver, Colorado. The Elvis sandwich is ridiculous and I doubt many people order it outside of the novelty of eating what "the King" ate. Lived in Texas (brisket is perfect, bread on the side), Oklahoma (not sure if I agree that Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich is the State sandwich this time), Kansas (BBQ is fair), Nebraska (Runza for sure), Missouri (BBQ still fair), Iowa (Maid-Rite yup), Indiana (Pork Fritter Sandwich), Louisiana (Oyster or Shrimp Po' Boy are great), New York (Bagel and Lox with Cream Cheese, Capers and Pickled Red Onions is phenomenal, but not the State sandwich. Definitely an Italian Sub with Mortadella, Pepperoni, Capicola, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Burrata, Oregano, Oil, Vinegar, Calabrian Chilis and Olives recommended) and New Jersey (Taylor Ham, Egg and Cheese on an Everything Bagel or Kaiser Roll is still the best breakfast sandwich ever devised by human beings) with family in Illinois (Portillo's and Al's Italian Beef, get it dipped, extra giard), Pennsylvania (Philly Cheese Steak with Onions, Whiz and Provolone), Massachusetts (would actually put lobster rolls here too) and Florida (Cuban Sandwiches are basically perfect Mojo Pork, Ham, Swiss, Dill Pickles and Mustard grilled in a Panini press is pure magic) and went to college in Maryland (Pit Beef is probably more accurate in my opinion). The North East and Midwest sandwich game crushes almost everything the South has to offer in sandwiches. Virginia's Smithfield Country Ham is the only sandwich that is too salty.

Although I now live in Oregon, (Grilled Cheese), I grew up in West Virginia, (Pepperoni Rolls), and prefer them. My mom made the best ones you ever tasted.
We took them to school for lunch. My dad took them for his lunch.
A great simple food that hits all the comfort spots.
If you get a Grilled Cheese sandwich with any other cheese then Tillamook, you are missing out. Tillamook has a unique flavor, maybe because it overlooks the Pacific Ocean, maybe it's cows are pampered?
    Great cheese, any flavor.
And don't forget Tillamook ice cream for dessert.

In and Out burger is indeed VERY popular here in the state of California. But, personally, I don't eat much red meat. My favorite fast food is actually Subway sandwiches! Which I believe can be found in Portugal also! They were founded in the state of Connecticut, though, so not an example from California. 🙂
I would say....mmm...for chains that come from California, I would say I am torn between Erik's Delicafe and Togo's (pronounced "toe-goes"). 🙂
From Erik's -- founded in Scotts Valley, near Santa Cruz (world famous surfing town) -- I will typically get a Rio Grande, which is "Turkey breast, hickory smoked bacon, pepper jack cheese, avocado, tomato, lettuce and Secret Goo on toasted ciabatta", although I tell them to hold the secret goo and replace it with mustard. 🙂
From Togos -- created here in San Jose, largest city in "Silicon Valley" -- I get a number 24, which is "1/4 lb. of whole breast turkey & fresh avocados. Served TOGO’S Style". Togo's style means "Lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, sliced pepperoncini, salt and pepper", so I usually ask for a 24 with no onions, and add mustard to it. 🙂 1/4 pound = 0.11 kg. 🙂

Andre, the place where I first heard the term fry bread was on Arizona's Navajo Res./Nation.
If my memory serves me correctly, the only place where In and Out is popular is CA, since that's the only state that has them.
The CO offering is just plain ridiculous. How can that state be the country's most fit when they eat an 8000 calorie sandwich, and are proud of it, yet???
Since she's repeatedly pronouncing "smear" as "shmear", she has to be from NY.😀
    Cuban sandwiches are really good.
HI's kalua pig is what's served at luaus.
I live in Illinois about 1.5 hrs, drive NW of Chicago, but my favorite so far is the already mentioned Cuban sandwich.
Patty melts are available all across the country, and are sooo good.
New York's choice had an ingredient called smoked salmon, which most often goes by the Yiddish term 'laks', but has gotten Anglicized to 'lox', and served in 100% of NYC's Jewish delicatessens.

Andre, all of those sandwiches are sooooo good! The Philly Cheese Steak is even better than it looks, and so is the Pastrami. Of course, most of those are served in most places across America, and each state takes extra pride in their own....but, taking one states favorite, and make it somewhere else, you get a new version. Tennessee tacos are different than in California; not as good, but delicious in their own way. Even in California, you have probably 25 different ways to make tacos, and 5 different meats, cooked many ways each themselves.🌮🍔
