    The hardest part of surviving on Io would probably be the daily dose of 36000 mSv of radiation (enough to kill you in just a few days)

      Doesn't help being in Jupiter's orbit. Jupiter has IMMENSE radiation that spans it's neighbouring moons.

      @@JynxedKoma On Callisto you'd get 0.1 mSv/day of radiation which is 7x less than Mars, if humas were to visit a Galilean moon it would be Callisto

    As soon as you said we were jumping into a volcano, my first thought was, "Awww... I wanted to see the horrorscape that is the surface..." Not only did the dive exceed my wildest expectations of haunting beauty, but you brought us back up to see the rest. Thank you.

      Well, space in overwhelming majority is just that -- empty space. Actual objects are few and really far between.

      The average distance between objects in the asteroid belt is 600,000 miles. For context, the diameter of the Earth is just under 8,000 miles.

    If you wonder, the heat is generated by the tidal forces from the attraction of Jupiter.

      The other moons (Ganymede and Europa) also pull on Io. They are locked in a 4:2:1 orbital resonance, in which Europa completes 1 orbit for every 2 orbits of Io, and Ganymede completes 1 orbit for every 4 of Io. This is how volcanism happens on Io.

    it sure be awesome to fall into jupiter's night side in the auroara zone. see aurora while going down, see lightening flashing below you even before you enter the upper clouds. and later on see the heat glow when things get really hot.
