“Bell Tonal” was commissioned in 2018 by a consortium of 17 bass trombonists that included Denson Paul Pollard. The two movement composition was originally written for bass trombone and piano, but can also be performed with bass, vibraphone, and auxiliary percussion. The first movement is a rhythmic cantabile featuring many ornamentations accentuating the melodic lines. The second movement is fiery and energetic, with virtuosic solo lines and constant action that highlight the power of the low register on the bass trombone.
