I'm also from Wigan & just opposite The Tesco extra near the river douglas on the way up wigan lane is A memorial Plaque on A wall for George Formby. The house he was born in still stands today In Hindley!!
I was on a river cruise in Norfolk and we went past George's old house at the riverbank. Still just like it was when he lived there, untouched but cared for. Just like a mausoleum but lovely still. RIP George Formby...all my family loved you.
A lovely informative video, what a sad contrast between George’s grave and that of the one next to it which is collapsing into the ground. It’s always a shame to see memorials destroyed by the passage of time.
One of my earliest memories, (i'm 80) is the war years, when my family played their collection of George's cheerful records. My favourite was / is, 'Cleaning Windows'. on the famous REGAL ZONAPHONE, RED & GOLD label.
George had a house on Maines lane Singleton. This is near Shard Bridge heading towards Hambleton. Apparently Georges wife was a complete nag . Yet another great video Thanks very much .
This song came to my head…..… You've heard about my capers when windows I've to clean Now I'd like to tell you of a few more things I've seen … I've seen Miss Thompson in her flat take off her shoes, her coat and hat I've seen her take off more than that, when I'm cleaning windows At a ladies school I call, and one girl flirts with me and all But I'm insured in case I fall, when I'm cleaning windows … All day up this ladder I'm as busy as can be It's not my fault I see a lot of things I shouldn't see … To overcrowded flats I've been, sixteen in one bed I've seen With a lodger tucked up in between, when I'm cleaning windows Old soldiers never die they say, now I don't want to pass away I kick the bucket every day when I'm cleaning windows Through working at such dizzy heights, I dream about my job at night I polish my wife's thingummy tights, and think I'm cleaning windows … All day up this ladder I'm as busy as can be It's not my fault I see a lot of things I shouldn't see … The newlyweds at number six, somehow the curtains they can't fix They play some lovely parlor tricks, when I'm cleaning windows Now lots of girls I've had to jilt, for they admire the way I'm built It's a good job I don't wear a kilt, when I'm cleaning windows At the coronation I'll commence to work where crowds are very dense And let me stand for eighteen pence, instead of cleaning windows … And all day up this ladder I'm as busy as can be It's not my fault I see a lot of things I shouldn't see … At eight o'clock a girl she wakes, at five past eight a bath she takes At ten past eight (hm) my ladder breaks, when I'm cleaning windows Source: LyricFind
Rest in peace George….,I'm leaning on a lamp, maybe you think I look a tramp, Or you may think I'm hanging round to steal a car. But no, I'm not a crook, and if you think that's what I look, I'll tell you why I'm here and what my motives are. I'm leaning on a lamppost at the corner of the street In case a certain little lady comes by, Oh me, oh my, I hope the little lady comes by. I don't know if she'll get away, she doesn't always get away, But anyhow I know that she'll try, Oh me, oh my, I hope that little lady comes by. There's no other girl I would wait for, But this one I'd break any date for, I won't have to ask what she's late for. She wouldn't leave me flat, she's not a girl like that. Oh she's absolutely wonderful and marvelous and beautiful And anyone can understand why, I'm leaning on a lamppost at the corner of the street, In case a certain little lady passes by. I'm leaning on a lamppost at the corner of the street In case a certain little lady comes by, Oh me, oh my, I hope the little lady comes by. I don't know if she'll get away, she doesn't always get away, But anyhow I know that she'll try, Oh me, oh my, I hope the little lady goes wadda dadda da de bom bom. There's no other girl I could wait for, But this one I'd break any date for, I won't have to ask what she's late for. She wouldn't leave me flat, she's not a girl like that. That's a common sight in older well established cemetary's; especially when family links have long gone.
