This is truly one of my all time favorite WW2 movies ever When Trumpets Fade the battle of the Hurtgen Forrest on which I own with a lot of great other's on DVD and Blurey!👌.
The battle took place between mid-September 1944 and mid-February 1945, the Hurtgen forest is located in Germany near the Belgian border, not exactly places known for a pleasant climate in autumn-winter; However, that winter was milder than usual, but the weather conditions shown in the film are realistic.
I don't think "Saving Private Ryan" is truer and more realistic than this film. That American military idiocy in the Hurtgen Forest - for which Eisenhower is responsible - somehow failed to interest Spielberg. Too few opportunities for mawkish happyends and kitschy trumpet "patriotic" melodies.
