Did you know that 12 years ago, on September 26th The Weeknd discovered Lana Del Rey through tumblr, and was the first one to ask BBC Radio 1 to put 'Video Games' on their playlist. In fact in an interview Abel admits that when he met Lana, he felt that he had found the girl who was writing in her songs, that is, I found her muse for her songs. Perhaps this revelation puts into context not only the collaborations between these two but their respective catalogs as well. her saying “out of the black into the blue” in get free, is supposed to mean that while she is now trying to change, be more positive and “get free”, it’ll be a process that takes time. so yes blue technically is still considered a sad color, but it’s less sad and more optimistic than black. the end of the song is also supposed to foreshadow her next album: norman f* rockwell. it’s kind of a beachy californian psychedelic themed album, hence the beach sounds at the end of the song.
55:19 - the empty spaces in Get Free she replaces with names to pay tribute to in live performances - generally "for Amy (Winehouse) and for Whitney (Houston)?" - it also transitions very well into NFR next !!
The reason you understood the “my boyfriend’s back, and he’s cooler than ever” line is not only because someone commented on your vlog, but also because in Brooklyn Baby! She says “my boyfriend’s pretty cool, but he’s not as cool as me” in the bridge. This song, made after that song, kinda plays in that!
