When I read the title of the video and tought "Oh no, Hera is retiring 😭" Hahahahah
* Quickly reading the comments to make sure Hera is not retiring *
@@Chraan same here
My heart stopped for a second lol 😂
Legit same, I was like what, no! this cant be. Anyways this video is great reminder that we as AoE2 players of 2024 have so much to be thankful for. Thanks Hera for reminding us.
Hera going out on top 11 😂
Voobly deserves way more recognition than they get. They literally saved the AOE2 scene after the death of the zone. I myself played on voobly when i came back after not playing since 2000. Then everyone just abandoned voobly when HD and DE came out.
Yeah and the weird part is that the zone/voobly lobby system is way more user-friendly than this piece of crap in DE. So really don't know why people left voobly for that.
they still put up vids of games on their youtube channel
@@JP050 DE UX designers are very poorly skilled. Alas.
@@JP050 I think that is because is a bit annoying have to install a 3rd party tool to play even more when you can just play in the official game, that the advantages don't look too big.
The voobly contact support guys used to help me download the game and make it work on my crapping old pc that probably couldn't even handle it (it was that crap 11)
But they still put in all that effort every single time any issues came up and happily support me all for free and I'm pretty sure they were just volunteers aswell
That support and community I will forever be grestful for
Small steamers. They don't make alot of money but they provide a niche which keeps the community together.
100%
I have so many fond memories of this game from over the years. I’ve been playing it since I was five. For context, I’m 27 now and I’m never sick of it.
when we played LAN games back in 2000/2001 it took about 3-5 hours to find a winner.
True lol
I don't understand can someone explain?
@@izyanjamal7717 LAN games (no online, hosting lobbies when playing on same internet) were more popular back in the day and games were longer to finish because they were new to the game
I really miss the long games of the time back then. Just clashing massive armies without really gaining or loosing ground powered by a massive trade route filled with mule carts.
We would play so slow back then 😂
Beyond the popular known ones you mentioned, here is my list of unsung heroes (off the top of my head): HappyLeaves, Scripter, Chrazini, Resonance22, BBQTurkman, Robo, Taff, Masmorra, Genette, KKab, Paladin, PKZ, Lidakor, Pumukel, The_Prophet, Simonsan and all the liquipedia editors
Oh yeah I used to watch Resonance22 a lot, him and ZeroEmpires got me into the competitive side of the game as I was mostly just playing single player back then. Kinda sad Resonance22 left right before the game blew up again but he did his part :)
Isn't pkz viper's dad
@@afz902k Resonance 22 got burned out from all the added content of Aoe2. He plays pokemon last time I checked his twitch.
Yeah pkz is viper's dad that is correct.
The Chris-Daut and Viper-Jordan rivalries made so much for the game, by keeping things alive, create build orders from scratch, etc. Also, BBQ turkman was such a good caster, not sure what happened with him
T90 got me back in this game. So grateful for him.
Nah t90 is a w⚓️
SOTL for me, I haven't played the game in like 20 years and weird YT algo rec to me and I'm like WOW! there's still people playing?
@@xRoshtack Same. SotL brought me back.
@@austin33785 11, why?
T90's true gift is that he highlights the fun in the game while also being tryhard super-analytic when he needs to be. His community and their games, and his laugh...
at 50 we will all be watching senior AoE compatitve gameplay, 20 years old, onto the next 20 years we go
Two years ago my sister made fun of me for nerding out on this game as a child. I thought, “oh yeah, I remember that. I really loved that game.” So I bought it. Downloaded it. And now I nerd out on it as an adult.
I'm confused
@@squadwiper79 what is confusing? Is it that my sister made fun of me and I decided to lean into it? You don’t have to let people’s insults bring you down man
Im happy to be part of the community. Especially discovering your channel.
its not a big community like the other games i played. But very wholesome.
If it's a small community and streamers are quitting then it is entirely due to branding and marketing. And now since it is Microsoft's ball, it is up to them to branding it for instance as " the most intelligent game for only the higher IQ people" --- they don't do enough, when there is so much scope for it!!
Love this acknowledgement. I am proud for my part in inventing Forest Nothing 😎. I have so many memories over the years, from MSN Zone to Voobly. I am low af ELO and never tried to play competitively, but I have dealt with for good and bad with many big names over the years....I got recruited and then removed by Dreams as a mod on Voobly...muted on MSN Zone by a number of 2k player mods, (my fault), made some great friends from early 2000s...some of which I still have on FB. It's been an fundamental part of my life on and off since 1999.
You reap what you sow, a good community is only thanks to wholesome content creators
And the players. 20 years of playing the same game that is not chess/tetris/go is quite something.
Dave casting is super underrated. Love his chaotic style
Dave is besht
Who else can have as much fun with bird pathing and corner checks?
Coming from League, it's such a culture shock to see how much everyone loves this game. I've never seen players that actually seem to Enjoy their game the way aoe2 players do. It really does seem like this community is born out of pure passion. Meanwhile, you can't watch new League pros on stream and the top content creators have stalled so hard....
I quit League because of Riot Vanguard, not because i hated the game (i actually had a lot of fun with the game), and it's the vibrant community that helps ease the transition. I don't play online currently, but I love watching the content and hanging out in streams and sharing memes. I can't believe how much adoration this community has for the game. I love Age of Empires, and I'm thankful for everyone you mentioned, and you, too.
I mean League is a low bar...
thank you Hera , a newbie like me would have quit without ur guides and fun content
I’ve long left the community but loved my time streaming and playing the ranked ladder. You even visited my stream once! The Aoe2 community is nothing short of amazing.
if your watching this you are still part of the community bro, we appreciate you!
I've never streamed and its been years since I last played an online game. There's no other game that has a community like this and its what keeps me watching streams and videos on AoE2.

Cheers Hera it’s a blessing to watch you stream and videos and become a great person and help so many people day by day with your streams alone.
I would like to say, that life makes you more humble, when I saw you playing for the first time, I thought you were an arrogant person, however, today I am surprised by the mature way you give thanks to the community. Congratulations for all your achievements, I hope you continue to grow as well as the community, you have gained a new subscriber 👍
Such a wholesome video, I'm just like you actually Hera in the sense that zeroempires brought me back. I wish I got more into voobly, but the game ranger community was also pretty fun. I remember when HD came out and I found T90 at 2k subs, it's amazing how his story turned out. Great video Hera ❤
It must be great to be part of something so big and becoming a part of it's history. Lots of newcomers learn with and from you.
I am really looking forward to that documentary, can't wait for it! I also fell in love again with the game thanks to ZeroEmpires and creators of those times like BBQTurkman.
As a simple member of the community I'd like to thank you Hera for the great value you bring to the whole scene, which indeed wouldn't be the same without any of the great names you mention in this video.
Long live AoE and it's community!
Zero Empires is an absolute legend.
@@austin33785made a stupid decision leaving his channel and community then tried to get back to it.
Hera: I was so excited to play ranked for the first time!
Literally everyone else: I am so scared to get stomped by sweaty players who are so much better and more experienced than me.
Hera built different
AOE2 was the very first online game I played between 2001-2003, I still remember WCG and legends of those days, when I saw a Redbull tournament in 2023 I was like 'WOW, the game's still alive' so I came back. Amazing to see the game's still rocking the world. It's truly something special \o/
I've been around since the Zone. Never really got better and I don't have the time to play as much anymore. I appreciate RUclipsrs like yourself as I still feel like I'm part of the community.
Love you bro. I keep up with the Age scene less and less as I grow older but I still feel like I grew up with you in a strange way. Thanks for taking the responsibility of your platform seriously and the growth of yourself and the community around you seriously. It's been a pleasure watching you become the player you've become and the man you've become.

Well said
Thank you Hera so much for this vid. I remember my childhood times when I enjoyed AoE2 so much with my siblings without even having the clue on how to properly play the game. And I am so happy to see this game growing during all that time and blooming and expanding so much over these years. Since DE launched I got back to it again, all the community mentioned by you Hera drawing people in and making the game so appealing. Now I am back to the game with my brother, encouraging friends to give it a try and test ourselves in multiplayer games. Glad to have you all here, glad to see it growing. Let's keep it going people :)
Hey man, I can't say how happy I am that you made this video. This openness and outspokenness is really what supports the good things in life. I really hope that this thing called aoe2 that we belong to will have a long long time to go. Thank you very much
Superb video Hera!
The AoE2 community is also thankful for all that you do for this game as a pro player, a great content creator, and an inspiring person in the AoE2 world.
Thanks for everything Hera. I'll miss your content.
Thanks Hera! , saludos desde Argentina , Buenos Aires, G.O.A.T
Very nice video, thx. I play AOE literally since the day it came out. Played with friends by installing it at the bank I worked at (1997/1998), you could still install anything, and setting up a network was not easy at home. Played just against AI until DE came out and colleagues asked if I wanted to play a little LAN. Discovered T90 and that there was an online scene. Now I play online, learned about build orders from you. Still potato player, but I blame that on my age now. Love the good spirited community and the making good natured making fun of each other. Thx for all you do for this amazing game and community.
This community is just amazing.
Thank you, Hera, I can only feel grateful for seeing the game I used to play as a kid, a teen, and still enjoy playing, having such a nurturing community, that not only kept the game alive, but to thrive to an extent that we can enjoy it for so long, and also to be optimistic about the future, with these people I belive we still have a long way to go.
Thanks a lot.

I appreciate your videos so much man. Sat down and listened, loved hearing about it all like same, my appreciation for AOE2 is huge, and going over everything and sharing in that appreciation was nice. Solid way to spend half an hour. Like how lucky are we? Really we are so blessed to be in such a good community, not just a good community in the sense that there'ss activity, but in the sense that there's so much of a family vibe everyone is so kind to each other, and we all want each other to succeed. Can not wait for that history video too man I love the fact that aoe2 been around long enough now that it's got a storied history.
Thank you, Hera:
The community is fortunate to have a champion with such appreciation for the game-
Hey bro’
I started playing aoe2 back in the days somewhere around 2009 because of my biggest brother and cousin. I’ve left for a long time and started playing again purely for nostalgia a few months ago.
I was not expecting so much content and active creators for a game so old, you hooked me to competitive gaming of aoe2 and its awesome to see.
S/o to you, to all the aoe2 content creators out there and to the fanbase
Love the shoutout for the Chinese scene. The Arabia tournament they threw together these past few weeks has been spectacular.
I used to play AOE2 since Age of Kings as a kid, and then The Conquerors as a teenager. I stopped playing for years, picking it up very sporadically to play the campaigns. Recently I started to olay again because a good friend of mine also plays. We don't play competitively, just among friends once every couple of weeks, and I sometimes play the campaigns when I have time.
My hope is that the community keeps going strong until my children are old enough to play.
Resonance22, ZeroEmpires and T90 got me back into this game!
NO Titanic?
Thanks to you Hera, it's been incredible to share this journey with you, how you almost left the game for good, and now being THE ONE.
I was able to enjoy the game of my childhood again thanks to you and Tatoh, I was able to dream to become a streamer and a professional player. Met incredible people.
I would personally like to thank T90 for helping me fall asleep when I needed it.
Lmfao 🤣
I love the shoutout to Zero Empires. I credit him to bringing me back to my favorite childhood game 8-9 years ago.
Spirit of the Law and Hera got me back into AoE2 during Covid and I’m still loving the scene, still regularly play with friends despite having adult lives!
Beautiful video man. You looked like a giddy happy kid when you were talking about beating Viper for the first time, so wholesome 11.
I want to give a shoutout to the Liquipedia editors as well, I use that site so much to keep up with tournaments, it's massive for me to have a tool like that.
Thank you Hera, even many years i could not play AoE2, and i cannot play right now, still i am a part of this game and i feel myself inside this community so much. Watching not only you but also all major tournaments, twitch streams, RUclips videos especially the Viper, Sotl, Memb, Daut, T90, Ornlu and other many RUclips channels
Special thanks to all who was, has been or going to be in this community.
beautiful and heartwarming, thank you for this
It's a lot of effort to be 1100 in my experience. Can't imagine how much work the top guys put in
Big thanks also to Ensamble Estudios for making the original game wich came before i was born. And big thanks to the brain behind all of the project Sandy Petersen.
Sandy love!
Great video, glad you took the time to step back and see this. Not everyone can take a step back and see this. Good on you.
love your content and love how much of a thoughtful guy you are. This is amazing and I'm so happy you are putting this out. In many communities the past just gets forgotten, or worse, changed or erased. It's meaningful to take the time to thank the people and the events of the past.
Te recomiendo a un nuevo Caster llamado "Cast of Empires", también es de Canada cómo vos Hera. Su canal es muy reciente, pero buen contenido. Quizás nos cruzamos por alguno de sus directos en RUclips.
I started playing this game for real in April this year. I have fond memories of AoE1 as a little kid playing it with my friend a few times. But wow, I really fell in love with this game and the community. I missed out all those years having it in my steam libary and not really playing. I just know that I will play this game for a very long time.
you are nailing it at tthe end, there is no esport community bonding together like that on a global scale for the cause of a good authentic game... great video hera, loved the openness here!
My favorite age of empires creator by far! 🥳 Thx Hera for all the good content. You are reason I always come back to play AofE
the recent palisade gate video was very spirit of the law feeling
This is a great video to watch right after the one from yesterday where you and Embee talk smack for like 35 minutes haha.
But for real tho, really great video. I appreciate that you took the time to just be honestly appreciative. I think you speak behalf of everyone in the community with the things you said here.
Age of Empires,
Its the best community games,
No discution possible about it !
Thank you very much, Hera! Thank you Spirit of the Law, Zero Empires, TheViper and all the content creators and pro players! This is a great community.
your appreciation of others is a great look man. Keep it up! We all love this game and seeing a top player being appreciative of the community just makes me really proud. There are other top tier pros who don't seem to care about the community at all.
We would play after school. LAN connect. For hours in computer lab. Great game
i was watching Spirit Of The Law for years only playing single player before i started to venture out on ranked multiplayer. he’s the goat
The vid being so good that it inspired you shows how well edited it was. If there's an editor reminder to also pay them well
Thanks for the video Hera, made me smile during a difficult time for me :)
I think they'll keep updating and keeping the game around. It's made for competitive play and so accessible.
Been here since 2005 with age of kings and conquerors
Another Personal shoutout to ZeroEmpires. The T90 of the dark ages of aoe2
I used to be a top player for AoK DM in the early 2000s in the zone. Then played just for a short time in GameRanger and Voobly. Many years later I came across your videos and I'm back playing! Transition to RM from DM is tough though 😅 keep it up Hera, you are the best!
Had me tearing up! A beautiful community with beautiful people!!!
It really is a great community and you are certainly a great part of it! Keep being a nice, kind guy even if life brings you challenges!
I personally want to thank the developers. They are creating the actual product that we get to enjoy and it is sometimes easy to forget how much work that is. They get sometimes bashed for pathing and such but it is honestly incredible and impressive how well they got this 25 year old game working in our modern times.
Really appreciate you Forgotten Empires!
Thank you too Hera !
You deserve it !
You are such a good guy, you are a very strong player and on top of that, you are great to watch and listen !
GG !! =)
Imo the most important guy in recent years for the game is Spirit of the Law. He single handily drew more players back to the game than any pro players.
Shoutout to the mid 2000s MacOS GameRanger AOE2 Community, you know who you are (there were dozens of us!)
Thanks for the vid hera. Inspiring. ❤
Hey hera, t90 brought me back to playing the game 2 years ago after lurking on RUclips for like 6 years. But you made me enjoy and want to grind the ladder and tournaments because of your guides. Spirit of the Law is the one who brought me back to AoE2 too! I watched his video when it popped up after not playing AoE for proabalby ~10 years. But after looking into it and seeing the DE I got it and I got so much great fun out of it! Glad you mentioned him, I totally agree that his type of content is a big draw into the game.
Glad I got back into the game this year. So much fun
What a blessing bro!!!
RIP ZEROEMPIRES AND RESONANCE22!
GOOD GAME
As i played aoe before aoe2 i would say, aoe2 story is incomplete without aoe1.
We were kids when we first played aoe1, and i remember the first time we played it, as we were playing farmvil style and all of a sudden ai attacks us with a knight or something " white horse" and we got DESTROYED and it was very intimidating for us as kids.
We only played it occasionally and were clueless for the most part, bur everything started there.
You're welcome ;p
The real heroes are first and foremost Microsoft, who continue to make huge donations for tournaments - I imagine they're making a loss on this game. Perhaps not.
The other heroes are those who donate either regularly or with the triple or quad figures. Those are really insane.
Without them perhaps one or two pros would exist.
Then finally the pros themselves for taking a chance at a game and it paying off. For giving us the content.
A great community all around.
A HISTORY OF AOE 2 DOCUMENTARY IS COMING YESSSsssssss
@33:41: very true. appreciate your showing of gratitude - cheers!
