I've been researching a light solo tent for this summer for backpacking and bike packing adventures but was loathed to spend a fortune of my own cash on the MSR Hubba NX or Big Agnes Copper Spur. So I thought I'd try the Fjern Gokotta as a budget alternative at just £155 from Sport Pursuit. Here's my first impressions of this 1.1kg lightweight tent.

Hi Andrew, i have the 2p and just put a vid up to see if you can pitch it outer first .....spoiler ...you can 👍👌
Excellent review. I bought one a little while ago and have used it once. Fjerns pitching instructions are not great as the pole hubs and cross member can be assembled 2 ways but you've got it spot on. I lengthened the end tie outs but had considered triangulation which I will do now after seeing your video. I think it's a great buy for the price vs weight and decent quality.
I think it's a good buy at £155 I have to say, glad you like yours too as I need to get more nights in it to see if it's a keeper :-)
@AndrewParkOutdoors I'm 6'1" as well so need to be careful on touching the inner but using a robens starlight 2 so appreciate the inner not hitting my face in the wind 😁
Looks good value and well made.i,ve used sport pursuit for about 8 yrs.always had quality products at a good price.looking forward to seeing the tent in your future adventures.cheers mate.
Nice review. Looks good for that price for a summer tent. More headroom than many.
It's quite a goldilocks combo of qualities but not for the tall when lying down in particular.
I'm from the US, this seems like a sidegrade not a budget option from the MSR tent. So if this is what helps UK people go for it!
According to FJERN's website it is priced similarly to the MSR Hubba tent and the Sportpursuit listing has been de-listed. Reading the specs that is a big steal for that price that tent, those types of tents usually run well into the three hundred dollar range and beyond.
Thanks for the review Andrew, seems well priced and made. I think fjern are sport pursuits own brand label these days, generally positive reviews, just never owned any of the kit myself. Enjoy the tent!
Hi Andy, Hope you are well. I got the Fjern Gokotta 2 for Christmas. I haven't used it yet, but it's about to be given a wee fright next week, as I'm bikepacking the Hebridean Way from Vatersay to the Butt of Lewis with it.
I'll report back, after 12 April as to how it performed. It seems well made, as an alternative to the MSR Hubba Hubba (or in the case of the solo tent, Hubba NX). I bought an Aliexpress version of the NX some years ago and used it to destruction. I think it cost me £35.
It's a great design though.
I look forward to watching your field test video in due course. Yours aye, Norrie frae Lithgae
Be keen to hear how you get on , that's a trip we've been thinking of doing . I hope the weather gods look kindly on you 😊
@@AndrewParkOutdoors Just back from the Western Isles. The Hebridean Way was going quite well until Storm Kathleen decided to intervene. I got to the Sound of Harris (for the ferry to Leverburgh) before having to bail out! It was difficult to stay on the bike, never mind make any progress. The route is quite exposed and also hilly. Need to try again in better weather.
Regarding the Fjern Gokotta 2 tent, it performed perfectly, coped with the wind and had very little condensation. It's remarkably easy and quick to pitch. There's plenty of space inside for one person, plus their gear, and with the dual porches would suit two people if their kit was housed in there. I was able to store my folding bike in one of the porches. The tent seems well made and very light for a two person set up.
There were one or two niggles with the tent. First, the zips were not two-way, only opening from the bottom. There was plenty of room to cook though but this prevented easy venting due to the zips. The doors were tied back with basic ties which would have been better with some elastic. The two doors allowed a number of ways to leave the door or doors open to avoid the wind. It's possible to keep the door open by undoing the air vent strut and then placing the strut through the door tie. This worked well.
Overall, the Gokotta 2 seems like a really good alternative to the MSR Hubba Hubba. Mine cost £215, which is less than half the MSR price.
If you want to borrow it to try it out, let me know. Yours aye, Norrie frae Lithgae
Storm Kathleen on the western isles must have been a nightmare. That's why I'm hoping to choose a time at short notice to go too. Thanks for the offer , tent sounds good and I might take you up on that in the future for a wee review. Great effort on the trip sir !A
Thank you Andrew, I was looking forward to a review of the Gokotta. Some decent spec for the money, and at just over 1kg ! That's quite impressive. Also thumbs up for the rain test. I have got my eyes on this tent mainly because of the price to weight ratio. I can't wait to see the full review to see if it lives up to expectations ... and if at 6ft3 I could fit in 🤣 All the best.
At 6 , 3 strike it off your list I'd say ! A
I've never found a 1 person tent that's big enough for someone who's even 6ft
@@AndrewParkOutdoors Thanks for the response. I have never understood why tent manufacturers don't do a standard and a XL version of some of their models. It is not unusual to be 6ft or more. That aside, people don't want their feet or head touching both ends of the inner and by design these are the 2 areas which slope the most. 210cm length seems to be the industry standard, but I don't find that it suits my needs. Anyway, rant over. All the best.
Hi Andrew, I bought the same tent a few months ago, I had the OEX jackal 2 before, nearly a third of the weight and so far it’s not leaked, just about the right size for a proper 1 person tent and I’m hoping to use it on the Afric Kintail way in May. Hopefully there will be some good weather and I can use it without the fly.
Should be ideal for that and that's a wee trip I really fancy myself too. A
looks like a decent budget alternative although Im just not a fan of inner pitch first. got to say for the price seems of good quality.
Theoretically MSR can be pitched fly first - I'd really like to see Andrew P try that out as I think there'd be more love for the tent in UK if it were an option at least.
@@motoani941I have the 2p version and have just put a video up showing just that 👍
Looks like a good one Andrew. Came to this too late and all sold out at Sportpursuit. Pity as I think it would have fitted the gap in my collection😞
I think that might have partly been my fault ....;-)
@@AndrewParkOutdoors yep are you on a commission 😎
Wish I had !
Cracking in-depth review, looks like a great tent 👌🏻
What sold you on it over the copper spur?
Price Craig ! And possibly that it might be stronger in wind, heard some folk say their BA was a bit fragile in wind
@AndrewParkOutdoors I've never owned a BA but everyone seems to rate them. It'll be interesting to see how you get on with the fjern 👍🏻
A question that most will not ask. Why's the freezer door open😮
oh the freezer broke, just being replaced this week :-(
Looks like a mini Mongar.
It does !
😂😂😂 fjern In Norwegian meens : well a bit ehhhh slow In the brain to say it kindly
Haha, they should have checked that ! 😝
Wouldn't buy from any site that demands your email just to browse the site...
No, no and a big NO
threw me off too first time a couple of years ago but the price drew me in this time !
I saw these on eBay recently. I do like the fly colour. Will be interesting to see how it performs in windy conditions.
yes i'll need to get it out for more of a thrashing
Good initial overview. Decent option instead of the MSR Hubba NX1..I like it...might press the button on it as I have just given away 😢my lovely Hubba to a more needy young man in Argentina.😉 The Hubba a tad wider at 84cm...plus DAC poles..pays yer money....😉😉....🙂🙂from llama_ladee_anny
yes Id probably spend the cash on the MSR version too but the slightly sculpted fly give me the fear :-)
ANOTHER tent ,as you say it’s a MSR HUBBA NX .Bargain for the price if ya on a budget.still haven’t used my new tent yet 😩 .2 season with all that mesh. 👍
it really is similar !
