The fact that Celebi got to see the sunrise for the first time in her entire life, while dying in Grovyle's arms, as they disappeared together. What the hell man, I'm crying again just remembering it
or the fact that Dusknoir gave up his entire existence, the very thing he was so afraid of doing, just for the sake of making an impact. The sake of knowing he exists. Going against his very nature as a ghost.
Imagine being in their position. They believe they just fought and secured a future they won’t get to see. Only one last fleeting sunrise offers them solace... it’s warmth permeating their bodies on top of an otherwise dark, frozen peak. Grovyle will never see his beloved partner again. Dusknoir’s change of heart was incredible, but still so tragically short lived. They wonder what could have been had they only been given more time... And yet once a deified dragon and a shining shadow disappear... the two who remain, those who were primarily responsible for this sunrise... hold each other in tears, expecting that this last goodbye will be the last thing they know before they fade into nothingness. Due to the flow of time, they are not sure they can even hope for an afterlife... perhaps they simply expect to be erased entirely from existence... But rather than contemplate the dread approaching, they hold each other, and stare out to the horizon, feel the breeze finally blowing, and the warmth going through their skin, even as their bodies show signs of soon disappearing... Perhaps they wonder how much more could have been if they had been selfish and preserved their lives... but the morning sun gives the peace they need to embrace their end. Even if this is the end... what a magnificent gift they were able to give the world. And albeit brief... they cherish all the time they had with each other. And so, in the morning sun, they smile for one another one last time as they face their ends, knowing that they accomplished all they set out for... and they did it with each other.
And looking down on the world restored by those three, the ones willing to pay the ultimate price to save it...The original one rewards them with the chance to live on in the new future...

This theme makes me cry every time i hear it. They managed to defeat primal dialga in both the past and the future to stop the literal collapse of time. In that moment, grovyle, dusknoir and celebi have fully accepted their fate that this is truely the end for them , but the world blessed them with the first sunrise in a devastated world where they only knew darkness. This music i find perfectly captures the feeling of 'victory but with a cost'. Although they are eventually saved by the higher being arceus, in this specific moment they are content with disappearing maybe even fully ceasing to exist in all timelines, but its okay because the world is finally saved. Thats just my take on this song but this game means an awful lot to me and my childhood
the cutscenes are just so raw. For a children's game, this has perhaps the deepest concepts I have ever seen out of anything. Though they come back in the end, we're shown how lives change, such as Dusknoir. Like the real world, lines between good and evil are blurred to the point of it being near difficult to truly tell who is in the right or, simply, misguided; and finally, it shows that no matter what you do in life, whether you were good or bad, all things do come to an end one day. No matter who we are, we are united by fate. The return of these characters represents how life still goes on, and also because I think if they permanently erased these guys everyone would have emotional damage, but my point still stands. This game gives the feels every time, it's truly an emotional masterpiece.
How Long To Beat says it takes 25 hours to beat the main story. It would take approximately 8,376,949,946,910,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years to beat the game that many times (taking leap years into account). It would take around 15,591,835,643,400,000,000 years to walk around the circumference of the observable universe (also taking leap years into account). You'd have to walk about 537,265,152,000,000 laps around the universe to reach the amount of time needed to beat Explorers of Sky that many times, and that's just for the main story, not the special episodes or the postgame story!
Okay but if they actually died tho... It would've been so heartbreaking and powerful because they did what they set out to do, even with the consequences in mind.
@@nummurrow6360 Sometimes, power is unnecessary. Grovyle and Celebi achieved their life goals. Dusknoir realized his true potential. Everything set up, paid off. For all intents and purposes, they DID die. But they were brought back. And THAT is the crucial difference from them not dying at all. Sure, from an external POV, there’s no effective difference at the end. But this isn’t about what would have been most impactful to the player. The player ALREADY expected them to not come back, since it was made clear that WE, the protagonist, alone, were only brought back by the whims of a god. We didn’t think or expect the same privilege would be extended to our friends in the future - and, depending on your perspective, it almost certainly WASN’T, since our revival in the past was all Dialga intended, but Arceus (presumably) went above and beyond. Personally, I am BEYOND EXHAUSTED of the “villain reforms just in time to sacrifice themself” trope. Dusknoir deserves to have time to BE reformed. Grovyle and Celebi deserve the chance to address the growing affection they have. Even the Sableye deserve the chance to learn what life in a free world is like. If Dialga, Palkia, and - most importantly - DARKRAI earn that chance, the heroes of this story DEFINITELY earned it, and keeping something they earned away from them for the purpose of a cheap subversion would make the whole ending far weaker in my eyes. Happy endings don’t undermine the hardships the heroes overcame to achieve them, and I _will_ die on this hill.
@@nummurrow6360 I just wholeheartedly disagree. I believe you’re underplaying how valuable such a revival is in this context, because the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series most definitely does NOT shy away from darker themes or motifs, death included. But besides that, I think you’re interpreting a crucial moment VASTLY differently from me, so let me cover those bases. Long comment, especially the last… paragraph, but considering we both seem to be pretty passionate about this, I doubt you’ll mind, lol. Grovyle, Celebi, Dusknoir, etc. BELIEVED that the only way for the future to change was for them to die. And, for all intents and purposes, _they were correct._ They accepted their fate, and that they were destined to disappear. Until something else took priority. Remember, they started to disappear WELL before the final battle with Primal Dialga. They could just as easily have accepted that they’d accomplished their goal. The future had been rewritten, there was nothing else to be done. But they didn’t think TWICE about chasing Primal Dialga to defend the Passage of Time and potentially save the past, despite it not concerning them in the slightest. Grovyle didn’t just want to save the people of the future, which he had to die to do. He ALSO chose to MAYBE save the people of EVERY time while ALREADY DYING. And _that_ is what the most important factor is. Grovyle says it himself in his famous monologue: “Eventually the day will come when I won't be here anymore. Since that's the case, the timing of it doesn't matter. The important thing is not how long you live... It's what you accomplish with your life.” If Grovyle’s story ended without the special episode, I would ABSOLUTELY agree that his permanent sacrifice would be the most satisfying resolution to his story. But instead, he reconciled with his worst enemy, because of his willingness to forgive and see the spirit of others. Grovyle’s spirit lives on REGARDLESS of whether or not he, himself, does. Not BECAUSE he doesn’t, but REGARDLESS of it. His absence may make his spirit look brighter in compensation, but he demonstrates that shining spirit by being ALIVE, too. THAT was his point. Shine in life so you continue to after death. And I CANNOT find any flaw in permitting him to shine longer. One day, he will disappear, and all that will be left is his spirit. But his circumstances were never what caused his spirit to shine as it did. HE was. That’s why, when he was already disappearing, and his goals had been achieved, but heard that Dialga MIGHT cause damage to time in some regard, he had no second thoughts about going and fighting, essentially, a vengeful god to stall for time. The decision came from his new circumstances, but the lack of hesitation came from him - and his spirit. Him being rewarded with the ability to display that strength and will in the new life he intended for others is the PERFECT ending to his story - in fact, I could argue going even MORE basic-happy-ending and letting him communicate with the protagonist and partner. Would it be more impactful if he died forever? Sure, maybe. But his spirit lives on through the team either way. And through his partners. And through Dialga. And even, in a twisted way, through Darkrai. Denying him his well-earned life that he was cheated out of from the beginning DOES feel cheap to me, after watching him prove time and time again how MUCH he deserves it, and in comparison to the idea of rewarding him in the most apropos way a literal god can accomplish.
yeah, as nice as it was that they brought back to life a better ending was to have them dead than show how the trees blossoming. to show that they succeeded.
