    A useful tip: The polite marker 요 at the end like that of 안녕하세요 is more like "여" than "요" in reality. Other 요s are pronounced as they are written, but this polite 요 is not. As a result, "요요요. (It's yo-yo.)" is more like "요요여".

    For people who struggle with the vowel 으, just remember how the British pronounce, or don't pronounce certain words in speech. "I said I was going to the shop". An English person would sound like "I said I was going t' th' shop." The sound "Schwa" is used in a lot of English words. Like "Alzheimer's" doesn't sound like how an American might say it. The "Mer" in the word sounds much more like 므 than anything. So while the Vowel 으 doesn't exist in English as such. The sound is used all of the time by Native English speakers in Britain.

    Wait....
    So I have watch your video on having a Korean name and since I’m not very in depth in the Korean culture, I decided not to make/have one. Though, I was wondering does 사는 .... 이에요/예요 works for English names.
    Like how would I say ‘My name is Trinity.’ in Korean? And if so, which one (이에요/예요) would I use (for Trinity)?

    • @GoBillyKorean
      @GoBillyKorean  3 года назад +1

      I recommend checking Naver dictionary (or Naver.com) for finding the Korean spelling of any name you'd like to know. You can find if there are other celebrities with that name, what their Korean name is, and pick the one you'd like. Sometimes there can be multiple options for certain names.

    • @GoBillyKorean

      아니야 is not simply "no," but is the negative conjugation of 아니다 ("to not be") and means that something/someone "isn't."

      Check out the "Preface" of the book, before the first section. There's a small section where I talk about using this form. Also you'll learn ~이에요 (and the 요 form) later in the book. And in the back of the book you'll find all of the conversations re-written using the 요 form as well :)

    • @GoBillyKorean
      @GoBillyKorean  Год назад +1

      You would say it twice, but 예요 would tend to get pronounced as 에요 so it would end up being 예에요 in that case.

  • @honestlythough7250

    In the example using your name, you switched politeness levels between sentences (polite 예요 to honorific (?) 습니다). I’ve seen koreans do this in k-dramas as well and I’m wondering if there’s a reason behind it

    • @GoBillyKorean
      @GoBillyKorean  4 года назад +1

      For this video, you don't need to stress about that much - I'm only teaching some quick phrases here so learners can get to use what they're learning right away. But a future episode in this series will teach both of those forms. The ~습니다 ending isn't honorific, but it's known as "formal" speech. You can also find other videos about this sort of speech on my channel if you're interested in getting a head start. I'll teach both formal and honorific speech in this series.

    Hi, Billy. Since Americans place their surname last, how would a Korean in a professional setting (in Korea), address an American? Would it be his/her last name and title or first name and title? And, is it awkward or wrong for Americans to introduce themselves in a business setting by stating their first name and then their last name or should they flip the order? Thank you!!

    • @GoBillyKorean
      @GoBillyKorean  3 года назад

      They'd address you however you introduced yourself to them, but it could depend on the specifics. Usually though just how you introduced yourself.

    • @GoBillyKorean

      That's due to sound change rules, which are explained in lesson #9 of this series. It's ㅂ + ㄴ --> ㅁ + ㄴ.
