      Like how about Mary Did You Know, or Sound of Silence or The Prayer. Or power rock like Bohemian Rhapsody. I don't think there is a genre from jazz to rock, country to show tunes they haven't dared. That includes some actual hymns. Amazing Grace comes to mind. Country gave them their third Grammy win. They did Jolene featuring the Queen of Country herself Dolly Parton.

    The Mohave desert. That's where this was filmed. And they had already recorded the song at that point, the members were basically lip syncing. The difference between them lip syncing and say Milli Vanilli lip syncing is these guys actually sing when they are doing it for the video component, they just aren't recording the audio. Milli when they lip synced sometimes didn't even sing when it was supposed to be them singing.
    Little bit of trivia. It seems Kirsten had hurt her leg prior to filming this. Did you notice how she is pretty stationary any the men walk around and toward her throughout, finishing in that vee formation? I actually think that helped the power of the video, providing a structure that might not have otherwise been there.

    It was filmed in the desert near Barstow, CA, for their Christmas album. It was 98 degrees that day, but they were wearing heavy coats because it was supposed to be Christmas time. They kept having to wipe sweat off their faces because of the heat. Good times!

  • @margretrosenberg420
    @margretrosenberg420 Год назад +1

    Recorded in the studio, filmed in the Mojave Desert outside of Barstow, California.
    This was one of the songs on their 2017 Christmas album, despite not actually being a Christmas song. (This is their usual practice. Considering that pentaholics tend to listen to their Christmas albums year-round, this is fair.) Because it was the official video for a Christmas album song they felt a need to dress in winter clothes, despite the fact that it was near the end of a very hot day - the temperature was around 98° Fahrenheit, according to Scott. So they were totally miserable under all that clothing.
    Additionally, Kirstie's foot or ankle was injured so she was unable to walk with them; it was as much as she could manage to stand there while the others walked up behind her.
    They were off-road and terrified that they wouldn't be able to find their way out in the dark, but they wanted to catch Mitch's hat eclipsing the setting sun, so they got as much video as possible just as quickly as they could manage, then got out as fast as possible.
    It sounds like the video shoot from hell, but it resulted in one of their most iconic videos. Somehow, Pentatonix always manages to turn the difficult and painful things into advantages.

    Leonard Cohen (who passed away a few years ago) never really stop writing this song. It has dozens of verses, most of which nobody has heard. He was a prolific songwriter, but (and I may make enemies by writing this) it's best to hear covers rather than Cohen's originals. Cohen's range was limited, and he had problems staying on pitch. Other songs by Leonard Cohen: "Suzanne" (sung by Judy Collins), "Famous Blue Raincoat" (sung by Damien Rice), "Bird on a Wire" (sung by k d lang), and "Everybody Knows" (might as well listen to Cohen's version on this one).

    "Hallelujah" was written by the late, great Leonard Cohen, a Jewish man who had become an atheist. He apparently wrote around 80 verses, but he only released 7 of them to the public. These are the four verses that are most usually sung.
    The song is about sexual love that goes wrong, for whatever reason. The second verse refers to two stories from the Old Testament, about powerful leaders who made major mistakes because of misguided love (or perhaps lust). The first is the story of David and Bathsheba, and the second is the story of Samson and Delilah.

    PTX is the gold standard. Home Free is a close 2nd imho. PTX has 3 Grammys and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They revived acapella and bought it to the mainstream. PTX won the sing off the year before Home Free. I love both groups.

    • @Contridiction-vp3fv
      @Contridiction-vp3fv Год назад

      @dazzie6272 Since you are a HF fan, maybe you can clear something up for me that I heard years ago, I read that S4 of the Sing Off, PTX came in for a week and mentored HF, when they were about to lose, and that week changed the outcome of the show for HF. I have no idea if that's true or not, I've never really posted it except for twice several months apart when some trolls came in talking about HF was better. Both times it shut them up, but I don't want to say it if it's not true.

    • @leslieoneal4464
      @leslieoneal4464 Год назад

      Just to get things straight before I reply... I like PTX and actually discovered Home Free by watching PTX's videos. In all fairness, I adore HF and never really listen to PTX much outside of a few here and there. Just not my thing, I guess.
      Now to reply to your "question"... Everyone should know how reality shows like The Sing-Off work by now. They bring back previous winners to perform and give advice to the groups now going through it. It's a "standard gimmick", if you will.
      Home Free was never "losing" on the show. They pretty much had it wrapped up from their 3rd performance. Lol They never even had to do a "battle", as they were never in the bottom two. 👍
      PTX didn't visit the show until just before the last 3 groups performed on FINALE night! They visited each group for a few minutes, did a photo op, and imparted pearls of wisdom such as "do something unique to stand out". If that's "mentoring", alrighty then. 😂
      Hope that clears up any confusion.

    • @leslieoneal4464
      @leslieoneal4464 Год назад

      P.S.
      I would never call you a troll just for thinking/saying that PTX is better than Home Free (or anybody else) - nor would I attempt to "shut you up".
      Everybody has different tastes! That's what makes the world an interesting place! 😉👍

      @@leslieoneal4464 Yes, The show was off the air before I even knew it existed, so I had no idea what transpired. I've said before I will never say a bad word about HF. They are extremely talented, and work good together. I don't like the genre's of music they are best known for. But I have suggested them to friends I knew would like them. So we are just opposite on the two groups. I always investigate anything I'm told that I am unsure of, which is why I brought this up to you. It wasn't to say bad, it was to find the truth. I thank you for sharing your knowledge. You have a great night, maybe we will meet again.

    The members of Pentatonix:
    In this song, the first verse is sung by Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. When describing a man's vocal range, the term "lyric" means that the actual range is greater than the nominal range. Scott's range starts in the middle of the bass range, on the low end, and extends through most of a normal tenor range on the high end. When the bass is soloing, Scott can and does take over the bass harmony line.
    The second verse is sung by Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo (his lowest notes have blown out speakers in live performances), but his range extends to about the middle of a normal tenor range.
    The third verse is sung by Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, the only woman in Pentatonix. Kirstie sings anywhere from low alto through coloratura soprano, the highest soprano range, and she has fantastic whistle notes on top of that. Recently Pentatonix has begun calling her an "alto soprano."
    The fourth verse is sung by Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), natural contratenor. Mitch has a range of just over six octaves and is considered by all the other members of Pentatonix to be the best singer in the band. He's known for his ethereal high vocals, and switches seamlessly between chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice. One of the reasons this song is so beloved among pentaholics is that, for many of us, "Hallelujah" gave us our first Mitch-slap.
    The fifth member of Pentatonix is Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable), beatboxer extraordinaire. Somewhere there may be a better beatboxer than Kevin, but if so I've never encountered him or her. Kevin is generally too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally dips into the uppermost reaches of baritone, and he's known for the beauty of his falsetto. He's also a pretty good rapper. Kevin has perfect pitch. He's been classically trained since childhood on piano, saxophone, and cello. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he calls "celloboxing." He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on saxophone and once on cello. He has a pre-med degree from Yale and had been accepted to Yale Medical School before he decided to become a professional musician instead of a brilliant surgeon. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole planet seem like a brighter place.
    Avi left Pentatonix in 2017, for a variety of personal reasons. He has since gone on to have a very successful solo career; I highly recommend subscribing to his RUclips channel: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic
    In late 2017 Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), joined Pentatonix as Avi's replacement. Matt is another lyric bass. In addition to being the newest member of Pentatonix, Matt is also the youngest member, and I'm told that bass voices improve with age. So it's hard to be sure just what Matt's range is, because it's still growing. To find his current range I recommend listening to a live stream of "Hallelujah" from their recent world tour. You can find one here: ruclips.net/video/ASYzLoi810k/видео.html Matt's arrangement of the second verse seems to be designed to show off his full range, and it will blow you away. I don't believe he's at the basso profundo level yet, though I expect him to reach it within a year or two. But on the high end he's near the top of a normal tenor range.
