He spoke at a Catholic college and shared Catholic beliefs. Parents paid tuition to have these beliefs instilled in their kids. I don't share these beliefs so that's why I didn't send my kids to Catholic school. But he certainly didn't do anything wrong, given the circumstances.

I understand freedom of speech, but there is a time and a place to speak your opinions/values, and I don’t believe that a graduation commencement speech was the time or place for this. Several of the students who attended this speech, particularly female students, have publicly stated that they felt extremely uncomfortable or offended by his speech.
He confidently stated that the women in that room were more excited to start families than to pursue careers or business endeavors. Personally, I felt very offended by this assumption. I’m not saying that I don’t value family, but I value my interests, education, passions, and career path just as much, if not more.
He expressed his offensive, and frankly, quite sexist and homophobic opinions at a commencement speech, targeted at a room full of young people who are just beginning their careers/adult lives.
I don’t understand how anybody can see this and defend it.

We like to think that everyone lives in candy land and all talent doesn't go unnoticed, but the truth is that the more money a family rakes in, the more likely their offspring will succeed. I would be more apt to listen to this man's words if he had a rags to riches story, but knowing that both of his parents are successful shows me that he is someone who has been invested in greatly since birth. There’s a reason for that. A liberal’s opinion today resonates with the vast majority of Americans.
I have three daughters and a son, one of them is a marine and owns a shooting school for women and is now a candidate for the senate of Georgia. One has a masters degree and is married to a Col in the military, one is just a average working lady.? But they all were raised to be what they wanted to be. However I happen to know from experience, that raising a family and taking care of children and a spouse is the most important job in the world for whoever does it. 69% of one demographic was born with no father at home, and look up the results. We should love each other and back each other no matter what our choices in life are.

This speech would’ve resonated with my wife. She was told to go get a career but she’s most happiest being a mom - she said that, not me. She also didn’t realize this until our 2nd child. She worked and left our kids at daycare and was miserable. If she would’ve heard this speech, it would’ve defined her direction. So why are people so upset about this view. There wouldn’t be an uproar with the other views of go conquer your career…also it’s a call for men to step up and sacrifice in order for a mother to best thrive. We can all agree on one thing, Young children need their mother.

I’m really happy that your wife found the life that was best for her. I fully support anybody who chooses to be a stay at home mum or dad. The problem with this speech is that the message to all of the women in that room is that they should want that too. All people (male or female) should have the freedom to find their vocation through prayer, through following God’s guidance and through experience. What he did was inform the women of their vocation. He is not God, he doesn’t know these women, he doesn’t get to make that call. What’s right for your wife and his is not necessarily right for every woman on the planet.
I am absolutely certain that my job is my vocation - God designed me with the skills and talents, resilience and empathy to serve him in my work. He has also given me a beautiful daughter who I love raising. I feel no pull to give up work because that is not who God made me to be.
If men are all different and can be called to any possible career, why wouldn’t women be the same? Why would we be blessed with talents, skills and enthusiasm for something we were not designed for? I do my job because it is what I was designed to do and I am certain that God is happy that I am doing it. This man cannot tell me otherwise.

Accountability for what? He was consistent with his Catholic beliefs talking to Catholic graduates at a Catholic university. He did nothing wrong.
I am a committed Christian. I aim to serve God in my life. I do that through my vocation which is a career where I use the gifts and talents God gave me to help people NOT being a homemaker. For some people being a homemaker is their vocation and I support them in that. However, this man who is living his dream playing football does NOT get to tell me or any other woman what our vocations are or to stay in a lane he has decided for us. I am certain that I am living the life God set out for me, doing the job I trained long and hard for guided by Him whilst also being a mother to my daughter. How dare this man presume to tell anybody what path God has chosen for them? That is between them and God.

By all means he can encourage them to pray and to follow God’s guidance to their vocation. He can warn them to avoid falling into the ways of the world and to miss their true calling - whatever that may be - but a sweeping statement telling all of the women in a room what he thinks they should be is not encouraging them to listen to God, it is telling them to listen to him.

I took the time to go listen to the ACTUAL speech... and WOW did they work some editing magic on it...
As a solidly non-religious person, it wasn't actually all that bad of a speech... especially when taken in the context of a strongly Christian speaker talking in front of a bunch of Christians at a Christian College. While I didn't personally agree with some of his points, neither did i find them offensive or appalling.

Butker's mother is an oncologist and highly accomplished woman, and she graduated from this same school. Him telling this graduating class to embrace their destiny as mothers and homemakers is the epitome of privilege - do as I say, not as I do. He is no role model and totally the wrong candidate for a commencement speaker. The school had their own agenda and were not thinking of the graduates. They apparently insisted he come and deliver this boring and horrendous speech.
