I have to say you are the first youtuber I have watched play this game that hasn't started to bang away with active sensors from nearly the get go!! BRAVO!!
Game looks fantastic, and there is nothing better than listening to your storytelling while playing those games. The Cold Waters series was an absolute blast, hope this becomes a new series!
Nice to see that the game makes it so hard for surface ships to find subs. When we went into war games we had to stay in a specific box at a specific set of depths so the surface ships knew where to look. Several times the judges had to tell us to go up to periscope depth and rotate and radiate because the surface ships could not find us. It was only by luck, that if we were not under guidance to make it easy for surface ships to find us. And you are right on about having sound recordings of adversary ships. A couple of the subs I was on were diverted from our original courses to take recordings of vessels that we did not have recordings on yet.
Hi! So about the acoustic library naval forces have: They record ships and put them in a library. With computer analysis it's even possible to recognize the amount of props and en amount of blades each prop has. Every blade has marks on it, due to cavitation implosions damaging the blade or by other damages. This gives each ship a fingerprint acoustic profile which will be recorded and stored in a library. Again, computer analysis is able to find the right recorded profile with a newly made recording, classifying and identifying an unknown unit. These databases are highly classified, just as EW databases, and only rough data is traded with other friendly nations as no one wants to even show their allies the capabilities of their sensors. So, experienced hearing but especially computer analysis is able to find specifics from a sound, like amount of props and amount of blades per prop which is important data to classify anything you don't have a recording of but know these specifics of (the reason the prop of a sub is always covered up on land in case someone takes a picture of it) and recordings can identify specific units based on the acoustic fingerprints in the database you have. This game feels the most as a realistic sim from all the naval games I've seen so far. Can't wait to play it. Been a while since I've been in the CIC, would love to take control of a SAG again.
Like the Hormuz engagement. I was working in Qatar at that time and we were asked to repair a radar unit from a tanker that had taken a few cannon shells, needless to say, the radar unit was toast.
33:40 Intellectually I know what you meant, but part of me is tickled by the mental image of one incredible specimen of an Iranian sailor toting around a two-ton, ten-meter-long SA-2 Guideline high-altitude surface-to-air missile on his shoulder :P
That sonar "whistle". The first time I ever heard that was when I went to sea for the first time. I was onboard a Type 23 ASW frigate and we were on exercise hunting one of our own subs, if I recall correctly. I had never heard a real sonar outside of war movies. In those movies the sonar always made a pinging noise. When the frigate I was on activated its active sonar you could it it whistle throughout the ship. I had no idea what the sound was and I remember being laughed at by my shipmates when I asked what that noise was. I soon learnt that modern sonars make that long whistle sound rather than the short pinging. It was a very eerie sound. I'm definitely getting this game when it comes out. I'd love to see Royal Navy warships come to it.
Now THIS is the kinda Jingles content I enjoy most. Jingles humor/info dumps plus real life naval experiences. Reminds me of the Cold Waters series. Good stuff.

about the ASW mission, use the sonobuyo on your helos, you didnt used any ! would have saved you and detected a lot sooner, also the helos have the MAD, which comes out at 20ft while moving automatically, set up a track like pattern above any anomaly and you're good. dipping sonar wont be available, as it was post 80's and the game timeline stop right there.
He focused most of the time with the dipping sonar which the Seasprite doesn't have, they only have sonobuoys and MAD, very different from most Asw European helicopters. Sonobuoys and MAD made the helicopter more efficient in ASW since they can hunt while moving.
10:27 the thing is, the FRAM Gearings were rebuilt with emphasis on ASW, evident with gear like the ASROC box launcher amidships, two triple torpedo launchers in front of the superstructure where turret 2 originally was and a hangar which only can accomodate a QH-50 ASW drone
They were but it was ASW for use against diesel electric subs not newer nuclear and albacore style hull subs. Purpose built OHP and Knox class were vastly superior ASW ships than FRAM upgraded Gearings which were a stop gap to replace the too slow Destroyer Escorts the USN still had.

I found it more helpful than some of the other videos due to its longer length and your more laid back play-as-you-go style. I appreciate that, because I believe this game has no tutorial. So I rewound your other video on submarine gameplay several times watching you nonchalantly launch at torpedo at the enemy. I also appreciate you anecdotal (yet important as they are valid) stories of your time serving. Brings a great light, understanding, and relatability to the gameplay, shedding a light on the expert game development, as well as the accuracy to historical context, as you have made aware. I will subscribe, and I hope you can make a series of "soft tutorials" on the game in the future. Thank you!!!
As a former Navy Operation Specialist and someone who had a rather shameless addiction to Fleet Commander forever ago, I've been lurking in the Microprose Discord for about a year patiently waiting for this to drop and November can't come soon enough.
I had the same love for Fleet Command (though I was only a YN1)...played the hell out of it. This definitely looks like as much of a spiritual successor as Cold Waters is to Red Storm Rising.
Once your Fox's missiles were out you should have put her into an ASMD course, essentially a 60 degree angle from your aft to the incoming missile. You are sailing out of your chaff and limiting its usefulness by sailing in an angle toward the incoming ASM threat. Another point of an ASMD course is to allow your CIWS a proper angle to fire which in the case of the fox looked like it wasn't even able to fire a single shot from the CIWS.
My ship, USS Texas CGN-39, replaced the USS Vincennes after they shot down the Iranian airbus. We only went to general quarters twice. Once when Iran was flying in an F14 on us. We painted it with our fire control radar and he courageously flew away. The second was when the brow watch called away a mine sighting. It turned out to be a floating bag of trash, but better safe than sorry.

Yes, Jingles, this is correct. We submariners only seriously worry about other submarines. Surface vessels are treated more like obstacles than opponents. That was my experience in the 90s, anyway.

I think, if the SH-2 can launch a BOL (Bearing Only Launch) in game, the moment of torpedo detection fire off a Bloodhound on the line of bearing to mess with the firing solution of the sub. Another thing, if the helo is airborne and and the Sonar operators detects torpedo in the water, mark the initial detection location, drop an active buoy and set to deep. Typically, subs will go deep after launching their torpedo.
The first time I learnt about thermal layers underwater and how to utilise them in sub to sub combat was from Subwar 2050 published by, you guessed it, Microprose. I still have the manual from when manuals were novels you had to finish before playing. I’m so happy this mythical publisher is back to delight and educate a new generation of gamers.

It's like CMO with graphics, I'm going to love it.
Definitely want to see you playing some more of this game and telling us of your naval experiences
I'd love to see Royal Navy warships come to it.
mega-cool ! "Jane's FleetCommand (deluxe, remastered, revamped, the way it supposed to be back then)" returns....
I am glad this game is finally getting some attention. I’ve had it on my wishlist for awhile
Jingles we need more of these videos this was a brilliant watch
Now THIS is the kinda Jingles content I enjoy most. Jingles humor/info dumps plus real life naval experiences. Reminds me of the Cold Waters series. Good stuff.
I participated in a couple of REFORGER exercise deployments when I was a much younger man. 😉
Jingles didn't even use the Phalanx CIWS to defend against the second wave of Harpoons.
I am so hype for this game. I resubbed just to watch this game on this channel. Jingles was the first RUclipsr I ever really followed and some Sea Power action from the first channel I ever really loved sounds like the best thing in the world.
Love the opening few seconds. It gives a vibe of the movie “The Final Countdown”
about the ASW mission, use the sonobuyo on your helos, you didnt used any ! would have saved you and detected a lot sooner, also the helos have the MAD, which comes out at 20ft while moving automatically, set up a track like pattern above any anomaly and you're good. dipping sonar wont be available, as it was post 80's and the game timeline stop right there.
Dipping sonar IS avaliable in game though, the Soviet Union uses it
He focused most of the time with the dipping sonar which the Seasprite doesn't have, they only have sonobuoys and MAD, very different from most Asw European helicopters.
Jingles in this video: "I know that some of you have hesitations about early access games...."
Jingles in Mingles with Jingles on Monday just gone: "Tell me a time when an early release has ever gone well."
I know early access and early release are different but Jingles being Jingles is fantastic!
>"Tell me a time when an early release has ever gone well."
Kerbal Space Program 1.0.
"Tell me a time when an early release has ever gone well."
Rimworld, Space Engineers, Prison Architect, Subnautica just to name a few. You certainly have to be careful with EA but there have been plenty of successful games.
@@XMysticHerox those are early access, not early release games. So again which early RELEASE game has gone well?
Maybe Starfield, at prerelease they had the game they thought was good enough, not realizing that the gamers actually wanted some kind of improvement in quality. At least it worked. (mostly)
@@JohnWilliamNowak KSP1 was Early Access not Early Release... please try again
@@Royallblu Funny; if you search for "what is an early release game" you get the definition of an "early access game." Almost as though there's no difference. Imagine that.
This has suprise mini Christmas series written all over it, looking forward to it hopefully
I loved Jane's Fleet Command. Played a lot of it. This seems like a great modern update of that.
I absolutely loved this video... I came here because I heard this game launched and it is right up my alley. I found this video, and it helped me so much.
What if you cover a mine with a trash bag?
@@cideltacommand7169 You extend the shelf life.
Wow, the USS Estocin was the ship my dad served on. It's awesome to see it in a game
Old 360 Pacific Harpoon player here. Always tickled when a new naval game comes out.
Dad served on a Spruance class DD when I showed him the game, he said he's going to get the game and really want to wreck Russian ships in the game.
so looking forward to this! Remembers me of the good old days with Silent Service, Red Storm Rising...
Wow... Microprose, now that's a name I've not seen in a long time. Grest Vid Jingles! Wishlisted
I actually played a few dozen hours of Cold Waters thanks to Jingles, and immediately got excited flashbacks when he switched to the submarine scenario
I remember the first time Jingles uploaded a Cold Waters video (I think it was the one with the Kuznetsov class as the thumbnail). How time flies
I love your knowledge and narration on the video. I love when you make sea power videos. I hope to see more. The game is so fun to watch. Specially when the person playing actually knows about the military vessels.
I hope you do a series on this game, I have waited for something like this since Harpoon 2 in early 90s.
More please! I love how knowledgeable you are in the naval arena, and it's so awesome hearing your decisions with that knowledge base
Retired submariner; it always amazes me how much information about the “silent service” is out there. Also, MK-48 is good, but the ADCAP is better.
o7 fellow bubblehead
I actually like that you failed to defend your ships a few times and didn't reattempt the first mission since you would know what you'd be facing. There is more to learn from failure and you describe it perfectly. This is amazing content so I subbed immediately!
Yes, Jingles, this is correct. We submariners only seriously worry about other submarines. Surface vessels are treated more like obstacles than opponents. That was my experience in the 90s, anyway.
Hey, Jingles, just an FYI from my active-duty days, ESTOCIN is pronounced ES-Toe-Sin.
And the OHP class were also known as "torpedo chasers". 😉
And yes, Jingles! The USS KIDD (DDG-993) was there in 1987 for tanker escort service! I was stationed on the bridge when the tanker MV Bridgeton struck a mine.
But we didn't lose any ships ... 😄
This is such a treat! I watch your cold waters videos probably every year, so its very nice that you found a similar game!
Been playing UBOAT a bunch, and I've gotten an itch for modern-era ship warfare after all the WW2 stuff. This is perfect
Just listen to this video was interresting will mining away down here in the Salt Mines.
I have been waiting for you to post this video since
I loved your Cold Waters videos and am thrilled you have access to this game. I’ve had this on my wishlist for a long time. I can’t wait but your videos will help. Thank you!
So glad to see you play this game Jingles! I have been watching your videos for 10+ years, and can’t wait to see the new content you’ll be putting out.
Probably one of your best videos in ages, and close to harkening back to Cold Waters, as you said. BUT! I can't remember the last time I heard you give so many personal memories and activities you had witnessed. Wonderful Video!
"A guy with a SA-2 on his shoulder" That's a big guy! Great video!
I could listen to you talk about this kind of stuff all day. Great video!
I've DONE my waiting! 12 years of it!
"Guy on the back with an SA2 on his shoulder" Geez poor guy!!! Plus now I know why those fast attack craft sank 🙂 ! (Sorry Jingles couldn't resist!)
So glad to see a video by you on this!
“I signed the checks” you got a hearty chuckle from me.
Mr. Jingles, I know the Cold Waters videos were not particularly popular, but I adored them for some reason. So this looks fantastic!
Thank you for your service Jingles!
_"...a guy on the back with an SA-2 on his shoulder..."_ - Wow! Strong guy!!
I did not expect this game and commentary to be this interesting. I'm hooked
Thanks, jingles. I've been waiting for this game forever. Imagine my happiness when I see this video title.
I really like how you talk about history while playing please keep it up
Yeeesssssssssssss More maritime warfare vids with Jingles! At long last our mighty saltwatergnome has returned to the watery depths! Loved the series back when. Here's to this one being a banger as well!
Been waiting for this Jingles!
Great video Jingles, I think this needs to become a regular staple of the channel!
*Gearing has no helicopters, it has no hangar!*
also jingles: *zooms in on the gearings obvious hangar*
ASW drone helis to be exact
That wasn’t the gearing
@@Edawgpilot yes it was, he is talking about the one with the single door at the back and the tiny flight deck with the line across the center
Jingles even mentions it has a flight deck when he says it has no Helicopters (and he isnt wrong)
The Gearing DOSNT have helicopters or a hanger though, it has ASW drones and a small storage area
I dont think they are modled in game, so it might as well be useless in this situation
@@TonySpike if it was modelled, could they have contributed to finding the charlies? with the level of detail the devs put in, I auto assumed that it was possible to deploy and jingles just jingled
Thank you Jingles for this bonus video and a look at an interesting game.
JINGLES, HOLY MOLY MATE I HAVENT SEEN YOU SINCE WORLD OF TANKS 10 YEARS AGO, GOOD SIR I HAVE MISSED YOU
Yeah jingles I heard the check signing part is very in depth and complicated in this game. You have such a HUGE advantage in that part of the game. thanks for the video
Thanks for this. I couldn't make it past 4 minutes of the Montana not shooting in your GOT video, so this was a nice surprise.
Thank you for blessing us with a Sunday video, Jingles!
38:40 What those Sea Kings also have is a surface search radar and a radio. That thing was spotting for those three missile boats and a Silkworm AShM battery. I've seen this mission played by another youtuber. If you keep an eye out you can see it come in from Iranian air space.
Watching this bring out with his real-world naval experience and old stories is great content. More please. Just wait till they add the RN and a Falklands Campaign.
I've been looking forward to this game for so long now, i cant wait! great video Jingles :D thanks for the preview.
Sunday suprise video...best kind of video!
Not a game I'd personally play, but would happily watch you play it and explain all the nuances of naval warfare
When I first heard about this game, i immediately was thinking of the mighty jingles. And here we are not a week later. I hope you do a series after release.🚢
I'd love to see more of this from you! Can't wait to get my hands on it in November!
Oh boy. Its Battlestations: Modern Age. I am gonna enjoy this!
Jinlges, you should check out High Fleet, another game published under Microprose. It's a Diesel-punk themed fleet strategy game with strategic and tactical combat and gameplay. Its heavily inspired by Dune and the Soviet-Afghan war. I find thr lore incredibly interesting and compelling but the gameplay very addicting as well.
How many minorities/ categories of people do you get to play as?
@@BinkyTheElf1you get to shoot escape pods and deal in the "ethnic" peopl.e trade in an event.
Well I definitely wasn't expecting the Vincennes and Aardvarks in todays Jingles video.
