Watching the final scene of the movie telling the Christmas story, I gasped, swallowed dumplings and tears rolled on my eyes. I watched the movie "Smoke" a long time ago and every year before Christmas I watch it again but this time with my younger son Neven. Neven is a 14 year old boy and now is the time to understand life, that sad and beautiful side of life. For me, the movie is a role model among films, a pure classic, what more to say when a movie says it all.

I love the film. and the short story. The photographs taken by Auggie and Tom Waits´s song. All the arts together.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Innocent when you dream! Ain't it the truth...
Harvey Keitel is one of the better actors around and is never acknowledged adequately.

He does not care about stardom. He is a star all of his own.

Keitel is a real treasure. This film and the direction bring out the subtleties of such a fine talent.

Harvey Keitel's smile at 4:15 is one of the sweetest I've ever seen.

Not that the whole movie wasn't excellent, but the look on that lady's face was worth the price of admission.

A wonderful movie, and a beautiful story to have a Tom Wait's song tied together with. I really think that Ashley Judd should have won an Oscar for her portrayal of Auggie's supposed daughter. Yes, it was a very short scene, but powerfully done, and if an Oscar was good enough for Beatrice Straight in, "Network," it's warranted here as well.

He got a good taste in cameras. He got the Canon AE-1 :)) That was my first camera ever from my very first paycheck. I paid $100 for it in the 80's when I was a student. These are excellent cameras in demand even now. Like this film - a class act. A jewel in cinematic art.

Great film right the way through. Ace ending too as this excellent post suggests.

i loved this move. the cantonese version name is the best! 25 years ago, i saw this move during the film festival and i shed my tears when heard friends didnt tell lies to their peers during auggie spoke his story. wayne might not be the best director ( i didnt like joy luck club and of course where he is now) but the black and white ending sparked and i thought it was also one of the best ending of movies (at least in my film book)
25 years later, how many true stories have i shared with others?

@@lafewin1 it's terrific! I came here via an interview with Paul Auster, and hadn't seen Smoke for 20 years. Still haven't watched the whole film again yet, nor Blue In The Face (which I had on VHS until recently). Glad you got this after 8 yrs!
