- We bought four manual machines! A CIntimill 205 Horizontal Mill, a Clausing Colchester 17" Lathe, a MAS VR2 Radial Arm Drill and a Bridgeport! I enjoyed seeing some of the tools, tricks and methods the riggers used to move these machines!

John... Awesome!! I can relate to everything in the video. I've had my share of moving these big machines around. You hiring that awesome rigging service made your job so much easier man. Well done! Just all that tooling alone is well worth the effort. It's a quick, and cheap way to tool up your shop with all the stuff one needs, like those big drills, and clamps. Your growing very fast and it's nice to you you rounding out your shop with so much different equipment.
Make sure you put me on the list for one of the power drawbar kits for for the step pulley head. My Doall is the same thing. Thanks bud!!
I had a lot of nostalgic moments watching this video. My father and I have done almost all of our rigging of the machines we bought over the years by ourselves. Usually with simple hand tools like jacks, rollers, straps, chains, and LOTS of cribbing. My favorite of these times was when we picked up our(my) G&E 36in metal shaper. My dad bought it on the internet from the description, pictures, and recherch. It said it was apout 7000lbs.So we went to pick it up with our hand tools and a 8000lbs rated bumper pull trailer. When we got there and seen the machine we figured out there was no way we were going to get it on the trailer, the forklift couldn't even pick it up. We ended up coming back with a semi and trailer and had it loaded for 50 bucks. We had many more adventures and I loved to see this video.
Landoll trailers sure are nice! When you guys got to the door of your shop with the lathe and it was too wide I laughed my ass off thinking about Baily when he tries to bring a stick thru the door that is too long and hits it 3 or 4 times before he gets it turned to come in. Cincinnati Lathe (the big CL logo on the ram) made the Cintimill. They were originally Fosdick who were famous for drills. By the time the Cintimills were made Cincinnati Lathe was a division of "The Mill" which was Cincinnati Milling Machine and later Cincinnati Millacron.

What a difference in shops, yours clean and bright, the one you got the machines from dark and dirty.
The Radial Arm and lathe are pretty sweet. That trailer was cool... good to get them moved with no accidents or issues. Also good to see them in a home where they will be better taken care of. Thanks John for the vid

You're going to love the old Clausing once she's cleaned up. It's a very solid machine, very reliable!
Hey John you got a great Clausing Colechester lathe. I have logged many hours on that model of lathe but one thing you will have to get used to is it's a left hand apron in it. You can also turn worm threads on it witch is a great feature. It has an oiling pump system on it and a pressure oiling system on the apron too If you need help figuring out something on that lathe it let me know I've used that model for years lol. Great video!

Moving some serious weight there. When they moved my Supermax mill (3000 pounds more or less) they were able to lift it into my garage with a long boom mounted to the forks of the fork lift. (Good thing, because the forklift was too tall to get in under the lintel.) We had to flop the head on the mill horizontal as well.

It's incredible how well you are doing,congratulations. I started similar shop 8 years ago ( I sepcialized in a very small and precise parts ) but I do not have third of themachines you own and right now I'm thinking about closing.
NEW TOYS :D I am excited to get my new-to-me old myford ml7 til weekend. A totally different scale to what you have of course, but still lots of joy and anticipation!
John - I was wondering if you could do a series on the machines you have and what they are used for. It seems like you have some machines that can do the same things but have other capabilities that the other machines don't. I'm interested in why you choose certain machines to do certain jobs.

Lathe Leveling... a one week or more project. Larger equipment will take some time to settle in, especially when disturbed. Level, wait 24 hours check it again, repeat daily until the level stabilizes. Don't forget to run the machine to allow it to "rumble" in while doing leveling process. You may also discover along the way that the concrete the gear is sitting on might change, too.
Enjoyed the video... I just recently purchased a Kitamura mycenter 5 and am still trying to locate a forklift that will pick the 22000 # machine up to put it in my shop. Glad to see old iron put back to good use.

Wow I just have to say, as a manual machinist, you got some nice machines. Now lets just hope that they are in decent condition!
That lathe could sit in a twist forever and not take a permanent set. Cast iron doesn't work that way.
You need a precision level. .0005/12 or better, a machinist level is not good enough. Level both ends using 4 of the leveling screws. I put the level right on the carriage such as on the cross slide surface. Once you have both ends level, run the carriage the length of the bed. There should be no twist. You may have to use the other leveling screws to get it perfect.
Now turn the level 90 degrees and measure if the bed has a hump or belly. You will use the other 2 or 4 leveling screws to correct this. You don't have a center support so it may be tough to get this right. Get it the best you can. You might have to lag it to the floor and pull it down if it's really worn.
The twist is the most important factor. Take a test cut on a 3 x 12ish bar and measure for taper. If the headstock is bolted to a flat surface, you can loosen the bolts and bump it into alignment. If the headstock sits on the V ways you can't do anything without scraping the mating surfaces.
Then you need to line up the tailstock to the spindle. That's pretty easy.

lathe leveling tip: use your camera and phone to check your level when working on the feet of the lathe. cheers.
Awesome lathe! I went and looked at a 15x50 a few weeks back but passed on it because of too many issues. Magnetic brake wasn't functional, oil pump idler was missing, cross slide screw needed replaced. The parts were all really expensive. Good luck with it. I'd still like to find one in decent shape.

Do you plan to disassemble the machines as part of the clean-up? Maybe check for wear/tolerances/etc? If so, I'd like to see that.
Colchester lathe is so good, its imo one of the best machines you can get . for a vertikal mill i would say Pedersen then Bridgeport . looking good :D

Awesome machinery acquired there, great expansion to anyones setup. I'd be in heaven. I'd like to see the leveling of the Lathe for future reference if i ever got one.

Guys that rig loads and move that sort of stuff are very skilled. one wrong placement of a sling or chain and its a lot of steel that is going over.'
Is great to see that some older gear is going to get some more use, it will last you well.

hell yeah that's a big lathe, but check out the ones that make barrels for our battleships/destroyers... 4-5' swing and 30'+ beds.... yikes...
If you want to be shocked, look at how these massive lathes were made in WWI or WWII - concrete!

Hi John did you check the travel distance on the Bridgeport? There are a lot of variances in mills but I remember looking for one and the 48" table and the 42" table both travel the same distance 30" to 31" You just get a smaller work area on the 42". Check and see if it holds true.

Nice looking machines. Were these all from an auction or a shop closing down, if so what did this end up costing you? Clearly a big investment, but hopefully one that pays off in increased capacity.

Why didn't you lower the head on the radial drill press ?
While I was watching, I was scanning the structural layout of your shop... It seems to me that, it doesn't lend itself well for an "Overhead Crane" (OH). You have a support column in the middle of the building, which would prevent you from moving equipment and/or materials with an OH... The best you could do, in that situation, would be to build Jib Cranes, but that would be Slow and laborious... Just thinkin... Placing and leveling all of your new equipment would be sooooo much easier if you had an OH... Something to think on for the future... Perhaps you could look into having the build re-engineered to remove that support column... but that could be very costly... You'd need a lot of side wall support, to give an OH crane a straight run from front to back...
I use a two tonne gantry crane with adjustable height for my shop. It is cheaper and more portable eg if you want to lift something outside of the building, just roll it there.

That's a strong 4x4 to hold up a one ton mill. I'll keep that tip in mind though. Step head mill=best head mill. Is that a 36" table or a 30"?
In 1999, they moved the Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina. At one point they supported the 5000 ton 200ft tall structure with oak cribbing. They used a lot of it but it is still amazing that they held it up with wood.
almost every house move involves timber cribbing supporting the whole structure at some stage

Those movers sure knew what they were doing. The axle moving on that trailer was slick. :-)
I cringed when I saw them lifting the Cintimill and the radial drill from below. They could have tipped over and be damaged beyond repair that way. The manuals recommend slinging and lifting from the top, like a crane.
That would be after you get it through the door. :-)

I'm yet to see a metric street sign in the US. They're using it more in engineering, but still nothing with the public except for food and beverage labels.
