Love those Kitchen Sink reprints - gorgeous covers and interior coloring while it lasted. 1983? I was buying these at thirteen years old? The 3-D issue is incredible.

DC did the best job of reprinting these strips. The Spirit Archives.

Collected all of those as DC released them. Agree but wish the book dimensions were bigger, though

@@jonanjello Definitely. Like if they were the size of the Kitchen Sink Press reprints.

One of the best characters in comics by possibly the greatest innovator the medium has ever seen. Kitchen Sink did an excellent job with these reprints (87 issues in total). Cat Yronwode's informative columns and later Eisner's contributions give you lots of background on the making of the strip. Crumb himself sent a letter in praising the book and the colour choice in one of the early issues.

@@PaquiChipSkylar I completely agree. It's created and (mostly) written and drawn by Will Eisner, so it's hardly surprising.

This was my first Will Eisner comic books I had, it’s still affordable way to see and read some of the best Spirit art and stories . All the issues I had I think has new artwork on the covers

I love the kayfabe subtext for those following, they have broken up and are setting off on to their own thing due to the previous episode.

I purchased all the KS spirits in the 80s. I loved them! now I think I’ll go back and read them.

Great job as solo host! There’s no denying that the banter between you and Jim is a big part of what I enjoy about your guys’ videos, but I still enjoyed this one plenty, very informative.

I can remember buying that Spirit 1 around the same time as Red Circle’s Black Hood 1, American Flagg 1 and Eagle’s Judge Dredd 1; they were all out around the end of summer ‘83. When I tried to complete a run of this series several years back (it ran til #87), it was so hard filling in the later issues, esp out in the wild. I think now, with Lone Star, eBay, etc being so dominant in online sales, you could probably piece together all 87 issues within an hour or two.
Your mention of using the original printed pages stops fairly early in the run, as they started using the computer coloring that was available at the time. (IIRC Peter Poplaski was Kitchen Sink’s staff colorist.) On that Baxter paper stock, I think the coloring overpowered artwork that was meant to be done by 1946 color processing.

I have the first few issues of these books. Eisner’s superb Story telling majorly influenced me to want to write and create my own stories. It was great meeting you guys at Columbus CXC! Looking forward to seeing what you have up your sleeves next! How you both break down different aspects of the books you review, reveals things that I wouldn’t have even thought about, so thank you for this valuable resource and killer stories you both create! Rock on! 🤘🤓🤘

THAT GOODMAN BEAVER AD! That was how I found out Kurtzman and Elder had even DONE stuff other than Mad. (I was 14)
I loved this book. Gotta say tho I liked the new color a lot more than you do. I just recently got 1-35 of this series on Ebay on a nostalgia urge so cool you did this. Do more issues!

    Great video!
I love the coloring of the covers on this entire series. Poplaski has incredible color sense. I like the color covers so much I reached out to Denis Kitchen to find out what the secret was. He said: Pete Poplaski. While you don't like the color inside the comic, but I really dig it. It is better in later issues, but I love how it looks. I don't think it was blue line process. They talk about how it was done in one of the other issues, not sure which one. I was a grey plate with the color overlayed, but I don't know how they got the color separations.
Speaking of proportions, you have commented in other videos about Liefeld's long leg proportion and now Eisner's long torso tendencies. Do you think that those choices reflect the artist's own proportion? I am a dude with a long torso and short limbs and that is how I default draw my figures. I have to intentionally stretch those limbs when I draw. I wonder if this is an actual thing, y'know.
