STORYLINE :
The German Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus on Monday.
His visit was aimed at stressing the importance of recognising Lebanon's sovereignty if Damascus wants to remove itself from international isolation.
Steinmeier, fresh from talks in Lebanon, met with his counterpart Walid Muallem, the Syrian Foreign Minister along with other officials.
A meeting between Steinmeier and Syrian President Bashar Assad is also scheduled.
In August, Steinmeier cancelled a trip to Damascus at the last minute to protest an anti-Israel speech by Assad.
