  • This is a review of the TransIt Flatbed 2 bike rack available from Performance.
    I don't work for Performance and I don't get paid to do these videos. I just really appreciate a good value when I find one and like to share it with people!

    Clint, I ended up buying it and am very happy so far. I had a little rocking side to side on rough roads but made some adjustments and it is great now. I also like that you can take off the outside or inside wheel holders if you prefer and essentially make it a one bike rack. I even removed one of the frame holder hooks.I had to do that to get it in my garage last night. I also always lock the hook frame holders to deter them from slipping up. It is light and stores really compact in my garage. Thanks again!!!

    I've been looking at various flatbed bike racks and couldn't decide with brand to buy. Since I've been watching your videos, I bought the Transit based on your recommendation. If it's good enough for you, it's good enough for me. As a side bar, I really appriciate your video. Very information and you do a good job explaining the topic. Well done.

    Great review! your channel has popped up a lot recently with research I've been doing. With this review you got yourself a new subscriber. Very in depth and answered a lot of the questions I have.

    @NYSt8ofMiNd02, the Stick Up is the rack I was using (a buddy's rack) when my bike fell off. The design is such that the bike could move forward, which is what mine did. Perhaps he just didn't secure it right, which is a good possibility. But I like the TransIt better. It may take a little bit more time to adjust to bikes of different wheel bases, but it seems more secure and has more adjustability (so handle bars and saddles don't touch).

    That rack is MUCH cheaper than similar style racks! I like the tray racks due to the fact that there is less contact with the frame as well therefore less of a chance of scratching it. Thanks once again for a great video.

    @EWColaCanada, I do leave the rack on 24/7. I'm transporting a bike every day or every other day during the week so it wouldn't be practical to keep taking it on and off.

    i have this rack as well...but it is short on design. it doesn't complelty fold up for storage...it could, but appearently they didn't think that was an important feature. I also had a lot of difficulty mounting a second bike. I had a road bike and a mountain bike and with MB's lower main bar, the hold down bars of the rack didn't work. If I used the short hold down bar below the other hold down bar, the top hold down bar, which has a longer reach, wasn't short enough to make contact with the road bikes cross bar. I actually ended up drilling out the bolt that holds the vertical bar, in the lock mechenizum and replacing it with a nut and bolt so I could adjust the bar up and down through the locking mechenizum. Now it works fine. With a lilttle more thought on the design side, it would be a perfect rack.

    Just wanted to say Thanks for the review. This helped me with my purchase decision. I got one on sale at Performance Bikes for only $128. It's a great rack for 700C tires. Strange though the straps for the tires are on the different side of what is shown in your video and I can't seem to strap them. Will check with Performance Bikes to see if I did something wrong.

    Wow awesome. I got the trekker which is similar but lacks the top tube lock mechanism. I'm thinking of getting this one next. Great review thank u!

    Great video thanks for the product insight. One concern I have is that when you have 2 bikes racked, the tail lights are obscured. Living in S Florida there are a lot of poor drivers..other than that it looks like the right way to go!

    Good review, thanks! How heavy is that rack? I've got an old Performance 3 bike hitch version, with the extending bars, (no tray) and it is heavy as sin. Since I take it off from time to time, it's a pain to drag from the garage. I have been thinking of getting an alum one but very expensive.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  10 лет назад

      nesdog1122 , the rack is not very heavy. I'd say around 40 lbs (wild guess). It's quite a bit lighter than my Yakima Holdup that I had before. I have the 4 bike version of the Performance rack and it weighs a TON. I can lift the 2-bike version with one hand easily.

    Thanks for the review. If you were to use this on an SUV, will you be able to mount a bike on the inside w/ say a 29" bar w/o hitting the rear glass?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  10 лет назад +2

      ***** , we have the 4 bike version of this rack for our Honda CRV and the handlebar of the bike closest to the vehicle does NOT touch the glass. You should be fine.

    Great Review! Is this still your rack of choice? I'm looking into platform style racks right now and this seems great, especially after your comments.
    Is there an aluminum version?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  10 лет назад

      Yep, still my rack and it's working great. I don't think there is an aluminum version but the 2 bike isn't heavy at all. Much lighter than my previous Yakima.

    Hi Clint, have you used this with carbon frame bikes? Seems like it would be safe to use?

  • @nealsphoto1
    @nealsphoto1 11 лет назад

    make sure you use the wheel straps and do not push down too hard with the arm. The reason is, the ratchets are not that great and they will slide up when you are driving (especially if you had compressed your suspension by pushing down to hard).
    Lesson learned, the hard way

    Hi Clint, love your videos. Have you used this rack with road bikes as well? Any issues with them and the wide wheel trays and the road bikes moving a lot?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  10 лет назад

      Kevin Newman , yes, I use the rack with my road bike and my cyclocross bike. It works great. You just adjust the trays in or out so the bike doesn't move back and forth. The road bike is very solid and doesn't move around.

    you may have newer reviews but didn't see other rack. I have a Mercedes E350 and I don't want to spend the money to install a factory roof rack nor add a hitch... I've been looking at various options and stumbled across the SeaSuckers.... made in Florida of all places... Have you heard of them? I think you should do a review on them... They look awesome and so flexible... really state of the art shit... LOL.

      +Dick Tchairdjian I had my doubts about seasuckers when I first saw them but the more I learn about them the more I'm confident that they can be a really good option.

    Great review. 2 questions... 1) Do you think it will properly secure a woman's beach cruiser? 2) I need a rack that is 2 bike with the 2 bike extension (total 4 bikes). Do you know if Performance Transit make a 2 Bike to 4 bike add on? Thanks.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  9 лет назад

      RogerThat99 As long as the top tube is somewhat normal (not sloped too steeply like a traditional woman's bike) then it should work. If it has a very steep slope then you'll need a rack that holds the front tire instead. Performance doesn't make an add-on, but they do make a 4-bike rack. I also have one. They require a 2" hitch receiver which cannot be put on a sedan, but rather a truck or SUV. The 4-bike rack is heavy so it takes some muscle to move it around.

    Hey Clint, just a quick question regarding the 4-bike rack that you have for your SUV. Is the the 4-bike rack able to break down and become a 2-bike rack also? Thanks in advance for your help. Love your videos!

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  9 лет назад

      No, the 4-bike cannot be converted into a 2-bike. And it is HEAVY! But it works great for the family.

    What's the bolt/thread that's used? I lost mine and Performance doesn't carry replacements nor know the answer to the thread size.

    Hey Clint, I just found you the other day while searching how to add stans fluid to my tires. Great vids man! I do have a question about this rack. Does it fold down to the left or right enabling the hatch to open. I have an suv and would like to be able to get in the back without bikes on. Also, have you seen or heard how well the 2 in adapter works? I bought a similar model and returned it because the adapter was plastic and not very durable, the whole rack sunk badly.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  10 лет назад +1

      Keith Hammers , the bar that holds the bikes up does fold down so you can open a hatch. It folds back (away from the vehicle) so you don't want to leave it down while driving. You just need to make sure you put the pin back in before driving with a bike. The 2" adapter is heavy-duty steel. I used it on our SUV once or twice and it's very solid. It actually bolts onto the rack. Hope this helps!

      @keithhammers7404 10 лет назад +1

      Yes, thanks a lot. Looks like they have a huge discount going on right now at performance so it looks like I am heading down there soon. This saves me a lot of money because I just about purchased the Thule or 1up that are more than double the price.

  • @nesdog1122

    I picked up this rack based on your review and then got a new car, Honda CR-V. Need to put a hitch on it. Are you okay with the 1-1/4 rather than a 2" as far as stability and rocking motion? I'd rather stay with smaller to avoid having to add the bulky 2" adapter to the rack. However I have read that some hitches require an extra strap on tray style racks.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  9 лет назад

      Absolutely. With 2 bikes it's fine. All hitch racks move around a bit, even my Yakima Holdup (actually it moved around more than the TransIt).

    thanks for the review Clint. Do you think a 29x3inch tire will fit in the trays?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  10 лет назад

      travis good, I measured the width of the space in the wheel trays at just slightly less than 2.75". 29er tires fit fine, but a 3" wide tire will not fit.

    Hey Clint, can you give an update on this rack? I'm looking at getting one soon and was wondering about the durability and anything else worth mentioning. Thanks.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  10 лет назад

      trevormtb , so far so good! I've had no issues at all with the rack. The only complaint is that there is a good amount of friction to slide the hooks up and down and it's sometimes hard to do with one had. I'm going to spray some GT-85 on the tubes and see if that helps. Otherwise, it's holding up very well.

  • @KarplusWarehouseInc

    Hi Clint, you think any chance there will be a failure on the sliding lock with key that secures the top tube? If in case there is, can you get the bike out of the rack? Thanks

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  8 лет назад

      +Karplus Warehouse, Inc. I guess any type of failure is possible but I don't think that's a likely scenario. In all my years of using this rack I never had that issue. If it ever does happen I suppose you could try to get the front wheel off but it won't be easy..

  • @RatanakTevy
    @RatanakTevy 6 лет назад

    Does the top support arm that goes over the frame have to be push down really hard? I have a similar one to yours, but without the clicking locking mechanism. It fell off at a low speed. Could it be because I didn't push it down hard enough?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  5 лет назад

      No, just a firm pressure on the top to you but nothing crazy. You may have had a tire lose pressure or he may have had the bike move forward and the sloping top tube caused there to be a gap between the alarm and the top tube.

  • @jasonyoung9220

    Clint, Very curious about how much dirt builds up when traveling on dirt or gravel roads. I live in MT, and all the best rides require 10 or more miles of non-paved roads. I still tear my bike down and load it in the car which doesn't impress my wife at all. Any info is appreciated.

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  10 лет назад

      Jason Young, I assume you mean dirt getting on the bikes? I've driven on dry and dusty forest roads and you do get a light coating of dust on the bike. I definitely don't think it's harmful, but with a hitch rack your bike isn't protected as much from dirt as it would be with a roof rack.

    • @jasonyoung9220
      @jasonyoung9220 10 лет назад

      Yes, that is what I was looking for. I am always concerned about the drivetrain, bearings, etc. But I don't think twice about getting my bikes dirty when I'm riding! Seems a bit pointless in the scheme of things. Thanks.

    On city bus racks they use a bar that clamps over the front tire. What if your bike has fenders like a cruiser?

    • @ClintGibbs
      @ClintGibbs  8 лет назад

      With this rack you'd be fine. The kind of goes over the front wheel, unless you can get it under the fender and over the tire, I don't think you'd be able to use that style.

    • @robertclark4929
      @robertclark4929 8 лет назад

      +Clint Gibbs I have my own hitch rack. Watching some of those bus videos they never show a regular bike with fenders.
