Sophia was 75 years old here. She is of grandmother age. She reminds me of the grandma next door, that every child would adore. She has that twinkle in her eye, joyfull, warm and inviting, with that big bold friendly smile. It was a compliment to her in so many ways, that's what I meant by my post.
The word "sensational" was occasionally used to describe the best who rose to prominence around the turn of the century. And it definitely applied to Sophie Tucker. Like Sammy Davis Junior, she was the consummate all around entertainer, and as charismatic as they came.
Imagine you're a teenager in 1963 looking at this lineup (for the January 13 episode): the Cypress Garderns Water Skiers, the Flying Alexanders (a trapeze act), the Cuban Brigade Band, Con Conwally (with his balancing knives act), Robert Goulet, Brenda Lee and Sophie Tucker. He/she would leave the living room saying: "Call me when Brenda Lee comes on."
what's your point? you think only teens watched the show? well..the majority of the viewers were as always with these type of variety shows .....once big on the networks...adults and not teens....so they were not put together for teens... a far more intelligent comment would be.."imagine you were a typical viewer ready to watch the ed sullivan show and this terrific lineup of guests were ahead!"
Awww, this was wonderful! Filmed live from the Miami Beach Convention Hall on the occasion of Sophie's 75th birthday. What a wonderful performance!
Thank you for sharing. I thought she about 76 here, I was off by a year. 😊
@@that70sgirl90 That was an excellent guess though!
@@TomElvisSmith ... thank you! 😊
Didn’t appreciate her when I was a kid in ‘63 watching her on Ed Sullivan. But I appreciate it now! Thank you! Really enjoyed it.
She's Adorable... just like the grandma next door! Thank you for sharing ! 💖

“It was also done by one of our favorite American groups, Sophie Tucker”.-Paul McCartney, Royal Variety Performance, 1963
Also said during one of their Ed Sullivan appearances in 1964 🙂

Nothing wrong with liking Brenda Lee. She was/is a terrific talent, also.
Bette milder is the heir. Bette even named her daughter Sophie after Sophie tucker.
Always holding the handkerchief as a prop .
Anyone know the venue? Clearly not the Sullivan Theatre.
She's really not singing but talking through the song like in Rex Harrison in "My Fair Lady."
She didn’t sing she spoke the words . She must have been a heavy smoker
She had lung cancer before she died
so sad she was already out of breath . .....she is struggling .
Rodney Dangerfield in drag.
Just about😄
