Russia: Tolmachevy Sisters - Shine live at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 First Semi-Final -
As an unbiased Australian who judges these contestants on their songs and talent ALONE, I can honestly say that these two girls gave one of the best performances of the whole competition. They deserved more respect than what they got...
I love this song! Still sing it after four years. It was a tough competition though, any other year it would have had a better chance
Nitzan Shepher Yes. This has remained enlightening for me too.
They could have competed for a different country? But they chose to stand with Russia and faced the consequences of it
@@jamesshone1677 Yes, they could have competed for a different country, but chose a non-fascistic one. Good choice.
Incredible performance... So sweet singing, almost studio version...
Well done Russia xx
better than the studio version !
I was in the crowd and was so disgusted by how people treated this girl - most of the crowd would shout (in a negative way) everytime the girls was mentioned or came on stage ... I get that people aren't liking the Russian government - but srsly? It isn't the girls fault and they were amazing, so they should have been acknowledged for their music instead of for their country
Exactly. They were really hated in the final because of their government. They were only 17 in this and it gives me goosebumps even a year later how amazing their voices are.
***** TOLPA-concourse,drove))
I couldn't have put it better myself, so thank you!! ☺
***** We call this 'mob mentality'- the crowd is unlikely to boo a state or person on its own, but if enough people do it, everyone else follows.
Agree
People should know the difference between the people in Russia and the government.
+BLU If there would be such a big difference, those people would kick that goverment out like Ukrainians did, or at least vote for others... Just sayin'
+Ramūnas Padriezas Wow you such a genoius!! No one ever thought in that...
YES BUT ITS THE GOVERNMENT WHO CHOOSE THE SINGER WHO CHOOSE WHERE THE POINT OF RUSSIA GO, YES BECAUSE ITS NOT THE RUSSIAN ¨PEOPLE WHO VOTE FOR EUROVISION IN RUSSIA ITS POUTINE ! So yes at eurovision russia in all is form its the goverment that all
Ramūnas Padriezas "or at least vote for others"
Even though it SEEMS you can vote, it is all corrupt.
Who votes for this goverment? us out of Russia?
They're NOT a member of Russian army.. So, stop disliking.
Russian people love their army and proud of it so much:) Our army defends us perfectly!!!

You know, I think people have the right to express their point of view if they feel a country is doing something wrong, but educated people know *when* it's appropriate or not to do that. This is not the Russian government performing here, it's two beautiful girls giving it all in the name of their country and not necessarily supporting or pardoning what its government does. With that being said, excellent job, girls! Beautiful song and masterful performance! I'm glad that this was what ultimately reflected in the voting!! Love to them from a Spaniard living in the United States. :)
Grasias Espaʼnola)))
"not necessarily supporting what its government is doing"

@@acdeeiprrt What about the lyrics? They're about as wholesomely generic as they get.

Russia always has amazingly-staged performances. Such a delight for the eyes!
It's a shame that Eurovision is not a song contest anymore...
True
@@alexandremarino2003a bit late?
I'm American and this song is probably my favorite from this year's Eurovision. I find it to be the most interesting, musically speaking. I'm a sucker for two part harmony. You have to realize that people are not physical manifestations of their governments. As an American I can relate, because my government doesn't do a single thing that I want it to. If I had it my way, my country would be very different. I think for everyone else it's probably the same.
Haha the melody of it is just like an usual Russian pop song. But it still sounds fuckin' amazing to this day. Love it!
Tho my favorite from 2014 was Latvia :)
The person who write the music and the lyrics of this song is a Greece not Russian !
@@vickshhh8897 Well, there are two authors of music and three authors of lyrics. The music is written by Kirkorov and Kontopoulos (he's Greek), but Kirkorov is a Russian singer, though he's Bulgarian by nationality. Anyway, he has been living in Russia for most of his life. And I don't see any Russian and Greek authors between authors of Lyrics:)
Musically it's great, but the lyrics make it impossible to separate them from putin's imperialist ambitions
Europeans are tolerant because they have voted a bearded gay dude to win? They just booed at two 17 years old singers just because they were Russians.Don't make me laugh...
Chris Flegg
Eurovision winners hardly ever become successful. Their flame sizzles after a year. I haven't heard anything from Alexander Ryback, Loreen, the molitva girl. The only two that made world wide success are Abba and Celine Dion. Emilie from Denmark career was getting so bad she had to sexualize herself and even that failed.
Booing two 17 year old twins because of what their PM said is extremely immature and totally out of place. I honestly didn't like the song but i commend them for keeping a brave face infront all those boo's.
not all Europeans...

Wow, first time I've ever heard the audience boo when an act went through to the final. Poor girls, it's not on them personally.

Mary0Kule

Mary0Kule never mine. You actualy dont understand what i m talking about.
I voted 5 times for this song. :P Love from Greece!
Shame on you Europe!!
The best song, and person won. Western Europe know best, evidently.
If for you the best person won vote for PERSONVISION. not for Eurovision. :D The only thing that western Europe knows is to make Propaganda. :D And that i know it from the first hand, that Greeks work 16 hours a day and you in western Europe think that Greeks are lazy cause your idiot governments feed you propaganda all the day. ;=) So i am happy with Eastern Europe, cause they are humans not zombies. :D
I disagree, I understand from your perspective that could be the case, I'm Irish, so I don't see that here, our government is awful, and etc. but people choose to believe what they want, in my opinion, the best song was Hungary... I loved it... but because eurovision is normally political, i think the right politics came through... Russia's song was good, but it's hard to accept their talent when Russia is so anti-homosexuality... I always thought Ireland was really retrogressive, but it's not in comparison.
Irish people love the Greeks. I for one have never heard any bad 'propaganda' ... I study sociology here, so society is my forte and I don't think you're right about that, however, if that's how you feel, I hope this comment restores your faith in Western Europe. At the end of the day, don't we all just want equality for everyone? So I'm glad Conchita won, because it's a win for the LGBTQ community. :) I hope I've made my point better this time :) Sorry if any offence was caused :)
Victoria Veronica Phillips Ahhh hmmmm it isn't fair to delete or edit your comment after that i answer you, you know!!
Exactly ...shame ...they was good enough to be on the top >_> αλλά για να το παραδεχτούμε ...
I hope when they sing "no one's going to bring me down" they mean it, I hope the booing didnt make them feel too bad. They don't deserve to be jeered, it wasn't their fault what their country done
western countries have done worst
No. They literally cried so so much after the Grand final.

This is a catchy song with real meaning. Lovely words. Lovely vocals and a strong entry from Russia in 2014. Good placing also. I was in the audience in Copenhagen and was shocked at the way some behaved. I spoke to one person making hateful comments to rebuke their comments. I am from the UK.
It is good that some people understand, if a person from Russia, it does not mean that person is bad. I remember how five years ago I was sitting and rooting for our girls(I am from Russia) When I was 12 years old, and I did not understand why our girls were not loved and insulted. We, the people of this country, are not to blame for what the government is doing, and especially these two beautiful girls. Thank you that you really understand all setratio. I wish you luck)
Greetings from us, the people with a balalaika and a bear :D
Are you kidding me? This beautiful girls don't deserve to be booed just because of Vladimir Putin ·_· This was outstanding, and the lyrics? "Telling the world to show some love" or something like that. Come on! This should even win.
Exactly !! I've been thinking about what happened and i'm still sad about it ! Europe is childish! All because their russia?!
I think it got booed because it got through when better songs didn't in my opinion, it shouldn't be in the final
I think the fact that russia qualified rubbed people the wrong way, and that's why they're booing. It has nothing to do wth the perfomance or the girls, cause no one booed when they performed.
You fell for the propaganda.
Living on the edge
Closer to the crime
Cross the line a step at a time
Now maybe there's a place
Maybe there's a time
Maybe there's a day you'll be mine
The double meaning is so obvious
Aged well
Two beautiful girls with a very nice song and a very cute stage performance, DID NOT DESERVE ALL THAT BUUUUUUUU in a SONG CONTEST!!!
Richard Batt
I remember when this was on the Eurovision, I loved it, as a little Irish girl ^-^
Two years later, I've come back, and I can't believe how amazing it actually is.
Tom Stanley Yes, I agree--I completely disagree with that law, but it was unfair for people to take it out on these girls in the Eurovision.

Absolutely! Great song, such a pity they got such a backlash
This. Btw it’s 9 years. This was 2014 and now its 2023
Six years later and I still believe they should've won. Great song, great performance, great voices.
What pity that this year Russia is going to be penalized, for obvious reasons, because it is a very beautiful and sticky ballad.

I thought the ESC is a festival which represents peace, harmony, tolerance, acceptance, democracy and its values like freedom of expression. Because of the comments taken here I can see, the western propaganda worked very well. Poor mankind.
In my opinion the russian act was one of the best this evening - not the best but still very good.
A mind-blowing performance. It's like the greatest theme from an as yet unmade Bond film. The staging alone is astonishingly technically exacting and they're singing phonetically in a foreign language. They look like goddesses. Any other year this would have walked it. Brava.
Absolutely the best song of Eurovision ; o

I really felt for these girls on Saturday night, they didn't deserve the reaction they got. It's a good song and they gave a good performance. It's not their fault the rest of Europe is too pig ignorant to see beyond the ends of their noses.

Great performance. They were singing so nicely, despite the fact that they were booed at. One should be very strong to be able to sing so well in such conditions. I think that people who were booing them were jealous of the girls' talent and beauty.
Booing because of the support of russian imperialism. "Living on the edge / Closer to the crime / Cross the line a step at a time / Maybe there's a place / Maybe there's a time / Maybe there's a day you'll be mine"
I can't believe how many people don't understand that a Eurovision entry and it's country may be a little different in the way of views. I seriously thought we were better than this. Leave the poor girls alone.
You sir/miss deserve my like. Here you go
I really hope that Russia DOES NOT withdraw next year. The fact that the russian televoters gave Austria 8 pts means something. I believe the russian people are longing for other things than their government.
And, I think the booing was very unfortunate.
1) Austria got 5 points from Russia 2) Don't tell me you are one of those who believes that homosexuality is forbidden in Russia. We have them all over our show-business... Besides the contest was about the SONGS and these girls are 17 years old.. so it IS unfortunate and probably Russia should withdraw from this disgrace.. 3) what do you mean "longing for other things"?
1. yes, but that was because of the jury. the televotes placed austria 3rd. 2. I don't. 3. well maybe more freedom? we have to ask the russian people themselves.
en dag I am Russian and have plenty of lesbians among my friends :D Do not trust all this antiRussian rhetorics these days.. The world has gone mad :(

Viz12345 No, they dont sing for Putin. They sing for Russia.
I'm Venezuelan, and when and when a venezuelan represents our country in any kind of event, he does it for Venezuela, and represeting all venezuelans, not for Nicolás Maduro or his government. Putin's politics are only his politics, and the ones of HIS government.
These girls where born in Russia, raised in Russia, and are singing for every russian, even gay russians or the ones opposing Putin. They deserve to be treated like every other artist who competes to earn a victory for their country in any non-political event.
Booing them just for the plain fact of being Russian shows you bear as much intolerance as Putin's government shows every day regarding gay rights and/or human rights.
Luis Maldonado"Booing them just for the plain fact of being Russian shows you bear as much intolerance as Putin's government shows every day regarding gay rights and/or human rights."

No one booed when they performed, only when they got through to the finals so I don't think people were booing at THEM, but at the fact that russia qualified.

P.S.Fokas did a great job and the song was actually written by a Greek songwriter who's quite famous here in Greece but I can't remember his name :P
A song that I learned for my stepfather. Then I did not know English at all. (after that I was enrolled in English courses)
He replaced my father, he always loved me like his own daughter, raised me. He was the best friend of my own father and promised him that he would not leave me and my mother. My father was killed in a fight in a cafe, there were people armed with guns and knives. My stepfather also suffered, he doesn't have his right hand, he was treated for a long time in the hospital, but even now (19 years have passed), he doesn't forget about his promise. He is my father.
I am writing this now because today, August 18th, he died from the coronavirus. Dad I love you

I feel sorry for this talented girls to represent Russia in this times... Depending on everything around Ukraine and also Conchita Wurst reduces their chances to win or get a top result. Their appearance looks so good and they are great singers, so I actually hope that people will recoginze that ESC actually is a song contest, nothing else.
Peace! :)
It was a great performance. They didn't deserve boos. It's not their fault.
Poor girls
You clearly have not followed the news? The aggressor Russia has attacked and invaded Ukraine!!!
You can be pretty sure Russia won’t be invited in any European contest for the next 100 years.

Seriously, whoever boo'ed at these girls, you have absolutely no right to call yourself a Eurovision fan
Guys, these are only two 17 year old girls. They can't be blamed for the actions of their country, they are innocent, as are 95% of the Russian citizens. The twins made friends with Mariya Yaremchuk, the Ukrainian representative, and had many photos and such together. In an interview after the show, both twins were in tears because of the criticism they received. Europe is the one in the wrong here, it was completely unnecessary to boo like that. Sure Russia hasn't been making any friends lately, but two young girls should not be punished for their government's actions.
I am Russian. I can't understand what my country's actions are. Please, explain!
