- TROY DONOCKLEY is the multi-instrumentalist in Finnish symphonic metal masters NIGHTWISH since 2007. He plays bodhràn, uilleann pipes, tin whistle, bouzouki and guitar! How does it feel to be the ace in their deck, their secret weapon? Backstage at Mediolanum Forum in Milano on December 4th 2018, for Linea Rock, our BARBARA CASERTA had the chance to nicely discuss with Troy his approach to music since the very first instrument he ever played, how his collaboration with Nightwish started in a crucial period of the finnish band’s career and how it became more trenchant in 11 years, during composition and soundwise, especially with mastermind Tuomas…. And was it Troy to change the band or actually the band changed his life forever? And as a multi-instrumentalist is music a much richer language for him someway, like a multidimensional coloured canvas? And how much freedom he has to choose which colour to add to the final opera? How did he live the change between Anette and Floor on vocals? And what if he was able to work with Tarja? The best record so far he has done with Nightwish in his own taste? He also describes the typical day on the road, how the band decides the show’s setlist and usually work on it… and is the tour the most relaxing part of “the job” or otherwise the studio sessions? He also reveals some future plans (also for side project AURI) and the new Nightwish live album in the can… and did Troy have yet the chance to watch Queen’s movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” which on everybody’s lips right now? Click play, enjoy & share!

Troy you make Floor happy, and that makes me happy.
The more I see Troy interviewed, the more impressed I become. He's a fantastic musician, and a really decent human being.
Thanks for a good interview! Troy is such a sweet guy.
He's like a herion addiction for Tommy unfortunately.
@@maxrav1831 Sorry I didn't get it. English isn't my first language but I guess this was quite random.
@@maxrav1831 Yeah, he has poor Tuomas under his spell. Someone needs to rescue Tuomas from this guy.
Troy is both a very talented multi-instrumentalist and such a nice & funny guy.
I enjoy to hear about the love the band mates have for each other! Troy's a very interesting person, too. I'd love to have coffee with him, and ponder aloud.
I’ve watched a few interviews and I must say Barbara is one of the best interviewers out there. It’s not just Q&A like so many do, but more like good conversation between friends. And she always does her research and asks good questions. Hats off.
And Troy is just as lovely as usual 🖤
Folk music is actually my favorite genre.
Nice to have folk music instruments and themes in Nightwish, it adds to the pagan and mystical atmosphere.
"I loved Anette's voice" I do too.
I love their routine before playing a show! lol
not a bad interview and great to see you still out there :)
paul n debbie
Visto live insieme a Midge Ure nel 98 a Pordenone, bel concerto
love Troy rocking his Darwin fish pin!!
awesome. He's a lovely, warm, great fellow Englishman, and musician
Evolution Rocks I don’t. I don’t like Darwin’s hateful ideas about god. He’s a great scientist But about god he’s a pigheaded fool. Also Darwin. whether he likes it or not is a religious idol.
I loved nightwish with Tarja. I loved nightwish with Annette. I love nightwish with Floor. But I have never been happier then when I found out Troy became a permanent member, I'd been hoping he would join the band sense Dark passion play came out.
I just love Troy. Such a nice person and great musician. Love both Auri albums. Folk rock my next best thing after Nightwish. And by the way, I personally feel the same about Tarja. :)
Great news re live album/dvd!
I Love Deep silent complete and Wishmaster too...too sad they couldn't play them in Stuttgart and Paris
oooooh another Auri album?? Yaaaaaas!
11:11 You can tell Marco was involved in the mixing when you hear the bass
Omg he has got to work a banjo into a song or 2 on the next album. My life would be complete at that point.
I'll give Troy a cliche from a movie called "Under Siege":
It's not just a job, it's an adventure.
Overall, great interview! I love how Troy is humble, but yet still keeps pushing himself as a musician, both as a performer and as a writer. He kinda reminds me of Bo Jackson or Jim Brown a bit, with the multifaceted aspect of him playing multiple instruments.
Is another interview going on in the next room? I hear Floor talking :-)
Hi! That comes from the production office, right beside us... Floor wasn't available for interviews in Milano, she had to save her voice for the show! Thanks for the message!
@@BarbaraCaserta hey! Thanks for the nice interview. It's always a joy to see Troy. I met him in Stuttgart as he went by the room where I had an interview with Tuomas and waited for Floor. Troy is adorable and it's wonderful you had the chance to ask him a couple of questions
Troy said Traja never did it for him. So Nightwish fans when the last gig is played and the band are no more and the history is written do you agree with Troy?
Yes, Tarja has a beautiful voice but monotonous. Floors voice can explore many varied techniques, a better fit.
No. All Nightwish is good, but the most emotional and profound Nightwish, is old Nightwish. Its legacy will be eternal.
He's clearly got a bit of a personal vendetta against Tarja. It's a shame, he could have said something to unite and celebrate all of the Nightwish eras. Instead he is just creating more division. Disappointing.
yikes
Who the hell is he to comment about Tarja in such dismissive and disrespectful way?
Can't believe I only just found out about this. He could have at least said, 'I respected her as a good vocalist'. Not very classy. I'm only just realising why Nightwish is so different now ...and it's mostly because of Troy's influence, I think. The excessive folk stuff is getting rather boring and unmoving....dark, heavy , gothic Nightwish is untouchable.
@@luxetveritas9196 I completely agree with you. Not only the new songs are getting folkier, but the old songs are being spiced with pipes everywhere, Nemo for example 🤯
Btw, there are more of Troy's abominable comments about Tarja (whom he never met), listen to this too: ruclips.net/video/CQvxgDaGoIg/видео.html
@@astralromance oh my god. I am FUMING right now. I always assumed Troy was a nice man. How wrong was I. Ironically I always assumed that HE was completely sweet and innocent...but he is far, far from it, to use his own language. I miss the time when Nightwish was just a bunch of lovely Finnish friends from the same hometown. And I say this as a Brit. I'm ashamed of Troy.
@@astralromance yeah, I noticed that too. I hate the way they are ruining the old songs with his pipes and things. It never worked with Nemo, or any of them. And I am someone who loves folk music. He has Tuomas wrapped around his finger, it's so obvious. I am praying for Tuomas to free his mind from the influence of this evil warlock's spell 😅🙏🏻😭
The greatest show on earth is no where near the quality of dark passion play or imaginarium Troy son, don't be silly now.
Everyone has his/her own opinion on that - that's all you comment is as well.
@@tarmotyyri6733 well its not its backed up by the sales as well love. There is a reason DPP and imaginarium outsold their last album.
Ever thought of the influence that alternative channels of getting to listen to their music, like streaming services etc., may have on album sales? Besides, if album sales were the criteria to evaluate the quality of music, then e.g. Madonna & Rihanna would have released 15 times better music than NW so far.
@@tarmotyyri6733 they had all that when imaginarium was released as well.
Not e.g. Apple Music. Even Spotify had only 15M active users in 2014, much less before that, but by 2015 (when EFoMB was released) they had grown to 75M active users. But it still boils down to respecting the opinions/tastes of other people. If Troy thinks EFoMB is their best album, he of anybody else for that matter, has the right to think so. Even you have the right to your opinion about DPP & Imaginaerum, which you spelled wrong by the way.
Endless forms was a horrible album not musically but because it alienated every spiritual fan with the Darwin stuff
I'm Catholic and it didn't alienate me. There is nothing controversial in that album except maybe the lyrics to Weak Fantasy, but that's their opinion and it doesn't really bother me.
Then I am the lucky one who does not care much about lyrics :-) As long as they are not utterly stupid that is :-) But I guess you consider the Darwin stuff utterly stupid and in this case, I understand your view. Depends of course on your definition of "spiritual"
It's too folky and generic, and I say this as someone who loves folk music.
