Double D uses bandages to inflict pain on Ed and Eddy whenever they demonstrate poor manners. His goal is to improve their behavior. After just a short time, it appears that his strategy is working. This clip is from the episode, "My Fair Ed."
This clip can be used to teach the Psychology concept of operant conditioning. More specifically, it teaches positive punishment since an unpleasant stimulus (the removal of the bandage) is applied to decrease a negative behavior (yelling or being rude).
It is interesting to note that this concept is not explained entirely correctly in the clip. Double D explains that his actions serve to remind Ed and Eddy of their manners (a reinforcer for positive behavior) rather than punish them for their negative behavior. Regardless, this clip is an excellent illustration of operant conditioning.

MY DARK THEORY:
In secret Double D’s parents used a very similar operant conditioning method on Double D at home to make him behave ever since he was very young (They were not afraid to use masking tape instead of the bandages occasionally).
As a result of this perminant bald spots and maybe even wounds and perminant scars appeared on his head.
The parents doesn’t wanted to be held responsible for their actions, so they bought numerous hats for Double D instead and taught him to never take them off in the presence of others, hoping that this is going to prevent them from being arrested.
Double D still remembers on the method, but never considered it as abusive or demanding, only as a form of „reminder of proper manners”.
That makes a lot of sense. That's something cool about this show. It leaves a lot up to speculation. Rolf's culture and Double D's hat are the most obvious examples. That's probably why we're still watching Ed, Edd n Eddy 14 years after it ended!
This theory makes so much sense!!!
When I first saw that soup, I was thinking it was oatmeal.
Me too 😅😅😅
Same
I thought that too cause of the thickness
I think everyone did
@@katelynthewhitewerewolf6376 it was probably that hot
The expression of the characters were so good back then so unique
I had to think about it for a second, but this is actually a decent example of what operant conditioning is supposed to be.
The start of this experiment seems more like a version of classical conditioning than operant, but then again, that’s to be expected if you’re teaching someone how to behave properly and take initiative in doing it when they’re so used to making a response as a result of unconditional stimuli (they’re given food anyway by their parents or at school).
Operant is where the result is “It’s time to eat. Let me ring the bell for service.” This is where the proper response (polite manners and behavior) come before the stimuli (the soup). Reward or punishment is given after the response and the subject adjusts accordingly. Classical conditioning is the reverse where the stimuli is presented to the subject and the subject gives a response to it to the point where, if a condition is presented like a bell being rung as the food is served, they can be taught to respond at this condition: “There’s the bell. It’s time to eat.”
Classical conditioning is most common with pets. We feed them, they respond. Operant conditioning is taught to humans. They initiate, they get rewarded or punished.

“Rolf was the Son Of A Shepard, Now Rolf is the POSTERIOR OF DUCK!"
Episodes like these really remind me of how close of a bond ed and eddy share
Sorry for sending an long comment but I just had to get that out of my system. You don't have to read it.
I originally thought they had quite a tight bond back then but in later seasons it seemed more toxic because Ed and Eddy would usually cause trouble, Double D would get the blame placed on him by either Eddy or the other kids when it's obvious he tries to reason with them which almost never works, first with this acting like total jerks and then laugh it off as a joke when it almost got Double D clobbered, then there's the middle name incident at first I actually felt sorry for Eddy since Kevin was being an absolute dick, making Eddy do all those embarrassing things under the threat of revealing his middle name to everyone, only for that square headed jerk to do so anyway, and when Double D tries to cheer Eddy up by revealing his middle name to him, only for Eddy to yell it out to everyone, pretty ungrateful, and then in the movie with the said scam that went to far, Ed and Eddy were not taking the situation they were in as serious as Double D was, kept messing with him every chance they got, and then tricking Double D into thinking they were in Quicksand, which was a horrible prank in it's entirety, making Double D feel like they don't value his friendship and finally snapped and decides to go home and face the wrath of the kids than to deal with messed up antics, like that. And yes, I understand that Eddy had a horrible older brother who tormented him horribly and Ed has a rotten little sister who is spoiled and favored by their parents(mostly the mom) while they neglect and treat him horrible, that still doesn't make the antics they pull any less wrong, I can forgive Ed since he's not all that bright to begin with(he wasn't really a complete idiot, but they really played it up to an 11 later in the series) but not Eddy, sure he started off alright in the first two seasons but became such a jerk, I just wished the Kankers, Sarah, Kevin, and at times Jimmy would get a big dose of karma for their antics.
@@davidcaldwell4916 coo. The movie was really something else.

Anyone else notice that Double D's parents finally replaced the screen door?
Guess they got tired of Ed running through it. 😂
...Why do I get the feeling that Edd's parents really need to be around more.
Because Double's D choice in friends is questionably debatable.
Why do I get a feeling edds parents did the bandage thing to him at some point?
@@The_Beefcake_Cometh That makes the whole thing with the sticky notes even more understandable. “We need our son to obey without us around? Let’s train him to listen to sticky notes.”
@@The_Beefcake_Cometh That could be the reason why he weares his hat, to hide three wounds from the bandages constantly being ripped off. He does it either because it reminds him of this traumatic time or maybe he was getting teased for his weird look, like ed and eddy did in the movie. That also explains his big fear of breaking even the smallest rules, because his parents might do it again. It makes so much sense!
@@Andrej229 it's a possible theory, but edd has had that hat since he was about 5, unless his parents really are that cruel...
