      Pat Bastard and the Spurious 5 To whalers, Moby was a destructive evil monster, but to other sperm whales he was a superhero. If you noticed in the book, Moby Dick didn’t even attack any wailers or whaling ships unless they attacked him or they were attacking other sperm whales. This actually is a true fact about sperm whales. Look up “Mochs Dick”, Who was the true inspiration behind Herman Melville‘s book. He was also a white whale in real life, and he survived over 100 encounters with whales and he even destroyed 20 ships similar to Pequod. He like the fictional character based on him were considered “violent creatures“, especially by the wailers that enjoyed hunting them down including killing young calves just to attract other sperm whales in to protect it so they could harpoon them. makes you think a little bit differently about the book and about Moby doesn’t it? 🐳

    Of all the names they could have given this magnificent beast.

    • @IronMan-tq9ln
      @IronMan-tq9ln 9 лет назад +150

      The name comes from a substance in the whale's head called Spermaceti that was used in candles and as a machine lubricant

      Well, actually, spermaceti was called that because originally, people thought it was the whale's semen. Your 10 year old doesn't need to know that bit.

    • @YD-uq5fi
      @YD-uq5fi 8 лет назад +6

      I really am surprised that killer whales don't see humans as food, particularly since EVERY other creature it encounters IS seen as food (including land creatures like polar bears and moose crossing rivers)... There is literally nothing that doesn't have to worry about orcas (except humans, for some reason)...
      The absence of orca predation on humans really is something surprising. Maybe orcas are smart enough to know that eating humans will lead to bad consequences for the orca species in the long run.....

      +joshua hatfield a sperm whale is the largest toothed whale in the wild they are known to live very deep in the ocean and come to the surface to breath these whales are told to be aggressive but that's false video that say like sperm whale attack are actually false it's actually the whale feels threatened and frash around and the story of Moby dick is no different but they are great

      Someone who truly loved whales would never touch or swim next to one. Have some respect for the animal and leave it alone. In my opinion people who do things like this are just as bad as whale hunters, they both use these beautiful creatures for money and bragging rights.

      As far as i know, whales are more likely to be harassed by boats, than swimmers. Its fine as long as the swimmer doesn't harass or harm the whale in any fashion.

      *****
      actually the head to body ratio is the important difference... for example blue whales have massive brains but also a massive body, we have quite a big brain but not such a big body so our head to body ratio is bigger than that of a whale... humans have the biggest brain in relation to the body of all living animals.

    • @Knapweed
      @Knapweed 9 лет назад +1

      Jack Müller
      Not true. Humans have the same brain to body ratio as a mouse. Small birds and shrews have a greater brain to body ratio than humans.

    • @jackmuller5478
      @jackmuller5478 9 лет назад

      Knapweed
      ups, sorry my last sentence was wrong, ants have the largest brain compared to their body
      but its still a useful way to measure intelligence, even though its quite inaccurate

    • @Knapweed
      @Knapweed 9 лет назад

      Jack Müller
      I think our theories about intelligence need challenging to be honest.
      An amoeba displays similar intelligence and complexity of behaviour to an ant with 250,000 neurons, however, an amoeba is only comprised of one cell. There's no brain or central nervous system or any processing component that we can determine.
      We say humans are intelligent but we really mean society is intelligent and so are we "by association". A human raised without contact with human society would be as dumb as a plank, no language, no symbolism, no history.
      Basically, a Raven, raised under the same circumstances, would run rings around the poor, pathetic creature.

    • @jackmuller5478
      @jackmuller5478 9 лет назад

      Knapweed
      well, when i mean intelligence i dont just mean language, history or symbolism. i also mean the ability to think, self-awereness and learning for example... and i dont think that a human raised without human contact, would not be able to learn, think etc.... so even raised under such conditions a human would still be more intelligent than any other animal imo :)
      btw, i didnt mean to say that the head to body ratio is the way i define or measure intelligence i know its far more complex than that.

    What a tense moment for those divers. I mean Sperm Whales are massive (50 ft or so) they can easily kill a person outright. This whale is very curious as most are but also amazingly docile. Just imagine a huge Leviathan like this getting close to you looking at you and trying to figure out what you are. It's breathtaking, Whales are such fascinating creatures and we humans kill them without any remorse it's disgusting.

    • @SpermCell-Richard
      @SpermCell-Richard 7 лет назад

      Believe me, being a sperm cell is much worse. You don't know if you are going to make it to be a fetus. You have to question when swimming out of the dickhole, if it is some 14 year old loser, or if it is someone having sex. And if it is someone having sex, you have to pray that it is to get pregnant, and once you come up, you are either dead in a condom or tissue, or in a vagina, and still, you are still competing with thousands of other men, who were once your friends, now hoping they die. It is rough. I pity those who stay back, those who do not have the bravery to go over the top, and instead want to stay a sperm cell. And who forgets the nut blast, there is not protecting yourself. You have to know where to be. Trust me kid, you have nothing to worry about.

  • @thebeastofchaos
    @thebeastofchaos 8 лет назад +5

    It looks a bit small, I wonder if it's still a calf? That would explain how it seemed to be curious. I would have been terrified since I understand sperm whales (specially males) can be very aggressive, but this one seems quite friendly. Very few people in the world have this kind of experience, amazing!

      +Andy AM It could be either a young half-grown one, or an adult or near-adult female. The females average only about half the size of the males, and usually do not exceed forty feet.

    Yes, Whales are unique and wonderful creatures that deserve respect. So, sad people still hunt them for profit. You can see this whale is curious of humans. Such a amazing experience caught on video. I can only hope the killing of Whales will stop.

    • @skadrumsandwich7415
      @skadrumsandwich7415 8 лет назад

      why specifically the killing of whales is what everyone freaks their shit about? people kill animals. animals kill animals....cry about it.

    • @jdmdealers1401
      @jdmdealers1401 8 лет назад +1

      Brian Griffin- The point is Sperm Whales are one of the largest warm blooded mammals on our planet that do not hunt for profit. Whales only kill to eat and not for sport, financial gain, or their ego's. Only man go's out of his way to kill things just for their own gain. This also includes killing other humans as well. There will come a day when the killing of whales will not longer be tolerated. It is just a matter of time.

    • @skadrumsandwich7415
      @skadrumsandwich7415 8 лет назад

      +JDM Dealers my point is, do you feel this strongly about people fishing? or hunting deer?

    • @jdmdealers1401
      @jdmdealers1401 8 лет назад +1

      Brian Griffin- Comparing a whale to a fish is foolish. Like a bus to a toy car. Tell me just how much whale meat have you eaten? Deer on land also cannot be compared to tons of ocean whales harvested just for cheap oil products. I have over 100 deer roaming my Alabama ranch with all kinds of other game as well. I do not care to hunt any of them. I go out to a good steak house to get a good meal once a week. I am not into home butchering. I guess I am to domesticated and refined to. I do not see the need kill any animals on my land. I choose to feed them instead. But, I do have relatives who beg me every year to hunt on my land.

    • @skadrumsandwich7415
      @skadrumsandwich7415 8 лет назад

      +JDM Dealers I have eaten whale meat before. there are entire communities who rely on hunting whale for meat to feed themselves and have been doing it for over a thousand years. guess you want them to just change their ways or starve. killing a living thing is killing a living thing. just because you like whales more than fish or think their more important doesn't make it a moral fact that killing whale is wrong. I personally have never hunted in my life. I'm not so self-righteous as to say that makes me "more refined". its just not something I'm interested in doing. there's nothing wrong with hunting and people who do are not less refined than us.
