Hacking a Key System to make a Master key

This video is for Locksmith and lock enthusiasts who would like to see how to backward engineer a master key system to find the most powerful key the Master key. The master key is the highest level of a key in a master key system. This is the key that will work all doors, and this is the key when lost means you need to replace all locks, most keys systems have well over 20 doors, some have thousands of doors.

I am in the middle of rebuilding a key tree at work right now. The building guys barely knew how to change out a cylinder, and then only on a few that they left with a zero bitted code in them, they didn't have a master bitted change key. The only map had what cylinders were where, nothing about the bitting info. Took me pulling apart 3 of the cylinders in the key room taking good notes of all the pins, but got the master, cut new master and control keys and now I am rebuilding a cylinder chart off the keys so I can load up any cylinder by just knowing what key number it needs. Not bad for a guy whose locksmithing career started less than a year ago when I repinned my front door with a crappy pinning kit, but it really got me going.

I've done that only when the previous locksmith has died or retired but limited to a single lock repair. Anything more than that, I make the complex buy a new master key system and rekey everything. Because I have no idea the age of the system and if key control has been compromised. Slum lords will always choose the cheap route and they dont call us anyways.

I take it that slum lords are the landlords who do the absolute minimum for their tenants. I have been to a few places in a decent city. Those places look great from the outside bit inside you have four people sharing a 1 bedroom apartment. Seen alot worse too.

WTF? Was this a unit lock or a building front door lock that was meant to be openable by any of the unit keys?
