  • There were many mixed reactions to Terry Gilliam's completed version of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. Some felt it failed to live up to expectations. Over the course of this three-part video series, examining the project from inception to completion, we'll postulate the ways in which Gilliam's tireless quest for creation may have rendered the very idea of audience 'expectation' irrelevant.

I've got a copy of a former draft of "Defective Detective" if you're interested for a future episode :D

Saw "The Man who killed Don Quixote" when it first came out in theaters. (Feel like that'll be a brag one day.) If this is Gilliam's last film, at least it'll be a high note. But, man, can you IMAGINE if he finishes "Defective Detective" at say, 85? Gilliam might be the kind who dies doing what he loves, hopefully he won't die on-set.

Defective Detective I really hope gets done with a budget that it needs. It's very sad we have as little Gilliam as we do.

Ummm...I kinda don't like talking about Baron Muchausen as failure. Its birth was nothing less then horror and it didn't gross enough money (that was studio's fault however because of lack of advertising and abysmal distribution)...but Gilliam managed to put the movie together literally at the very last minute and you won't see a one bit of struggle of the production on the final product. That movie is freekin masterpiece. It is so visually stunning, witty, with great music and such wonderful finale. I think it is actually one of the greatest triumph of creativity in the history of cinema - despite the odds and overcoming his own megalomania, Gilliam pulled off a trick worthy of Baron Munchausen himself. Love this movie since childhood to this very day.

I actually agree with you. I've always loved Gilliam's Munchausen and I consider it one of his best films.
My reference to it here as a 'failure' was meant only to give viewers an idea of how its production troubles and minuscule box office grosses destabilized his career. Its reputation as a 'failure' was what ushered in subsequent projects like Fisher King and Quixote.
I believe anyone who watches the movie itself will definitely see it rose above its circumstances. If I seem to dismiss it in this video, please know that this was not my intent. It was just for the sake of narrative economy.

I was curious what this film had to offer in special features of the Blu-ray… I was extremely disappointed that it’s just an advert within the Blu-ray.
