Garlic cloves are all planted at 15cm spacing between cloves and rows, to a total depth of approximately 2 inches (6cm). Once planted the cloves are lightly covered over with soil before applying a top mulch of stable manure over the whole bed. The manure is applied to a depth of approximately 3 inches (10cm) to act as a weed suppressant, insulation for the winter and then to provide nutrients during spring.

Garlic are split into two distinct groups, although there are sub groups within. The groups or types are Hardneck and Softneck.
Hardneck types produce a hard stem from the centre of the bulb that develops to form a flowering scape. This scape is edible when picked before opening to flower.
Hardneck garlic cloves form around the flowering stem, and tend to be less in number, although larger, than that of Softneck garlic.
Hardneck types tend to be the first to mature for lifting. They also have a strong taste.
Softneck types do not produce a flowering scape, and so develop a central bulb/clove in place of where the scape is, in the case of Hardneck garlic.
Softneck cloves are smaller in size than Hardneck but are greater in number.
Softneck garlic are generally later for harvesting and have more subtle flavours and taste.
Softneck types also store for much longer periods than Hardneck types.
Softneck garlic do require warmer soils that are free draining, meaning that growing Hardneck varieties is always a better option if you are just starting out and yet to work out how well garlic will grow in your area.

Hi Sam. Thanks for watching and for the great message. Unfortunately I don’t think RUclips read messages 🤣
I hope your Garlic planting goes well this year. Which varieties are you going for?
Have a good weekend 🧄🌻
Hi Ian, completely agree, RUclips don't read messages 😂. I have planted some I bought from a shop, not sure about the variety but they are big blubs and already started to grow, let's hope it will be a good harvest for all of us.

Good luck with the shop bought ones. Hope they do well for you. I’m sure you will soon get the bug and want to grow more varieties than you really need, just like I do. 🌻
Planted mine a week or so ago, shocked to see it's already coming up! Put it in a mini polytunnel

Hi Sarah. Many thanks for watching and for the message.
You’re doing well to have it sport so quickly, although it has been a mild October so far.
That said, I was surprised by my Shallots sprouting.
I hope you get a great harvest next year and have tried out a few different varieties.
All the best 🧄🌻
