We had this piece scheduled for a concert last week. Sadly, it got cancelled due to the quarantine. A shame really, it's a beautiful piece. Cheers from Brazil.

The piano cadence at 3 bars before figure 2 in the slow mvt. The Martinu cadence. Amazing.

I love Martinu, but it's funny that even in a harpsichord concerto, he can't do without his piano-as-percussion.

Ha, fun comment! But I kind of like it when composers treat the piano as a part of the normal symphony orchestra.

@@markmarshall6448 indeed, me too ^^ it's quite similar with the continuo in baroque ensembles, with the exception that continuo was encouraged to improvise and tastefully add ornaments over the written harmonic progression. A bit like jazz in fact

@@markmarshall6448 I know right? Everytime I look at a symphonic work I want to look if they have piano as a percussion part and percussion instruments that are besides the standard. Ever since listening to stravinsky petrushka I have never been able to go back the rabbit hole

The magical last few minutes of the Adagio remind of the way Michael Nyman and Philip Glass would fold the Baroque/ Classical soundworld into minimalism decades later. Great stuff!
