Basically light gear for that " Slab" I remember when Bolsa Chicas Horizon was void of oil rigs. Great job handling that fish ...that big they can literally suck themselves to the sandy bottom!
What's up Tony? Yeah I'm a believer now! This was my third time trying this spot, it's a trek but well worth it. Where did we meet? Trying to figure it out I meet a lot of fishermen at several different spots.
You did great on the fight ! Checking your drag constantly is always a plus you would do great with big Tuna ! Just don't try to hold the line on the bigger running brute's !
I know this video is old and I have all the respect in the world for catch and release BUT no way I'm releasing it. NOT a halibut that size. I've got family in HB and my late uncle grilled a couple legal halibuts my cousin and I caught, absolutely THE MOST delicious fish I've ever had! 🎣🐟
I definitely recommend braid, very strong and you can load more line on your reel. I always use a flurocarbon leader though usually 18 inches or so, I believe they are somewhat line shy.
Thanks dude, yeah I've been trying to add it into the videos because I'll eventually be asked in the comments! yeah I figured a lot of ppl would have kept this fish!
Thanks! Yeah I was not expecting this fish at all this day, so I just went with the flow and landed it the only way I knew possible. Even if I had a net, there would be some discussing tail rot. The fish was healthy and swam off strongly so I didn't feel the need to keep a big breeding female.
Ben Fishin' I know , you will be criticized no matter what you do. Sorry I didn’t mean to add to that. You obviously know what you are doing and have more self control then me because she would have been my dinner. Tight lines👍
Sik fish!!!!...i fish there all the time biggest one i caught 18” i seen a over 30” swim out from under me last month ☹️how do u keep the frozen sardine on your hook they only last one or two casts for me then fall off!!
Thanks! Keep at it! I was using a fresh dead anchovy so it stayed on the hook very well, but if you use frozen you can do a chovy wrap for better results casting----ruclips.net/video/93NfSdjW8GY/видео.html
Didn't buy them caught them with a sabiki rig, they were mixed in with some smelt. The anchovy I caught this Halibut with was large for a shore caught anchovy, maybe 5-6 inches. I don't usually catch Halibut on dead anchovy, it's usually a live offering or a lure, but there is heavy current at this spot so perhaps it gave the illusion of being alive as it drifted past this beast.
Great catch man! I’m just starting to get into saltwater fishing and checking out some vids. Love your video man! Subscribed and I’ll be checking out your other videos too! Maybe one day we’ll run into each other, I’m a Long Beach native. 🤙🏽
Honestly the parking lot always seems empty, must be paid parking(I rode my bike). I suggest week days, I've been 4 times to this particular spot and it's never busy.
Can't make people happy. If you keep a legal sized fish they get racial on you. If you practice catch and release they still aren't happy. Guess that's why they're called haters.
Ben Fishin' do you recommend a 8'6 rod for jetty and surf? (Also what lure rating or line rating is the rod? And is it medium or medium heavy?) Also, what size reel do you recommend?
This particular rod is rated for 3/8 to 1 oz. lures, Medium-heavy power, with fast action. I definitely recommend this rod for jetty and surf. I personally prefer smaller reels, maybe one size larger than the one I'm using in this video. The braided line is key though to maximize line capacity and casting distance.
On behalf of all fisherman that love catching halibut...... thank you for that awesome release! Respect!
Great release:those big Buts are the best for creating the next generation of Buts.Unreal patients in fighting it for so long, and not breaking it off.
Basically light gear for that " Slab"
I remember when Bolsa Chicas Horizon was void of oil rigs. Great job handling that fish ...that big they can literally suck themselves to the sandy bottom!
thats bad ass, i havent caught my first halibut yet but watching this just now made me wanna take a cruise to the beach right now.
Awesome man! Respect for catch and release 🤙
Thanks Fishing Fan!
Pretty much have to catch and release. That water isn’t that healthy for eating the fish.
Nice tight line always I'm going this morning good release, to keep the breeder going for the next gen. Thanks BRO
For sure! good luck!
Nice. I've surfed and fished there many times and never caught one that big.
Told ya that's a hot spot, my 1st fish of the year 1/11/18 was a legal hali on the 4th cast, good tip, huh! Tony from L.B. maybe I'll see ya their

great catch man. you resemble John Philip Walker Lindh . I wonder what he's doing these days, fishing maybe?
Nice one! Such a priceless spot! Halimotto, Danielson!
awsome channel, keeps me motivated and amped to fish more.!!!!!
Thanks Mike!
Awesome catch and I will be fising for Halibut in that area in a few days.
Thanks, good luck!
Awesome catch Ben. Congrats on your PB.
Thanks bro!!
Nice catch Ben, and congrats on your PB.
Thanks Donte!
What reel is that? It looks like my favorite “Shimano with Quickfire” but looks larger than the one I have. What model is it? Thanks Troy.
You did great on the fight ! Checking your drag constantly is always a plus you would do great with big Tuna ! Just don't try to hold the line on the bigger running brute's !
Thanks Mel! Good to know, I definitely want to catch tuna some day!
When fishing big tuna, you check your drag before fishing and leave it alone. Maybe increasing it some at the end of the fight.
Nice catch . . . and with great patience. Way to go!
Thanks!

Home run for the Catch and Release! 👏👍Large breeders maintain healthy fish populations!
bolsa is the best..i used to catch absolute trophy spot fin croaker there with big sand crabs...love that place
Nice catch and release!!! Fish ON!!!
Thanks man!
NICE FISH!!! congradulations!!
Heck ya man, that is a toad from shore or a boat. Congrats on the PB.
Thanks RHYAK!
Nice catch, I actually just caught a halibut on my channel like a week ago.
do you recommend using braid for halibut, i have 40lb test on my abu garcia, i dont know if they are line shy
I definitely recommend braid, very strong and you can load more line on your reel. I always use a flurocarbon leader though usually 18 inches or so, I believe they are somewhat line shy.
thanks i will definetly put the fluro carbon
Nice vid! Nobody ever tells you what rig and bait they are using! But I would have eaten her! Haha 👊🏻
Thanks dude, yeah I've been trying to add it into the videos because I'll eventually be asked in the comments! yeah I figured a lot of ppl would have kept this fish!
@@benfishin5725 Nothing but respect for the release
Yo Ben long time no see, do you ever see mitch in town nowadays?
When your fishing with anchovies, do you just let it sit on the bottom or do you drag it along slowly?
Normally I just let the rig sit still but the current was so strong at this spot that I had to let it flow and basically walk along and follow it.
Ok thanks!
nice catch!!
Nice catch! Try not to gill handle them though. Unless your going to eat them of course!
Thanks! Yeah I was not expecting this fish at all this day, so I just went with the flow and landed it the only way I knew possible. Even if I had a net, there would be some discussing tail rot. The fish was healthy and swam off strongly so I didn't feel the need to keep a big breeding female.

No worries, you actually addressed me constructively like a human being, and I'm always a fan of that. It's rare in YT comments...
Love the video! I was wondering if maybe someone can give me a google maps pin or directions of where to surf fish. I would great appreciate the help.
The surf at any beach
Real Trophy good job.
Respect CPR ,good man.
i remember the sand at bolsa chica really makes your feet tough.
Awesome dude! You will catch her again I bet

Ben Fishin'
Thanks for the link im gonna try that!
Halibut is some of the best tasting fish. Should have kept that one.
I'll agree it tastes amazing. Personally, I release large breeding fish.
Nice catch and release✌️✌️✌️🤟🏼
What reel are you using
Nice but you need to upgrade your reel
We need more fishers like you in the OC and LB area. I give it 28 1/2 lbs.
Thanks John!
What you catch em on. Shrimp?
👍👍
where did you buy the anchovies from?
Didn't buy them caught them with a sabiki rig, they were mixed in with some smelt. The anchovy I caught this Halibut with was large for a shore caught anchovy, maybe 5-6 inches. Bad ass man. Good job
i lost one about that size at the shore last week ;(

nice catch! looking to go fishing there. where is a good spot to park? what are good times to go where it's not too busy
Honestly the parking lot always seems empty, must be paid parking(I rode my bike). I suggest week days, I've been 4 times to this particular spot and it's never busy.
thank man, i'm gonna check out this spot sometime. gonna have to bite the bullet and pay that 15 dollar parking lol
I could not do what you did.. I looked at that fish and my mouth watered. At $5 a pound there was maybe $20 of halibut. Most tasty.
Try 18 to 31.99 lb
And you put it back!
Why you released?
SAM Channel, because she was a breeder. Ben is very conscious of preserving the future of our fishery here in Southern California.
Did you use cut anchovy, or whole small anchovy?
Live bait is key for these gems but I have caught plenty on whole frozen anchovies!
@@getfurtherfaster Thanks bro, sick catch!! I couldn't catch a cold in bolsa chica..
I live near your place. Can I have the address or direction of the place that you fishing? Thanks.
I'm not sure of an address but a simple google maps search will show the location it's right off PCH.
Caught and released all my Halibut last year, got lots of haters mean mugging me. Lol
Can't make people happy. If you keep a legal sized fish they get racial on you. If you practice catch and release they still aren't happy. Guess that's why they're called haters.
Haters mean muggin when u take them too 🤦♂️🤷♂️
Nice one!
impressive 👍
You still fishing ?
Nice man! I was there earlier, no luck on halibut just perch. Were you using Carolina or dropper rig? What bait? I was trying the swimming mullets.
Thanks! Carolina 1.5 oz. and a fresh dead anchovy
Whole anchovy or chunk?
The whole anchovy
Nice catch tho
congrats duude!
Thanks Rodney!
What size rod and reel and line?
Shimano Scimitar 8'6", Shimano IX2000R, 15lb. J Braid, 12lb. fluro leader
Ben Fishin' do you recommend a 8'6 rod for jetty and surf? (Also what lure rating or line rating is the rod? And is it medium or medium heavy?) Also, what size reel do you recommend?

Ben Fishin' should I get a medium or medium heavy? And 2000, 2500, or 3000, or 4000 reel size?
I'd go MH and 3000
To funny! I jumped the gun, It’s the one I have! lol
Nice hali
dude you fucking killed the fish and ripped its gills it definitely died.

Release after you grabbed the fuck out of his gills😂
