Bloody brilliant, so glad i was part of an era ,that wont come round again, no wonder most of us feel lost today. Those were happy days. Thank you for refreshing the memories and great times.
My time my era. I was there. Bikes do everything better now days but there's a lot of the spirit missing. I'm glad I was there to experience these times. Some original audio would have been nice.
Only just come across this film. The little boy riding the bike with his dad on the back is my cousin! His dad was my uncle Geoff. My dad would have been there too. My dad Ray Ockenden died in the mid 80's and uncle Geoff Ockenden died in 1999.
Wow this took me back to happy times.Everything seemed simplier. No mobile phones just See ya at Rykers at 11.I used to work on Saturdays at Dennis Heath's Graveyard in Twickenham and went every Sunday.I also remember the white woollen knee length socks folded over the top of my Frank Thomas boots.Just got back into biking after 30 odd years away and now living in Dorking.Have popped down a few times but very different now.
Killer bikes and killer tunes. Talk about a bygone time. I was just a little kid during this era of motorcycling, but it's what hooked me on bikes as a way of life. Thanks for posting this.
Wow what a brilliant film! I didn't know about this. I grew up in Dorking so the bikes on the Mickleham Bends were the stuff of legend. I ended up working at Rykas in 1990. Tony, the owner was a sort of Peter Grant type guy (nicer I think - but he had this scary heavy sigh!). And then there was his daughters, Debbie, and JoJoCosmic who I had a HUGE crush on she was the coolest girl I'd ever met. Dave was the manager around that time. I was only 18 and very innocent to the world, and there were some pretty ropey characters around back then, and I got taken in and Ryka's ended badly for me. But before that the times were good, late shifts with my mates playing Bauhaus really loud and some goths coming in and dancing are the place. Cooking fried egg sandwiches so perfectly at 7am that they burst when the businessmen bit into them, the amazing double chilli burgers, Sundays and the spinner with orders on being full up three deep, the best tea in the world. 'Accidentally' bumping in Jo behind the counter when it was busy.. yup, happy daiZ indeed. I discovered the original Fleetwood Mac from a tape of Jojo's ("who is that?" - "Fleetwood Mac.." "whaaaat?"). We had a house party at Tony's one hot afternoon and Led Zep Physical Graffiti was playing, and to this day I cant help but picture the lazy scene when I hear Down by the Seaside and Ten Years Gone. Clearing up the car park after a Sunday doesn't hold such pleasant memories 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Brilliant bit of box hill history. I can remember the rykas in the film, was 16 in 1979 & lived in morden. 12 miles from my parents house to box hill. Only had a mobylette then, but went there once on it without breaking down! Spent many Sundays there in the 80's on various old British bikes, including my BSA Royal star 500 which I still own!!
what a great time we had... and it's especially nice when you can remember it again and again carefree, rebellious, non-conformist and every year on the Isle of Man, plus the stunning sound of the Twins from the UK or the Guzzi's and also the Japanese... No stationary noise capers 😂 no airbag waistcoats 😇 to enjoy motorbike riding no senior teachers... and do-gooders 😂 just good rock and roll and sex and towards the sun 👍 Greetings Holger
Brilliant - I was 20 and I'm actually in this video :-) 5:53 with "BSA and Paul" on my back. Such good times. Still ride a Triumph and still go to Rykas - see you Sunday !
I remember seeing this film in about 1981 in Perth Western Australia supporting a shitty film called Times Square.I was travelling Australia on a Yamaha 1100 . The Title, images and soundtrack stuck in my mind and I allways kept a eye for it in Video stores. Great to see it again . Well done.Certainly catches a time.
Thanks so much Julian for making and uploading this. I found out about it via the Moto Guzzi club magazine too. My brother used to go to Box Hill meets but I’ve never been. This film was a wonderful gem - I was in my late teens when this was made and I captures so beautifully how bikes and bikers felt to me then. It wouldn’t look the same now all in reflective gear and Kevlar and the rest. This evokes the magic, camaraderie and romance of it so well and I love the filming style with snippets of live in all those composited stills - never seen anything like it and it helps make the whole film extra special. Thanks so much. Wonderful.
Really great that you enjoyed this piece of bike history Stephen. It was a wonderful project to work on as everyone contributed so much to make it work out.
Brilliant film, really captures the spirit of Box Hill and biking at the time. I used to ride out there fairly regularly from around 1979 to 1989, great times ! I always remember the guy in the white coat at Rykas keeping order in the car park ! It looks like some shots (around 2:10) were shot on Chobham common ? I recognise the roundabout as I worked a just few hundred yards away at the time. Thanks again !
Thanks for posting ;) About 10 years before my time there. Great to see how it was. (I remember OGRI at 6:03) Fun to see whats changed and what hasn't Interesting that there were so many police. (Goes with the music ;)
amazing i new this film existed but had never seen it until now 2 mins and 38 seconds in the guy riding pillion on the motoguzzi s3 is my uncle and the 8 year old boy riding is my cousin he is now 46
I remember the filming of that dramatic scene. I have lost touch with all the bikers but remember how great it was to work with them all. This film was was very much a film made with love and enthusiasm by all concerned.
thanks julian unfortunately geof the owner of the moto guzzi past away 20 years ago his son riding the bike (Nelson) is now 46 i have sent him the link to the film along with his sisters and geof's widow they are over the moon to finally see the film thanks for posting it as it has brought a great deal of joy to all of us who remember him
Great to read it was was worth the all the effort of getting it transferred to a video file and then on to youtube. Sad to read Geof has passed away. Pass on my best wishes to one and all! All the best, julian
I now own that Moto Guzzi S3, I bought it as a non-runner a couple of years ago, it had been much modified in the '80s and '90s, I saw it advertised on ebay as a non-runner with a later 'square barrel' motor in it with a broken bottom end, I asked the seller the for registration number so that i could check it out, and when I realised it was the bike from the film, SPD 3R, I HAD to have it. I LOVE the image of the Dad letting his young Son ride the bike, while the Dad sits relaxed, hands free pillion, it shows the love and trust between them and the joy of riding that they obviously shared. I've been working on it in my spare time here and there ever since, it now has a highly tuned 950 round barrel motor and goes very well!
Was there today, super busy, maybe 200+ bikes. Its funny I get this recommended on youtube as soon as I got home.. we definitely not being watched and our data sold.
Many many happy memories ! Is this the uk version of ‘on any sunday’ maybe ? Excellent film made around the time of the film ‘quadrophenia ‘ and both featuring Sting ! , brilliant !
It was a very meaningful for us all at the time as this was a real labour of love to try out this stills photo technique which today with digital cameras would be so easy but back then was ground breaking and time consuming. All the best, julian
You made this video? It's very creative. Not sure you could do it so easily with digital though, because the way the photographic film saturates colour sort of adds atmosphere and helps with that stop-motion effect you used, with careful exposure times, to overlay 2 photographs to give the impression of speed and movement. It's got something extra that's intangible and hard to define. This is an art on the way out.
it seems strange nowadays in the video virtually all the bikers are young, not a grey head to be seen ! now at the few cafes ive been to they are virtually all grey haired bikers and very few youngsters its a very worrying trend for the future of motorbikes.
It is our 35mm film which was made back in 1979/80 which I decided to transfer it on telecine on to a video file and post on RUclips along with other historical productions rather have it sit in can under my bed. All the best, julian
@@taysider9973 Hi Julian, so good to see this. My late husband, John Daniels, was the editor. I vividly remember meetings with you, potential distributors, and viewings in Wardour Street. John died in 2010. As fete would have it, my partner is an ex-film editor, but also the (print) editor of the club magazine for the GB Moto Guzzi Club. I'm doing a magazine pull-out section on rider-friendly cafes, and Ryka's is a must. With your permission I'd like to use a screen-shot of the 8 year old and his dad on a Moto Guzzi. Very best wishes, Hilary Daniels.
@@hilarydaniels4883 Sorry to read John has passed away. Gosh I take it was an illness and not old age? Of course you can take a still photo from the video of the film (you can credit the film if you like). The film went out twice in Australia with big feature films and in the Netherlands and Switzerland. Best wishes for the New Year! All the best, Julian
The mad mile A217. I remember when there was a lay-by on the south bound side where the bikes used to pull in & race up to the Banstead crossroads. Someone in this era painted "pits" in the lay-by & a "start line" on the actual dual carriageway. I remember actually seeing them with my own eyes !!
Shame it's all just stills, I would have much rather have seen and heard the bikes in action than the crappy Police soundtrack. My era though, I got my first bike in the 70's and have never been without one since. Lucky enough to have more money since so have a nice little collection in the garage to keep me busy. Never been to Box Hill, but did buy bikes from Moto Vecchia in Dorking. Started my riding in North Yorkshire and spent many hours at the Coffee Bar in Sherburn, so big shout out to anyone who was around there in the 70's to early 80's. Roll on spring! By the way, to all bikers, join MAG!! You really need to because the government is trying to shut biking down as we know it with all this green agenda bollox, MAG are the only organisation actively campaigning and protesting against this on our behalf, the more support they get the more pressure they can exert against politicians trying to stop our fun, so join up and get involved.
It was pretty vibrant early 2000s, but had gone off a bit by 2006 or so... More so by 2009. Same with The Oakdene. Used to be regular there for brekky on Sunday, then down to Whiteways...... Fine times...
