- 1954 Fordson Major at Banbury Steam Fair www.banburystea... at Bloxham in Oxfordshire UK on Sunday 28thJune 2010 ,the first tractor in the demonstration ring on Sunday afternoon. Not many people at the show saw it because they were watching England in South Africa get knocked out of the 2010 football world cup by Germany on the TV in the beer tent .
Its not strictly speaking square wheeled but the shape varies between maybe between a 6 sided hexagon , rectangle , rhombus , parallelogram, trapezoid , so its much simpler to say square wheels .
The rear wheels were called Rotopad. Converted by Rotary Hoes Ltd., later called Howard Rotopad tracks. They are a type of track unit to achieve a Low Ground Pressure for working on soft surfaces. They were designed to replace the wheels on a tractor .The machine was used for cutting trenches in which originally were laid clay pipes for land drainage. These machines were developed over the years, certainly until the late 60s at which time they would be laying continuous plastic pipe, which of course is still used in land drainage today.
This machine is a drainage trencher used for digging a trench the trencher which then laid the pipes as it moved slowly along putting clay pipes into wet land. After the pipes had been laid a tractor with a trailer having a side blade came along pushing the soil back into the trench. The machine is a Standard Fordson tractor with tracks that walked the machine along subsequently giving it better traction with less pressure on the ground than a wheeled type . They may look cumbersome but they were excellent when the going was wet .
A slow motion clip at the end of this video, see if you can work out how the Rotopads work .

Good Detailed article on this subject

Here's me thinking thats it's only a matter of time before someone invented the square wheel, and it's already been done!
I suspect there's a hell of a lot more stress on the 'track pins' between the 6 long track segments than with short segmented crawler tracks. Those bars make long lever arms, there the wheel is a single pivot. It also looks like you'd be in trouble if a big chunk of wood or rock got in there. Plus its probably noisy as HECK. The phrase "cantankerous clattering contraption of calamity" comes to mind.
never seen that before... totally awesome!
i posit that the obvious right angle must perform a mechanically impossible feat, though, somehow...
cool! : )
For a vehicle moving at a snail's pace, this is a great idea. On a fast moving vehicle, you're going to get your socks shaken off.
+Thomas1952 But.. it was NEVER designed or intended for fast moving, perhaps you should read the history/description provided at top of page. Ye olde phrase "orses for courses" comes to mind..
That is a great idea, didn't really think about it till I saw this!
the rotary hoes trencher built at rotary hoes horndon on the hill essex, the tracks are called roto pads and did work very well.when working this machine the driver walked and steered the machine from the rear and to one side of this machine, hope this makes sense,no one sat on the tractor when in working mode.
The driver did not appear to or shaken or knocked about, it looked like a smooth ride!
PUT THAT ON COMBINE TO WORK ON SOFTER GRUND THIS CULD WORK GOOD
oh I agree, but, the stress seems to be put on the chains, not the wheel as the pivot, but still a lot of stress, i still stand with what i said, with some modern thought and parts this could have a place, the longer links would hold the weight better then the smaller links used now. a big plus being that you can use the front wheels to steer plus would be able to fit to any tractor (in theory) but the best reason is its just fun to watch drive by. art in my eyes... noisy art
its a great idea, yeah I know they have full tracked trackters but if you think about it. this has less joints, only one wheel, and the track is ridged, so i bet if we put some modern thought (engineering) into it it would be a lot easier to use then track, less joints to greese, less chance of slipping, and spreads the weight better, better in every way but one....speed, but hell its a trackter.
This is reinventing the wheel, literally. But in the bad sense, just going back to commit the fails we already committed in the past. The system tanks uses seems to be way more efficient, less susceptible to break, smoother and many other things.
What happens when huge globs of mud get inside.
It looks like a major headache, to many parts to break.
There's a reason they are so rare, still fun to watch though.
That's cool, probably not too reliable though.
looking closely it makes sense...
Will Back A cigar to that man!
There's more going on here than can be seen at first glance.
Genius...for using the minimum tech and max nouse.
For about 5/6d, here, one has the attributes of the crawler without the extra expense.
Post war affluence would have killed such an elegant, low-cost solution, for sure.
Will Back n o mate !! it makes no sense at all. end of story
Wombat situation room And could you have thought this up, and it would have worked? Not from wot I'm hearing?
yea, but there is still a round wheel inside the square one
you forgot "bananas" and "insane" in the title.
Now there's an interesting machine.
Whhen used by Renault tractors it wass colled ''rotapede''...... used only for a very short time.. by...
that must be unstoppable in mud...
Now there's a mechanical arrangement I would never have come up with if I tried.
they are called tracks
What is the name of this odd type of track?
wow...!
Someone reinvented a tank track.
fordson trencher
He Man tank.
love it so simple
genious....
PIMP MYYY RIIIIIDEE XD
FAIL.
