I'm probably reading into it WAY too far but after watching the pound house series a million times, I have a theory about the series. It starts with Doug kinda lost in his life, (internet dating / seeming depressed and shit) and then all of a sudden, Brent comes into his life as a strange dude from craig's list trying to buy his bear beanbag. Although Doug gets confused by Brent, he sorta keeps him in his life as a point of interest (he's once asked if Brent is his friend and Doug says he's not really sure.)
Also, when Doug is asked to hang out doing something obscure like checking out a garden, he says 'sure, sounds like somethin different' or when John C Reilly's character asks if Doug wants to eat a worm, as it will 'help him grow strong', Doug reluctantly takes the offer saying ' I don't give a shit, I'll eat it."
I think the whole point of this series is when life feels like shit, just take whatever comes your way and step outside your comfort zone. Even if it feels weird, it can lead to something good.

I think doug is doing parody on people trying to be edgy for stupid reasons when they're actually pretty privileged. i think when brent left him it could have been like his other half sort of left him too mentally so he hilariously quickly takes to this edgelord character where he doesn't give a shit about anyone, and then when brent comes back hes normal again haha, i guess that also adds to the theory that brent is actually like a part of his psyche.
