Worth Noting that Vicki appears to have entered the city via Canterbury East (They left via West). Few things for in case you guys ever come back: - We cave a Castle! It's a few minutes walk from Canterbury East. - On the opposing platform to the one you departed form (West) you can lean over the wall and see an additional line that travels adjacent to the line, then disappears into the bushes - this is the remaining track from the once great 'Crab And Winkle' line which connected Canterbury West to Whitstable. You can actually walk the route, and see the remaining tunnels and trenches where the tracks were! - We also (Had) a Canterbury South Station, but it's now just a station house with a path. - In answer to Vicki's question - the Cathedral started construction in 1070, so in 52 years it will be 1000 years old! - Next time come in the Summer on a clear day, we've so many gorgeous gardens to see in the Summer!
Geoff and Vicky, there's a self operated level crossing very similar to the one you visited except with swing gates, near Collingham station in Notts on the line from Newark to Lincoln. You can walk to it from Collingham station along a footpath and through a couple of fields in about 15 mins. Love the series.
Well done. Love all the frames of the station facades and other historic railroad structures. Vicky did some good clips of Canterbury. It's more than just the stations sometimes.
What about All the Cathedrals?! BeNeLux, France and Germany as well as Spain!. Interrail for the win! Brisk four week trip. Cologne, Münster, Barcelona, Paris - all the Cathedrals!
I now live in the USA but I was born in Margate and Grandparents lived in Ramsgate both have a special place in my heart and have always wanted to retire to Ramsgate :)
Worked for a US pharmaceutical company back in the '80's and for their 25 year anniversary in the UK they hired the Orient Express carriages from Maidenhead to Torquay return, though it was diesel traction rather than steam. Meal on the train was brilliant and spent the day at the Torquay Grand Hotel.
Ramsgate is the home of a pleasure boat called Sundowner, which belonged to 2nd Officer Lightoller of the Titanic, who sailed it over to Dunkirk in 1940.
I used to cross over that level crossing on my way to work! Always by foot though, which is why I never noticed that sign. Its quite a way from the station so well done for going to see it. I cant wait for you to visit my current commute. Much less scenic though.
if you like churches and arches that buses used to go under you'll love Beverley up in Yorkshire. Beverley Minster is an amazing church that was used by the film crews for Victoria and Charles III as a substitute for Westminster and North Bar is such a small arch that special buses, nicknamed 'Beverley Buses' where built with a curved roof so that they could just fit. Beverley is also home to the oldest public secondary school in the world, Beverley Grammar School, founded 700AD and school of many famous people including Ken Annakin and Paul Robinson. Hope you do your Beverley when you get to Yorkshire, it really is a wonderful town that I am proud to call home.
JWB_Gamer I love Beverly and the Wolds. I didn't grow up there but my family has roots going way back in the East Riding. Driving up Garoby feels like coming home.
My mum used to manage the buffets at Canterbury West and Ramsgate stations back in the Traveller's Fare days - Maxpax tea a speciality and her cheese sandwiches were never stale!
I'm glad you came to my home town of Ramsgate and were impressed with our lovely station. I think you would have enjoyed Ramsgate Royal Harbour which has some interesting railway past, including the underground railway and a station and turntable on the sea front.
That Only Fools and Horses mural at 7:28 is superb! A fitting tribute to the legendary 1989 episode 'The Jolly Boys Outing'. Pity that Margate has gone so downhill since...
There is a level crossing on the inverness to Thurso line where there is basically no level crossing or light and you have to drive up to it, look both ways and then cross!
I'm following this from Toronto in Canada; but it was in Canterbury in 2008 that I had my most thrilling transit moment ever -- at the advice of someone, I sat in the front seat on the top deck of a bus going through the West Gate in Canterbury. You were *convinced* that the roof was going to peel right off the bus, and quite possibly the side walls too. It didn't, of course, the bus drivers are much too competent, but that's the impression given.
I started watching the Manchester stations out of a mild interest but quickly fell down the rabbit hole. What surprised me about these first videos is I know a few of these such as Bromley Newhaven and paddock wood for starters but my visits there were fleeting and long ago. Paddock wood was a disastrous failed tryst for example. Love these. Mrs R thinks I'm mad but I have to apprentice myself on all the Manchester stations soon, only I'm walking the coast as well
4:26 - The Ham Sandwich sign: www.google.com/maps/@51.2382141,1.3342839,3a,20.2y,348.67h,83.58t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1smpDin7xLL5HOclG2QKuoeA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1?hl=en
Fun Fact: Between Dover Priory and Ramsgate the main-ish stock for the line is the Javelin, although at peak times Electrostars run as well. P. S: The Javelin on that line also does a full loop around the line from St Pancras to St Pancras via Dover, Ramsgate and Faversham.
You could probably class it as "the express". Other trains only go up to London Victoria. Plus... the Javelin uses the High Speed line to and from St Pancras (ticket costs a bit more for the privilege!) :)
Five lines of English, and seven in French, just proves that some people are very expressive. Reminds me of a 'sight gag' in The Two Doctors, where a sign in Spanish consisting of about three or four words gets translated into two in English, and simply says Keep out. ☺
I've been to Sheerness station to catch an Olau Line ferry to Vlissingen in the 1990s. I remember it was quite a long way to pull my large suitcase with two little wheels in one end from the station to the ferry terminal. The station looked pretty much the same from outside as on your video.
Thanks for stopping at "my" station! The only reason I adopted Sandwich is it's edible. Being Australian, this is probably one of the few videos I'll recognise due to visiting Canterbury a couple of years ago
Sandwich station is a bit of a walk from the town centre where The Sandwich Shop is. Also in the town centre is the delightfully named "No Name Street"
If your doing all the castles then Colchester castle better be on the list. Also at some point soon the Tornado will be traveling between Colchester Town and Walton on the Naze. Just a heads up for when you do that area
Geoff, you've given me some inspiration to do my own journey idea. Go on every UK TOCs longest service in terms of distance, not time. Some only come at certain times on certain days such as the Arriva Trains Wales services as Saturday services which are the 12:30 and 14:30 from Manchester Piccadilly to Pembroke Dock on a Class 175 or 158 for almost 8 hours. Also those pullman services font cost hundreds of pounds, I've checked the other week and more like thousands lol.
Loved how went to Margate with the piano music was quite sad really, as felt like dedicating what used to be like, fairground pleausre town, sadly gone to blitz but felt like a tribute when ended scenes of Margate
I remember the BR sandwiches from my 'grand tour' of the network way back in the early 70-ies. But I knew I was in the UK when my fellow ferry passengers went straight for the Harwich PQ station buffet to get "chip butties", a very strange sight indeed for a Dutch 15 year old raised on bread with cheese or chocolate sprinkles ;)
I forgot to mention that we arrived at about 06:00 in the morning, the ferry was from the Dutch SMZ (Sealink did the other half) and they did serve a 'full' brekkie of sorts but it was looked upon with a mixture of pitty and loathing. Funny how some scenes are firmly set in the mind.
Really enjoying the videos. Looking forward to when you're in my neck of the woods, Gloucestershire. Let me know if you want a tour around Gloucester Cathedral
Also, I heard that when Londonist were planning to do a video on the Sightlines of St Paul's, Tom, completely unaware of that, made one himself. So Londonist had to write emails to Tom explaining that they're not just stealing his content :D
That crossing is in Whitehall road Canterbury just by the marshes there is another interesting crossing at Chartham which you dont see many of these days
When I went on holiday to go camping in Canterbury, we went to Sandwich and saw that sign and made the exact same joke. Sandwich is a great place but never knew it had a train station.
I'm guessing that's a joke but as someone that comes from near Canterbury I just wanna say that Canterbury Cathedral was built in 1070, just 4 years after William the Conqueror became king, is a site of pilgrimage for those living in the UK and was the site of the murder of Thomas Beckett which led to King Henry II to build the large Keep and main Bailey of Dover Castle as mentioned earlier in the video, the king even hand built a chapel near the top of the Keep to honour the late Archbishop in an act of guilt for accidentally ordering his murder.
Bro….I’m playing assassins creed and that cathedral is already standing …only catching renovations. Don’t disrespect history that took a century to build
Ahh finally found video of you guys going through some Kent stations. I live near Ramsgate and use South Eastern it'd a so so type of service. Sittingbourne is a decent station go to see my friends in Medway a lot. Dover Priory is the train you don't wanna be on if your going back to Thanet 😂 make sure your in front 4 carriages as rear 4 go to Dover lol. You went past where I live though, Sandwich is a lovely place check out the river :) Folkestone has a nice station great scenery on way into station Yayyy you end up at Ramsgate finally! My hometown ❤️❤️ Margate bit of a shit hole but not bad. Dreamland it's saving grace ❤️❤️ Whitstable lovely station used to work in the town Never knew you had to operate the crossing at Canterbury West! 😳 Canterbury Cathedral great place and the city itself is fantastic! I recognise Dave nice chap :) Thanks Geoff for a fantastic video.
Brilliant as ever, thanks G&V! Dave was terrific, great find! Very cool story signs in that shot of Margate station. Questions, so many questions: 1. Who composed the opening music? Really liking it! 2. At 2:54 there is something bizarre in a sign box behind you. Wonder what it is?! 3. Are we allowed to ask about the ring on V's left hand?!?! :-) 4. The bonus shot was about what I wondered in Canterbury: whether V got a very wet bottom from sitting next to that dude's statue on the bench in the rain...?! [Now we'll see if the Usual Suspect attempts to answer all these Qs... ;-) ] Cheers guys!
+Ham Street Knew you'd answer. Either you're on the team or are G's alter ego. 3 is cool! 4, yer brain's in the gutter... I'm female and was concerned for V, as I'd be for myself, about discomfort (&/or embarrassment, depending on one's perspective). Doh. :-p
My Sandwich paradox is that I have a customer there who have a number of buildings on a huge business park. Whenever I'm there, I'm never working in the one building with a cash cafeteria as opposed to all the others with cashless vending. So I NEVER get a sandwich in Sandwich.
If the trains to Canterbury West are powered by 750 volts dc, where is the supply rail? Raised along side the running track? Or between the running rails? I can hardly find the supply rail in Episode 8. Thanks.
Ryan M hope you get to see the station you want, but remember they can't show all of them on video (or every video would be about 11 seconds of each station and nothing else!)
It had a massive upgrade in the late 2000s so whilst its exterior remains largely the same, the interiors and the amount of things to do has greatly increased (in non covid times of course) and I'd definitely recommend
Canterbury West and Canterbury East are terribly named. They are almost exactly in line along a north-south... line. Also, getting across the track around Canterbury West is _way_ harder than it should be. Google Earth lies when it implies there is a footbridge - it's just that (admittedly impressive) signal box. The two stations are also _completely_ separate; you have to go quite some way in either direction before you can change onto a train that will reach the other station.
In Illinois in the USA there are two places called Plano and Sandwich. They are building a store in between. They have a Plano Sandwich. (plain old sandwich) (also the second part was a joke)
I would absolutely love to go on the Belmont British Pullman. You mentioned the Orient Express. I would gladly contribute if you and Vicki had a Kickstarter to take the Venice Simpson Orient Express from Venice to London (which I have on good authority is the prettier direction of travel.)
Might be a place there at Sandwich to have a rememberance place for Douglas Adams as one of the caracters in the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is the sandwichmaker.
'There's no one less likely to share their food as one who is extremely hungry', old proverb, and if it isn't, I'm surprised that it ain't. 😉 (Doesn't Vicki look extremely cute, deep in thought, while gazing out of the window, that's how you should travel by train, as opposed to being treated like you're travelling trapped in a sardine tin, but I can't say that I would take a bite of tuna sandwich, as I am alergic, can't have sardines either) 😉
I live in sheerness. By the way the statue is the remembrance statue which is in memory of everyone that had come from the island and died fighting in the great war and ww2
All the airport Stations All the London stations (Including Tube, DLR, Tram, ect.) All the stations in (Insert county) so there would be like a long-ish video (Greater London might need two) All the NYC metro stations All the BART stations All the (insert anything here)
I've just realised how RIDICULOUSLY excited Vicki is going to be when you get to Conwy.
Worth Noting that Vicki appears to have entered the city via Canterbury East (They left via West). Few things for in case you guys ever come back:
- We cave a Castle!
I'm eating a sandwich and watching Geoff and Vicki it a sandwich at Sandwich Station. It doesn't get better than that :))
All the Castles. Presented by Vicki. Go for it!
I would watch that for sure
Geoff and Vicky, there's a self operated level crossing very similar to the one you visited except with swing gates, near Collingham station in Notts on the line from Newark to Lincoln. You can walk to it from Collingham station along a footpath and through a couple of fields in about 15 mins. Love the series.
Geoff if you wanted to see another abandoned station go to Folkestone harbour and see the abandoned station, it's really interesting.
I find it a bit scary that the opposite barrier wasn't fully raised when you crossed.
loved the hand operated crossing
It's my day off and I'm still sitting around in my pyjamas watching these videos. It's 2 in the afternoon. Thanks for sharing on youtube!
Glad to see you liked Ramsgate!
and a HUGE thumbs up to Mark @ Dover Priory
Best episode so far 👍🏼
And great compliment to the video editors behind the scenes. Good work!
Well done. Love all the frames of the station facades and other historic railroad structures.
Vicky did some good clips of Canterbury. It's more than just the stations sometimes.
All the castles... next year's project methinks...
CompletelyCr all over europe or only in the uk?
Probably only Great Britain, unfortunately...
Next year's project? Project 2018-2020 ;-)
What about All the Cathedrals?! BeNeLux, France and Germany as well as Spain!. Interrail for the win! Brisk four week trip. Cologne, Münster, Barcelona, Paris - all the Cathedrals!
I doubt Vicki could keep getting sabbaticals.
I now live in the USA but I was born in Margate and Grandparents lived in Ramsgate both have a special place in my heart and have always wanted to retire to Ramsgate :)
Husband Rob has driven double decker buses many times through the Westgate Towers!
Dave, spot on the word is 'reassuring....' Like the NHS, warm beer and drizzle.....living abroad , missing blighty...
That thumbnail... :D "Aaaaaagh it's a train!" That expression is just amazing!
Also: firsNO DON'T SAY IT
Ah that's where the crossing is! Great to see Tom Scott's video is linked :-)
Dave came appropriately dressed. Thanks all the Kents.
All the Bus Stations ? All the Seaports? All the Airports? All the Sandwiches ??
cowscrazy all the operators, all the teas
count me in on All The Sandwiches.....
cowscrazy all the sandwiches would take forever, the possibilities are endless
all the schools but then people will think he's a paedophile
That hand pumped level crossing was awesome. It's this sort of detail that makes these videos for me - a bit like the 'secrets of...' ones.
Excellent video! The series is epic so far well done everyone.
Ramsgate is the home of a pleasure boat called Sundowner, which belonged to 2nd Officer Lightoller of the Titanic, who sailed it over to Dunkirk in 1940.
Is it only the Kent trains that make 'whoo whoo whoo' as they are leaving the station? It made me feel at home!
that crossing :o TOM SCOTT!!!
Yes!!!
I used to cross over that level crossing on my way to work! Always by foot though, which is why I never noticed that sign. Its quite a way from the station so well done for going to see it. I cant wait for you to visit my current commute. Much less scenic though.
Such a shame it was raining! The clip at 6:26 "We're at Folkestone" is actually of Ashford International rather than Folkestone Central.
Came here to say this but someone beat me to it... by 6 years

Strewth, that hand operated crossing is prehistoric 🤪
Great video - some things on hear I've seen a few times before but lovely this sheds new light on things.

As a Canterbury man, it's so nice to look at your trip around all of the Kent stations :)

There is a Sandwich Shop in Sandwich it is right in the town centre tho.
Enjoying the adventure. Thanks

Neil Wood You could use it as the world's nerdiest chat-up line.
Nah.... that knowledge would get me nowhere.

Being Australian, this is probably one of the few videos I'll recognise due to visiting Canterbury a couple of years ago
the episodes are getting 'big bang theory' style names!
I have seen the Ham Sandwich sign! I was amazed when I was on holiday with my family a few years ago and saw it
Sandwich station is a bit of a walk from the town centre where The Sandwich Shop is.
Also in the town centre is the delightfully named "No Name Street"
No Name Street only got its name about 10 years ago. Before that it was simply a street with no name.
Canterbury, so beautiful. On my bucket list 👍🏻
There is also a push gate on the Dover- Ramsgate Line. Which also has javelins.
We have nothing, so good, like your train lines, here in bluddy cold Canada.......Love over a single sandwich....yes?
Loved how went to Margate with the piano music was quite sad really, as felt like dedicating what used to be like, fairground pleausre town, sadly gone to blitz but felt like a tribute when ended scenes of Margate
Kudos to Dan on the editing for this episode!
Do I get a bonus point for knowing that Margate Sands station (1846 to 1926) is on the site of the Jolly Boys mural?
no
I remember the BR sandwiches from my 'grand tour' of the network way back in the early 70-ies.
*Hand up* I am 100% ready to back a kickstarter for AllTheCastles.
Love that crossing! Can't imagine it'd be fun to do after a long day at work though lol
Really enjoying the videos. Looking forward to when you're in my neck of the woods, Gloucestershire. Let me know if you want a tour around Gloucester Cathedral
The special train you saw is actually kinda common. They always run out to somewhere like Canterbury.
Didn't expect to see Tom's video linked!
Well, Geoff and Tom have worked together before. I believe there were concurrent videos of the new power tunnels under London in particular.
If I'm not mistaken, he made a video on Sheerness as well about a sunken munitions supply ship
Also, I heard that when Londonist were planning to do a video on the Sightlines of St Paul's, Tom, completely unaware of that, made one himself. So Londonist had to write emails to Tom explaining that they're not just stealing his content :D
all the castles, that may be a good idea lol
That crossing is in Whitehall road Canterbury just by the marshes there is another interesting crossing at Chartham which you dont see many of these days
Have you considered a lens skirt/lens shroud for shooting scenery from train windows? It would probably remove all of the reflections.
When I went on holiday to go camping in Canterbury, we went to Sandwich and saw that sign and made the exact same joke. Sandwich is a great place but never knew it had a train station.
I wouldn't be able to go to all these places and not actually see them! Two minutes on the Isle of Sheppey? Deserves at least a few hours :-)
The cathedral can't be that old. It can't be finished there's still scaffolding on it.

Never knew you had to operate the crossing at Canterbury West! 😳
Canterbury Cathedral great place and the city itself is fantastic!

Thanks Geoff for a fantastic video.
As a local citizen I can tell you that double decker buses STILL go through the Westgate Towers!
Brilliant as ever, thanks G&V!
Dave was terrific, great find! Very cool story signs in that shot of Margate station.

Ryan M hope you get to see the station you want, but remember they can't show all of them on video (or every video would be about 11 seconds of each station and nothing else!)
WOW, Dreamland oozes Poirot out of every nook and cranny, wonder if it was used as a backdrop in the series ?
GREAT VIDEO, THANKS!
8:19 "I'd seen this elsewhere on RUclips"
Tom Scott?
David Frankal yep, there is a link to the video in the description! I am a new subscriber to your channel! I love the train news! Keep it up!
Probably
Great to see the Belmond British Pullman go through.
I was on my way from Brasov to Sinaia in Romania on this very day, also by train. Shabby and slow, but bang on schedule!
A shop bearing the sign "The Original Sandwich" would seem to be both obvious and irresistible to many.
Yes, Dover Castle still looks the same since I was there about 30 years ago. Been there, Done that :)
It had a massive upgrade in the late 2000s so whilst its exterior remains largely the same, the interiors and the amount of things to do has greatly increased (in non covid times of course) and I'd definitely recommend

They are building a store in between. They have a Plano Sandwich.

I would absolutely love to go on the Belmont British Pullman. You mentioned the Orient Express. I would gladly contribute if you and Vicki had a Kickstarter to take the Venice Simpson Orient Express from Venice to London (which I have on good authority is the prettier direction of travel.)
Interesting and entertaining episode; probably the best one yet. Nice editing, too. Shame about the weather, though!
Might be a place there at Sandwich to have a rememberance place for Douglas Adams as one of the caracters in the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is the sandwichmaker.
There is a gate like that between Martin mill and Walmer, in the same area of Kent, along Coldblow, you just push the gate open.
Yeah, it's still in regular use as far as I know
You missed the Tracey Emin artwork at Folkestone Central!
David Jackson Oh, is that the 3D handprints?
Watching your videos makes me feel as if I should be drinking a weak lemon drink at a time of my choosing.
please come back to kent and do the romney hythe and dymchurch railway! it is super cute and tiny and in a lovely area :)
