I watched the video of the fashion show after watching your video and it was so moving. It looked to me that the dresses that were cut bigger, then shrunken down, were all the dresses with the 'new look' silhouette. I noticed a lot the seams were in odd places (not princess lines over the bust) as if they were place where ever they fell after being folded down. This action made me think of the tectonic plates moving under the earth and the pleats and frills that were created at the hems of these folds were the mountain ranges that appear on the surface. After thinking of that, my thoughts jumped to the finale 'corset' looks and how Lindsay saw a butterfly in the black look. I connected that to " the butterfly affect", an unseen force. The final white could be ice glaciers and their melting as another unseen force. Thank you for this video and your analysis, it helped me discover one of the most beautiful shows i have ever seen.
What an encouraging comment. It’s so great to see you digging thru the source material and finding gems that I hadn’t even considered. Thank you, Oscar :)
The accessories remind me of Barbara Hepworth sculptures especially with the strings which signified for her the tension between her and nature. I remember Hussein Chalayan speaking a lot about "coming and going" as a constant theme in his work (when he designed a dance performance at Sadler's Wells) which I believe is in part related to themes of migration. When I see these pieces it makes me think of the tensions that occur between humans (their bodies) and their environment be it pre or post migration. I don't know if this is right but it's my take on it x
The “anticorsets” look like posture correctors/back braces/body casts which I’ve seen a few different times in his work. I’m obsessed with it. He does it in wood usually .
@@BlissFoster That thing she said about being a comment on the perception of the garment rather than the garment itself...I had to write it down for future reference. Having watched a few of your videos , it stands to reason you would marry someone intelligent as well as beautiful.
The weird accessories that you spoke about at beginning look kinda like Barbara Hepworth sculptures with the curves and lines between them. She approached her work often as an abstract response to nature and natural forces around her which seems to line up with the shows theme. I font know if this is correct but I thought it was a cool detail. :)
The denim outfit reflecting back on the wearer could have been with over-dyed raw denim? If worn with no layers underneath it and with enough dye it could be that the dye would rub off onto the wearer, similar to all of the while leather shoes and couches that jeans tend to try to get on.
Man, you got some low standards for thinking this dude needs a media empire. He didn’t even know what Chalayan looked like. 5:41 he says Chalayan himself comes on stage, but lol that’s just a technician.
@@BlissFoster considering he's working with an architecture collective, i'm guessing he likes the fabrication process behind sculptural design. Maybe he wanted to see if he could use architectural / design techniques to create a garment that is malleable to the body. Chair design is considered some what sacred amongst designers and architects. To me it looks like he took the arm rest and the front two legs and found a correlation with the body and placed them under her arms. He then wrapped string to the wooden pieces, providing a frontal support for her. Maybe there's a correlation to the iterated corset you talk about. Maybe he wanted a modified chair to support her whilst standing up. Much like a chair supports us when were sitting down.
@@BlissFoster I agree that it could be a reference to chair / furniture design! He seems to frequently reference escapism and I think Chalayan's fashion displays could be subconsciously based on his own narrative (exile/migration, as you mentioned). Showpieces such as this chair-esque one could be exploring the idea of how the human body might be assisted through design? I am always reminded of things like life jackets, hot air balloons, aeroplanes and other products which support and transport the human body, so a chair ties in with this speculation. It's interesting comparing this to the concept of unseen natural forces, perhaps through his showpieces a cycle of reliance is developed between the pieces themselves and the body (so the body is being supported and adapted by these pieces whilst it also becomes the natural force itself - breathing life and meaning into them). x
Oh nice! I need to learn more about that system. PR firms seem to have such an important place in the industry, but I have no clue how that all unfolds
The thin vertical wooden stems remind me of the antenna from the boy's remote control. maybe they are suggestive of something that is receiving signals.
You don't have to "understand" haute couture, you only have to experience it, just like art. For me haute couture is art so I don't try to understand it. I just enjoy. ;-)
Wow people went crazy in the comments to praise you. Saying you need a media empire? Really guys? Bliss, I can clearly see you’re enthusiastic and you like to read about fashion. But Oh come on! You could have found SO MANY videos online where his last name is pronounced before you make the video. Like British publication i-D has a video of difficult to pronounce fashion brands or style.com or Show Studio have videos talking about Chalayan’s collections where critics pronounce him correctly. It’s such a easy mistake to prevent and totally unprofessional to put an acknowledgement of your mispronunciation instead of reshooting a video. It’s hard to listen to a 30 minute long video where the name of subject is keep being mispronounced. Finally, DUDE have you even googled what Hussein Chalayan looks like? @5:41 that is NOT Hussein Chalayan. He was bald even back in 2000.

Love to see bliss in some ss98 fits just saying ;)
You should do a video exploration of your own wardrobe!
I have! There’s a 7 hour, 3-part video on the Patreon 💫💫
I love this!
The new intro!
the wooden sculptures under her arms are probably derivative of the warped wood similarly used in chair design.
What do you think the connection there is?

Oh nice! I need to learn more about that system. PR firms seem to have such an important place in the industry, but I have no clue how that all unfolds

The wooden accessory thing reminds me of a dilapidated fence. Could be right, could be wrong though.
Definitely, there’s a visual connection there for sure
