- I show how to build a well-ventilated critter cage or bug box with plastic jars, fiberglass window screening and a glue gun. The design was part of my series on rearing monarch caterpillars from finding milkweed and monarch eggs to eventual tagging and release. Ventilation is very important to keep insects in captivity for a brief period or rearing caterpillars. I explain step by step and show entire process from cutting out the lid of the plastic jar, opening the side and gluing fiber glass window screen into lid and side of jar. A sturdy razor knife, a hot glue gun and glue, window screening and a plastic jar is all you need. In the next episode I will show how to build a larger more sophisticated critter cage suitable for briefly housing adult butterflies as well.
Very informative. Helps so much!
Thank you ! Let me know how it goes!
🎉 love it!!!!
👍🙂
Thank you great content, how does this have barely any views? Hope your channel grows :)

Thank you for taking time to share kind words with me Charmss. Somehow I missed you comment and just caught up! Let me know how DIY cage building went for you and what you have inside! Glad it was useful for you!
@@natureatyourdoor I put 2 lady bugs i found ! But i let then out the next day :) ill find more different animals to put inside
@@madisynsierra sounds great! Those lady bugs are big predators on aphids so they would be hard to keep very long unless you can supply them with aphids! You know I always say "you never know what you might find! Today I filmed a humming bird moth and yesterday I,found catalpa caterpillars on a catalpa tree! Both will be new episodes for this week and next!
@@natureatyourdoor Woah thats cool i wanna find more creatures :) hope your having a good day
@@madisynsierra and dont forget to hang around places were there are lots of flowers! Like a singles bar...insects come to sip nectar...find mates...and then of course...thats were the PREDATORS hang out too...right? 😉
You could also just take the lid off and put mesh over top of it and then put elastic around the mesh
Yes...but not as easy access or assurance of a screw top lid!
@@natureatyourdoor true but it easier and less expensive the just mesh way
🤣🤣 I just use a drain strainer....fits right over the top
I like your idea
Thank you Kushboo Singh! Great to hear from you. I hope you try it out yourself!
Thanks for this great tutorial!
Reusing of plastic too
Yup! Ganga Bisht! Great around little DIY! Thanks for taking time to support and encourage!
I found two this evening, I don’t have a plastic container. Thought of using a large lettuce container. I don’t want to hurt them maybe I’ll leave them until tomorrow and see if they’re still on the milkweed
Aeration is key!
Let me know how it goes!
I now have a better place for them. Because I had two small plants I was afraid I would run out of milk weed. I ended up finding some along the woods near water. So I have a fresh supply. They’re quite large already! Thank you for the wealth of info you provide.
@@natureatyourdoor I released both ( males) today! Such a fascinating experience!
Thanks again for all your info.
Thank you! Where does one buy fiberglass window screen? Also, are there any other mesh materials you would recommend as an alternative?
I am trying to remember where I got mine. I think Lowes or home depot has it! Check out the window screen hardware repair aisle. I think wire screening is to stiff. Let me know how it goes!
