I'm an actual hopi and I agree for the most part but some modern hopis use feathers too, but not the Navajo do it we put the feathers were they're supposed to be. If you ask a Navajo what everything means on it they probably wouldn't know. Because everything on a kachina doll means something to us
Thanks for the education. My dad had kachinas from the Navaho. He really liked the flair they have. (cousin has them now) I always wondered about value of the pieces. Thanks again.
The Navajo often make very pretty dolls, but as they are more decorative ... and are not considered collectible in general, once you start really studying Kachina dolls, the Hopi carvings will really stand out. Note my early videos will be fairly basic and as I run out of basic topics I will get into more details. Thanks for the feedback. Matt
My Brother has Kachina Figures and will very much like this video .(I will Share) He worked with me in Window Rock and I believe his have attachments , like feathers that are NOT carved , BUT , he still loves them the same Ha!Ha! We have a American Indian Store in St.Elmo Illinois that have some Very Good pieces , the wife and I drive up there at different times and I usually buy Brother Bob a Figurine , Navajo I find out now Ha!Ha! Thanks Matt , your videos are ALWAYS a pleasure to watch !
There are many reasons to collect ... and so the less costly Navajo dolls do make a nice art item to enjoy! The more you learn though, the more you tend to gravitate towards classic examples of the form.... and if Kachina Dolls are the focus.... then Hopi is where the rich history meets the object. Matt
The one thing is that navajos don't have kachinas they are copy and appropriating another culture as they have in past like in their weaving, basket making and other things they make.
This is the history of culture itself. If the Navajo don’t claim them to be Hopi Kachinas and make it clear they’re Navajo created, what’s the problem?
Im Navajo grew up with Hopi/Tewa/Navajo relatives. My uncles from Polacca showed me how to carve katsina. My carvings are on par with Hopi carvings. There exists discrimination by non-natives who have no life experience as one in my shoes.

The fact the knock offs are sold higher price and the Hopi dolls we make are something meaning to us they are alive I am Hopi and know a lot
