    All this time I had no idea that position 1 of the major pentatonic was position 2 of the minor pentatonic scale, thanks for the clear explanation!

    FYI
    When playing the positions and learning them it helps to go up 1 position move to the next and descend in that position... probably the best tip I can give when learning box patterns as after to learn them this way yo will be connecting the patterns across multiple strings with absolutely no thought and have it be essentially instinctual.

    I've been a casual player for over 25 years but could never wrap my head around scales. This video has finally made the concept hit home. I like the table of contents time markers to bring me to the next position. What I found especially helpful in this demonstration was how you bring the scales back down finishing out with the root chord. Thanks for the video. Nice work. Subscribed.

    Note names are helpful but wouldn't it be more helpful to name scale degree names? I, II, III, V, VI, so when transposing you have a more immediate connection to the note's relationship to the key? So in the minor pentatonic it is I, 3b, 4, 5, 7b. I've only heard about this caged system in the last year. It is a cute learning aid. When I was taught originally I was taught the blues scale (minor pentatonic) and diatonic (do, re, mi...) scale. I then drew a map of the fret board up to the 12th fret. I can't remember now but I probably laid the E blues scale on the map marking each spot on each string up the neck. I probably used the C major scale for the diatonic scale. Then you can mark the three notes of the C major chord on that diatonic scale and see the caged chord shapes moving up the neck. It also helps see what the other scale degrees are and how they relate to the key. In the blues scale you can see all those little box shapes they teach but also see how they relate to each other and to the key. I don't remember it taking me that long to memorize those two patterns but at the time I was just fumbling around with my fingering so I could learn the two things together. Next you can see how the blues scale and diatonic scale are related. After that playing in any key is just a matter of shifting your pattern, keeping an awareness of the root (do) to help anchor the pattern in your mind.

    Only took me 3 minutes to realize the chart is inverted on both the X and Y axis. Cool.
    Yes, I am 100% aware that 'high' E is traditionally on top. And that we go left to right, righter => higher frets. It's just also literally the inverse of the visual aid.

    JJ, thanks for the great content! I may have had a mind-blowing (for me...) revelation, please confirm if I'm correct or delusional ;-) Here is my question: Instead of learning all 5 Maj Pentatonic scales would I be able to solo using the Minor Pentatonic in the relative minor key to the major key the song is being played in?? For instance, if a song is in A Major, could I just use the F#minor pentatonic scale and be ok?

    • @walterobrien467
      @walterobrien467 6 лет назад

      Ty yes it is

    • @danielcoleman4807
      @danielcoleman4807 2 года назад

      You are correct. Any relative minor can be found by starting on the 6th note of a major scale. Example, C majors relative minor is A minor.

    • @danielcoleman4807
      @danielcoleman4807 2 года назад

      Having said that, C major scale sounds better for the key of C and A minor scale sounds better for songs in key of A minor. They have the relationship of Major to relative minor. Use the full scale with all 7 notes or the pentatonic scale. Works for both.

    Why is position five of the C pentatonic scale around the middle of the guitar? I guess I'm just trying to understand because if one tries to follow the five position like the A major pentatonics scale you run out of strings to play in the guitar if you keep moving horizontally?

    i'm just relearning the guitar again after 30 years. lol. But maybe i'm wrong but I think the relative minor is always 3 half steps below the major key. A is 3 half steps below C. Thus A minor is the relative of C major. and E is 3 half steps below G. So, E minor is the relative of G major

    why didn't you start from open strings beginning on 3rd fret of 6th string (G), then open 5th string (A), then 2nd fret on 5th string (B) etc? That should've been position 1 I think. In general how do you label the position number as 1, 2..? Is there a standard for that? It seems that each key has different position numbering which complicates things for a beginner guitarist

    Your lesson was by no means one of the best I’ve seen. However at the very end when you started matching pentatonic scale numbers to the keys for instance the key of a I got a little confused as to what Scale Number went with the keys. Could you please clarify that sometime or another. Thank you

    its like E minor penta Scale. nice :) just position 1 in G Major is played as position 2 in Minor etc. and position 5 in Gmajor scale is played as position 1 in E minor ! yeah?

      Wazzey that's right because Em is relative minor to G major, as Am is related to C major. Google "circle of fifths"

    I think of the minor pentatonic home row (E shape) as a starting place for all the minor pentatonic shapes while soloing. Is there a "home row" with the major pentatonic?

      see my comment, I am confused by this too. I think the home row or the E shape should be the open strings with G played on the 3rd frt of 6th string, open A, B on the second fret etc..

      @@RatedA4Aliens @RatedA4Aliens Nah, that would be position 5 if you keep going up the fretboard after the 12 fret. They're the same really just an octave apart. It's the same shape/pattern except you have the nut there instead of playing the 12th fret. See position/shape 5 is starting on the low E 12-15, 12-14, 12-14,12-14, 12-15,12-15 across all the strings. If you were to think of the fretboard as a treadmill everything repeats after the 12th fret. If you do that then position 5 can be played in the open position 0-3, 0-2, 0-2, 02, 0-3, 0-3. But you always start position 1 on the first note of each scale on the low E string. That's why position 1 of G starts on fret 3, that's the G note. It's the same way for every scale. That's how you find your first position.

    Isn't a major scale root note start with finger four?
