Walker is the best defensive 1B in baseball (2 consecutive Gold Gloves), is obviously a very good hitter, plays a ton of games (157 last season and 160 the year before), is the clubhouse leader for a World Series team, and yet people still debate whether or not he's an All-Star. The All-Star Game has become a sham where the only thing valued above offense is popularity. Sadly, it's not about the best players in the game anymore. Guys like Tony Gwynn, Ozzie Smith, Wade Boggs, and George Brett would all get left out for home run hitters who played for large market teams.
Also Tony Gwynn was a 15x all-star, ozzie smith was also a 15x all-star, and George Brett was a 12x all star. Those guys were the best in those years and they deserved it. But Christian Walker has never been a top player, and hasn’t even been the best 1st basemen when there is Freddie Freeman and Bryce harper playing. The players are popular because they are actually GOOD, if that wasn’t the case then De La Cruz would be shortstop instead of Trea Turner, or Teoscar Hernandez would be left field instead of Jurickson Profar.
Both Freeman and Harper are better hitters, and Harper’s currently in the NL MVP race. Walker ends up a step below those guys because the 1B position is simply too crowded, despite being All-Star level as well. We’ve seen this kind of case before.
Watching the last HR was one of those baseball moments that just makes you laugh because of how unbelievable it was. Last time I’ve really been like that was watching JD Martínez the 2nd half of 2017. Fking unreal.
