James Burton was the guy in the white jacket playing that fantastic guitar interlude with Bruce Springsteen. Burton is a guitar legend, ranking #24 in Rolling Stone magazine's 250 greatest guitarists of all time. Among his many fans is Rolling Stone's Keith Richards. He formed the backup band TCB for Elvis Presley. You name a great singer/group and you'll find James Burton played with them at one time or another. I love how Roy stands back a bit and let's Burton & Springteen to their thing. That was a special moment.

James first played for like 8 years for Ricky Nelson in the studio, on the TV show [The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Rick's parents' sitcom], and on tour first. Along with being a studio muscian in high demand.

Roy Orbison and The Beatles toured the United Kingdom together in 1963, from May 18 to June 9. The tour included other acts. Roy was the headliner. a mere year and 4 months later he had the #1 song in the USA amid all the Beatles hits and others. The guita riff is hevaily influenced by Liverpool Bands, he knew exactly what he was doing to get a hit...sound similar to the Liverpool sound with his own stamp on it. Roy was one of the Bealtes' heroes in rock. just listen to hold Me tight by the Beatles, or I Call Your Name, and you will hear similar guitar riffs to Pretty Woman. Or the Hippy Hippy Shake by the Swinging Blue Jeans. even the Beach Bys had a song called Dance, Dance, Dance with a similar riff around the same time as Roy's Pretty Woman.

It has been said that this song was written for Roy’s first Claudette, she left to go shopping at the store, by walking down the street. It’s said by the time she returned from shopping the song was written. Pretty impressive I’d say.

There is an apocryphal story about a reporter asking Elvis what it was like to have the greatest voice in rock and roll. Reportedly, Elvis replied, "I don't know. You should ask Roy Orbison." I don't know if it is true but if it isn't, it should be. When Elvis was with Sun records, he toured with Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Louis.

And you must recall, yes, that he was also a member of The Traveling Wilburys so, indirectly, you have the musical connections to all those musicians in one way or another besides the ones on stage: George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. As you referenced, as you keep learning, the connections, influences, and tributes they give each other is awesome. They are conversing through their music and speaking a musical language to each other.

This is probably Roy Orbison's most famous song. He had lots of hits in the 60's such as "Crying", "Only The Lonely", "Running Scared", "In Dreams", "Love Hurts", "Leah" etc. In 1988, he co-founded the rock supergroup "Traveling Wilburys" with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne. I think you have done some of their songs already.

The song came long before the movie. That movie is not a favorite of mine. No young woman should ever believe Prince Charming is a possibility when working the streets. Of course, that is just my opinion.
