    as a reference, sure!
    as a pixel art/sprite, ehh that's stretching it by a large margin.
    some of the main feature of pixel art is the artistic look of palette, textures & lighting together. the shape of your pixel art is also important.
    shrinking images could only do so little. the textures are messy & cloudy. the palette is a soupy mess of "fluffy" colors. the lighting is often confusing. the shape becomes vague & too abstract.
    overall, i only recommend the use of shrinked image as references. even then, i would only shrink images by a couple percentage, not shrink into near indistinguishable blob of color. aside from that, i urge you to forget about shrinking photos used as pixel art.

      At least he could change interpolation method from cubic to nearest or something, but it wouldn't do much.

    This is more a tutorial of how to shrink images than how to make pixel art. It doesn't really utilize any of the principles traditionally used in pixel art. Especially with those aliased transparencies.

      Agree. But the base idea is good though. I think that changing the interpolation and color depth could get us closer to the end result.

    For everyone bitching that this isn't pixel art, I'd like you to do the sprite work for my indie game pro-bono. See, I can design, code, and even play music but I can't illustrate for shit, and I've been using this sort of technique for years to avoid having to demonstrate rectangles sliding around and bouncing on rectangles and shooting other rectangles with smaller rectangles. And you know what? It doesn't suck.

    This was so helpful! Thank you. I have a question I'm sure you could answer, so my plan is to then use the pixel art as a reference photo for an oil painting. So i'd love to be able to see the colour palette that I would need to mix before beginning to paint, is it possible to do that somehow? Meaning is it possible to see and count all the colours that are neccesary? since its hard to tell and compare them to each other in this kind of image. Any advice would be amazing! thanks

      @HIM-HUMAN Год назад

      Yes it is, you can draw a few rectangles on your canvas, then use the dropper tool( one that picks colour from the image) to choose colours from the image, then fill the rectangles with those colours.
