ive seen and saved videos of mcguffins foot literally crossing the line and on the floor before he serves. doesnt happen every time but it does happen. everything in his serve is borderline legal. ball above bellybutton, paddle above wrist, foot crossing the line on serve, etc. of course when its that borderline, there are gonna be some serves that are illegal, youre not gonna hit every single serve below your bellybutton when its literally so close.
Tyson's serve was called this weekend, but the call would have been a fault instead of a replay if PPA used USAPA rules (4.A.9). But they don't. They incorporate rules to assist their main contracted players. This is one of them. IMO of course.
As far as foot crossing the line, it's tough, because technically his foot lifts off the ground right before contact is made, meaning it might be legal. Definitely very close and tricky.
💯 in no other sport at the professional level do the refs look like couch potatoes. Not that they need to be athletes, but the visual is always painful
you forgot the about the countless number of Whitwell Ernes that went uncalled. I think I counted 7 or 8 on mixed day alone. And, glad to see McGuffin's serve called. Should have been called more. Paddle is constantly above the wrist.
The only sensible reason the fault might have survived the challenge is that her backswing initiated in the NVZ. 9.A. "All volleys must be initiated outside of the non-volley zone". 9.B.1. "The act of volleying the ball includes the swing, the follow-through, and the momentum from the action". At the end they announce "there was a NVZ violation", without saying foot fault. Even if the ref initially thought it a foot fault, she may have used the swing rule to prevent reversing herself.
As far as the Tyson paddle thing goes, it's not anything too crazy although he was being very vague since he does not want to hurt Selkirk marketing. He went back to the red and black 002 and changed his lead tape (tungsten tape) setup pretty dramatically. Adding a ton of weight to an older iteration of the paddle and not discussing that change was likely due to keeping competitors in the dark and his Signature Power Air (which he no longer uses) coming out the same week.
Tattoo McMullet's serves have been questionable for a very long time, and the warning didn't change his paddle orientation one bit. It's a hard violation to call in real time, even in slow motion. It's doubtful that it's legal, but it's close enough that I doubt he'll ever really get called for it. I'm curious what he did to alter his paddle; certainly created cause for speculation. He's a great singles player, and his instructional videos with explanations and training drills are arguably the best out there, for both players and coaches.
Some weird takes here (acting like the PPA has NFL money to afford booth referees 😂) - though the point Bright makes about a different ref reviewing is solid. Hopefully that changes. Needless to say…it wasn’t a big missed call bc of the situation, but could be in the future.
You missed the Riley Newman foot fault that he got away with because the refs made the same video challenge mistake. Lea and Hurricane took game 1 against AL/CP but then losing in 3. Riley Matt taking Johns Bros to 5 but then losing 11-0 11-1 in 4th and 5th.
Mcguffin called for illegal serve? Come on. His serve is the most legal serve among all pro pickleball players.......... (did you hear the sarcasm?)......
Agree! I say it every time we watch! Some high speed cameras would make a huge difference. Last tournament there was a call where the ball bounced between frames they were so slow. Not “big time” yet.
That was not a foot fault, she was not in the kitchen before she hit the ball, you can run in the kitchen the long you won't have contact with the ball
Thank you for your time and posting. IMO, AB's foot fault was correct. She never re-set her feet (9.B.1). But this may be in conflict with 9.D. And remember, PPA makes up their own rules to serve the PPA. Tyson's service replay at a sanctioned tournament would have been a fault (4.A.9). IMO, PPA makes up rules to solely conform to their top players. Almost every part of Tyson's serve is illegal, at one point, including his foot as said below. Thank you again, always great info. Added: What the refs should have done w/ AB is when they announced their ruling, explain why they came to that conclusion.

great video as always. Loved the Anna Bright coverage.
Great video as usual. PPA really needs to look into the ref situation if it wants to be taken seriously

Papa Jimmy needs to stop spending all his energy on AB, and practice more.

The ref that reviewed that should never be on a PB court again.
Let's go!

Excuses for golden boy losing and NO VIDEO ANYWHERE TO SEE IT … so so so sorry JOOLA

Better footage with a higher frame rate and better refs is needed or the PPA wont grow.

Ppa has there own rules. Hate the ppa and the mlp
Place your bets…. SMH
Alshon you just got McGuffin'd
The act of volleying includes the swing. Rule 9.B.1. The ref was correct. Her swing started when her foot was in the kitchen.
I don't think that's accurate. A violation only occurs if you contact the ball without first establishing feet outside the NV zone.

She did reestablish footing…😂 sure if she hadn’t it would have been a kitchen violation. But she clearly did.
